Go to the fafsa.com and put in your state and what year she is going. It is different for every state. This will give you deadlines.
I think my DD did hers early to see how much aid she would get before deciding on which college she wanted.
Hope this helps. Good luck!!! Exciting times ahead!
Oh, and my other piece of advice...she should avoid taking out loans as much as possible.

Of course she wants a school where it's a good fit. It's also not a good idea to be drowning in debt once you graduate. I was fortunate; I went to the school where I wanted and had tons of scholarship money, so my parents funded the rest. Sooo many of my college friends have tons of debt. I have a co-worker who is 40 and still has student loans. Every scholarship, go for it. I interviewed at my alma mater and they gave me $1000. Little stuff like that can add up.

The FAFSA is still important, though. Many schools require that students have it even to get merit-based aid.

I definitely agree about the debt. It is hard for students who take on a lot of debt to find a job that pays well enough to get them out of debt. This is especially true nowadays when schools cost over 30, 40, or 50 k a year to attend. My dd has been getting emails from one university. The tuition is 48k. That got deleted.

In my opinion there are only four professions that absolutely require one to acquire a degree. Teachers, Doctors, Lawyers and Politicians. Teachers are needed for all the basics for everyone. Doctors need medical school because it is a life and death situation that they decide to pursue. Lawyers need that legal degree to be able to sort through all the garbage generated by Politicians and Politicians apparently require a Clown School Degree.

If people would only go to schools that they can afford then two things would happen. One, tuition would go down at most Universities and Two, business would be required to hire people without degrees and train them in the positions they need. The income might be small in the beginning, but they wouldn't be saddled with that massive debt that no one can live long enough to get out of. It would be a small income for a brief period of time instead of a long, long, long debt responsibility. I had a number of completely different career paths over my life time and not a single one required a degree. I learned them all on the job and except for bragging rights, my degree was useless.

Sounds like the weather here, for the past few days. Homecoming hand egg game was stormed out (takes more than a little rain to cancel that), Homecoming dance was cold enough, DD didn't want to go for pictures where the kids congregate, so everyone can get pictures with everyone. Next day rainy. And then the heat and humidity went crazy. Today, cold and rainy. Went from close to nineties, low sixties today and rainy, so far. Fifties this weekend. I just wanted some nice autumn days to have my windows open.

I think it’s supposed to get cold and rainy next week. I’ve been enjoying the heat.
I agree with you that fall should have some nice comfortable weather.,not extremes!

I saw this meme posted several times in my FB newsfeed yesterday.

Here in coastal SC after a week of cool temps its been back up in the 90's, today it may hit a record high of 94 supposed to cool off by Sat low in the 60's and high oh 80. Supposed to get even cooler later in the week. I'm so sick of this heat, we could use some rain haven't had any since the 10+ inches we had from Dorian, tilled the garden yesterday dry as a bone.

@93boomer ...or anyone else. Since my daughter is in 12th grade, I know we are able to start the FAFSA application. Oct. 1st it opens up. Yet is there any immediate hurry? Does it have to be done before the month is over?
So I e-mailed w/ my DD's Guidance Counselor and she said it varies by College / University. I just finished an online chat with my DD's chosen University. Their Financial Aid Dept. said there is no hard deadline. I said we'd make it a goal to be done with the FAFSA and submit it by Thanksgiving. They responded that would be perfectly fine.
The End :)

I applied to one really expensive school because I wanted to see if they were offering merit based aid and it didn't take me much time because they were on the Common Application. They offered to cover about half the tuition. Still wasn't enough. My school covered 75% of my tuition.

It depends on the school she is going to. Some schools have funds on a first come first served basis.
TBH, when DH saw it was a giant waste of time for us, he stopped filling it out. DS gets a lot of merit based scholarships. The first year it wasn't filled out, we noticed a$2000 discrepancy. This part of his scholarship is specifically towards housing. DH was told because it wasn't indicated on Faisal that he would be living on campus, it wasn't included. Even though he was in a dorm, provided and issued from the college, the school finance dept had no clue. Explained he is, if you look at his record, there is the proof. $2000 in scholarship magically added on. We now play this game every year.

ETA- I see you got your answer, already.

I would just be happy to push some rain to you, if I could.

My middle son who has from the time of birth has been independent went to pharmacy school and got a degree in nuclear pharmacy ( makes isotope labeled compounds for cancer therapy and other stuff above my head). While in school he took out $100,000 dollars in loans. I kept saying Travis do you know what you are doing "don't worry pop". He got out of school and had those loans paid off in 5 yrs. My point is it not so much the loans its whether or not the degree you receive is marketable and will allow you to pay them back.

You made some very valid points in the 2nd paragraph. Tuition costs would go down eventually, and also companies would do more on-the-job training, as in the past. Hopefully, these are not dead concepts.
