Picked up an official FIFA 2014 WC ball (along with for some reason keeper gloves that I'll never use) to really get in the spirit. When I got home my dog sat, thinking the ball was for her. No fido, it isn't. I haven't played my 2006 WC computer game for this yet... there's nothing like winning the WC with sides like Tahiti, Cape Verde, and Uzbekistan...

Two questions for the masses here:

What percentage of the people in the U.S. who are following this are following not the US squad, but the team from their birth/heritage? At least half?

Swiss goal. Or not.

Is the WC the 'best' football on the planet quality wise? Or is that to be found in the Premier League or one of the other European Leagues?

French PK. No goal. Missed the rebound shot too.

I think this is the only sporting event that I actually look forward to (perhaps the olympics as well), and yet I might watch about 15 minutes of Premier League a year (and absolutely no MLS).

Conga line in the stands. To me it's part of what makes this and the olympics enjoyable. Seeing people from all over the world enjoy the success of their team/athletes (is this the 'national team sport of choice' of 29 of the 32 particpants)?

Didn't have Costa Rica knocking England out and winning the group, but i didn't think England would make it out of the group.


No the World Cup is not the best quality football on the planet, the squads aren't together long enough to play at their optimum, to have that deep understanding of what each other is going to do, and the format of the competition with a game every three or four games also doesn't help the quality aspect (also due to the qualifying criteria there are some good countries that are left out, mostly in Europe while there are some of a lower level in the competition mostly Asia and Africa [granted this is needed to allow development of the game in these regions] And equally just putting together a collection of good players doesn't neccesairly result in a good team )

The best quality football in the world is probably the Champions League, a competition between the top club teams of Europe, who tend to have the best players from all over the world in their prime. The best leagues are debatable but are generally considered to be the Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain) and the Bundesliga (Germany).

I didn't see Costa Rica even advancing to be honest. I kinda thought it was going to be Uruguay (Because of the South American home field advantange) and Italy. Little do I know only one will advance to the Round of 16! What's even more surprising is that Costa Rica have won without Alvaro Sabario, their leading goal scorer who plays for Real Salt Lake in the MLS here in the States. Looking ahead, they'll probably face the Ivory Coast and I can't see them beating Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and all that talent there. But Italy was not at their best and perhaps a fit Suarez would've made a huge difference in that first game.

Anyway, there was one more game today for those wondering with Ecuador beating Honduras 2-1. Honduras finally ended their goal drought but Enner Valencia scored twice. And France, well, as an Arsenal supporter, I loathe Samir Nasri with a passion so to see the French succeed without him makes feel a little better. (So does seeing Olivier Giroud score a goal in the World Cup!) So France has 6 pts, Swiss with 3, Ecuador with 3 and Honduras with 0 in that group. The Swiss in the better position, I think to advance with the French. (France's goal difference is +6!) Anyway, I'll be waiting for Sunday for US-Portugal! The Melee in Manaus awaits.

All i can say is Football is a crap game anyway and the world cup is pointless

Im going to watch a proper game with the rugby New Zealand vs England .........

Ok 10 minutes in and we are 12 -3 down Rugby sucks too

ps why are we no good at anything we invent

pps is there another nation that trys to compete at the top evel in so many international sports and usually fails, maybe we should just pick one and stick with it
