They should have kept that 2nd ball in play....

I know this was a while ago, but I'm thinking of that red card in the Portugal/Germany match. The German player looked like he was in serious pain, then when Pepe bumped heads w/ him he magically healed.....

Football players have miraculous powers of recovery

In fact they can recover from almost any injury with one of two easy cures

1) the decision goes their way

2) play carries on but the ball is played near them in a good attacking position

In any other situation a physio may be required

All refs in a FIFA competition were Adidas equipment, they must wear black shorts and boots and either black socks, or blacks socks with a bit of white only

As for shirts there are 5 colours; Black, yellow, red, yellow, green and blue, their licence is below the left pocket

They addtionally carry a yellow card a red card, a wahistle (normally two) pen (normally two) pad of paper, a coin (or similar to flip and determine kick off) and a watch (or two). Addtionaly they have a radio system to communicate with the other officals, this allows them to receive a signal when a linesman raises their flag, and also for the goalline technology

Ok, who here had Costa Rica eliminating jolly ol' England before they even meet on the pitch, and possibly winning the group that houses 3 past WC winners outright?

I wonder if someone is gonna ask Rooney 'what's it like to finally score a goal at the WC' now? (shades of Jerry Rice being asked 'what's it like to be the oldest player to score a touchdown' when he lost the big game in the 'other football').

Picked up an official FIFA 2014 WC ball (along with for some reason keeper gloves that I'll never use) to really get in the spirit. When I got home my dog sat, thinking the ball was for her. No fido, it isn't. I haven't played my 2006 WC computer game for this yet... there's nothing like winning the WC with sides like Tahiti, Cape Verde, and Uzbekistan...

French goal...

Another French goal...

Two questions for the masses here:

What percentage of the people in the U.S. who are following this are following not the US squad, but the team from their birth/heritage? At least half?

Swiss goal. Or not.

Is the WC the 'best' football on the planet quality wise? Or is that to be found in the Premier League or one of the other European Leagues?

French PK. No goal. Missed the rebound shot too.

It's three.

I think this is the only sporting event that I actually look forward to (perhaps the olympics as well), and yet I might watch about 15 minutes of Premier League a year (and absolutely no MLS).

Conga line in the stands. To me it's part of what makes this and the olympics enjoyable. Seeing people from all over the world enjoy the success of their team/athletes (is this the 'national team sport of choice' of 29 of the 32 particpants)?

Halftime. Time to check in to the Spirit thread...

Yeah, no way did I see Costa Rica placing where it has in their group. Unreal...

I root for Germany. Can't call it my place of birth, or even heritage, but I have my reasons. They've been my team since the first Cup I remember watching in 86.

I'd say it's fair to assume that at least half the Americans watching the cup have another team that is their primary one. That being said, pretty much every American is rooting for the US Squad as well. Sunday will be a very big game here.

Fourth. The Swiss are showing their inner Spain.. (and the keeper his inner Bill Buckner on that last goal).

Fifth.

The Swiss keeper just channelled his inner Jonathan Quick on that last series of shots.

Personally I find myself for the most part neutral, and just enjoy it. (If anything I root for the teams where this sport means something to the people at large - especially the underdogs).

Swiss, on a free kick through the wall.

Sports radio in the US (when they aren't talking the local sports teams) would rather talk about the 11 year old golfer and whether social services should get involved or not.

Another Swiss goal.

Power on the laptops gonna run out. Enjoy the rest. Tomorrow for me is yardwork day :(.
