The 60th Anniversary of Disneyland: The Reality of it All

This just keeps getting worse.

I'm not a Marvel fan myself, but my reaction to Marvel in WOC is shrugged shoulders and "Sure, why not."

They spent $4 Billion buying Marvel, it's wildly-insanely popular with golden demographics, and the only theme parks they can use it in are in California. So why wouldn't they use it wherever it makes sense in the California parks? With Innoventions suddenly closed and becoming something else, I think we're about to see a much bigger Marvel presence in Tomorrowland very soon anyway.

It makes sense financially and creatively. Marvel is just as much "Disney" now as Pixar is. Also Star Wars.

There's a meet and greet in Tomorrowland. They're gonna include THAT in the 60 year history of Disneyland?!

Oy. Friggen. Vey.

It's still an attraction, regardless. And Marvel has had a presence in Disneyland within its 60 years.

Marvel is under Disney's name, whether people like it or not, and it has a presence in Disneyland. Its presence in the show makes sense.

Yeah, I can't support a segment of a Disneyland 60th anniversary show being dedicated to a property Bob Iger bought in 2009.

Maybe if it had an attraction that actually mattered, in the park, and helped to define what Disneyland is... but this? Nah. Feels wrong. Feels cheap. Feels dirty.

It IS an attraction.

Cheap and dirty? Wow. How someone could refer to Marvel as "cheap" and "dirty" is beyond me.

If it bothers you that much, don't waste your time with the show or Disneyland in general, as Marvel's presence at the DLR is bound to grow.

It's an attraction, sure.... but are we really going to place it on the same level as classics in Tomorrowland? Space Mountain? Sub Voyage? If the Marvel Meet and Greet gets a moment on the Sun Wheel, is HISTA and EO and Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters getting that too? I wouldn't hope so...

And yeah, cheap and dirty. There's no real thematic tie to Marvel in Tomorrowland, as far as I am concerned. I'm not a fan of that studio or franchise. So I'm saying that.

And strawman argument aside about not wasting my time with Disneyland, a place I love very much, I probably won't "waste my time" with a anniversary celebration offering that I was initially very excited for. If it's going to be a franchise-fest? That excitement has waned.

Quite happy that Marvel won't be popping up in WDW, anytime soon, I should mention....

If an attraction is appropriate and awesome, honestly who cares what the IP is. I will never understand the it’s not Disney argument. That mindset would have killed the company long ago. Marvel is the biggest thing out there right now, even bigger than Frozen. They would be idiotic not to capitalize on it.

And to add showing Marvel goes to prove how far the company has come in 60 years.

Maybe it’s just me but I don’t care what source material they use as long as they make it look good in the show.. I wasn’t really into Tron, but the encore scene they created when the movie was released was phenomenal.

Marvel may not be my favorite but it could make for an awesome scene on the water.

In other news, more lights are being added around the pier for WoC-Celebrate:

What does it matter if it's "on the same level" as Space or Buzz (of all things, really?)? Marvel is still part of Disneyland and makes sense to be part of the show.

Franchise fest? The photos above are the only clues we've been given of the Marvel franchise's presence in the celebration. You're over exaggerating.

I am. And I am doing so to make a point. If we're celebrating the 60 year history of Disneyland, Marvel really doesn't have a place in it... yet.
