The 60th Anniversary of Disneyland: The Reality of it All

Probably right before the kickoff on May 22nd...at least that has been the 'guesstimate'.

I'm actually rather excited to see the scrim in person at the end of April.
Always cool to have neat, unusual photo ops like this....and seeing the 'Giant Ryman Castle' version of SBC in person will be a awesome rare treat!

Ok, thanks. I'll be there the first week of May, so that's kind of a bummer.

Hey, me too !
:)

Consider this a 'plus'...not a 'minus'.
This is a rare opportunity to see the 'Ryman' scrim in person, as this is probably the only time it will be used.
Sleeping Beauty Castle will always be there. The cool art-inspired covering will not.

I can see how one could find it disappointing though.
Hey, just a good excuse to come back and visit again soon !
;)

Hope you have a great time visiting.

It depends on what they're planning to do. They might be planning to keep the castle covered until shortly before May 22, or they may be planning to only keep the castle covered for repainting, open it a few months early then apply the decor overnight when the time comes.

Yes
The second option is much more practical, and has already been done in the past for the 50th anniversary. The castle was repainted and uncovered in time for the 2004 holiday season. Then the crowns and other decor were applied over one night.

There is no reason to keep the castle covered if it has already been refreshed and only awaiting its decorations. Too many complaints, disrupted guest flow, and I'm sure some loss in photo pass revenue as well. They wouldn't do that if they can avoid it, especially over the busy spring break period. Time will tell though.

This seems likely.

I spoke with Disneyland's Guest Relations and they told me that if all goes well, the castle should be unveiled on March 3, although it might go over a bit if complications arose. Then they said something to the effect of "other work would be done closer to the anniversary." I thought that made sense and meshed with the fact that the castle's walkthrough and gift shop are both scheduled to reopen on March 3.

That said, MiceChat lists the following on its weekly refurbishment schedule:

Sleeping Beauty Castle:
Castle will be closed for refurbishments and installation of 60th Anniversary overlay. The Enchanted Chamber gift shop and Walk-Through attraction are scheduled to reopen March 3. Castle overlay will debut May 22, 2015.

And MiceChat accurately stated World of Color's re-opening date of March 13 before Disney announced it. Although they're not claiming that the castle will be behind scrims until May... just that the overlay won't debut until then.

Hopefully I'm making some sense... I think I'm even confusing myself.

In any case, thanks for making me feel better. :) I have my own trip around then and would like to see the castle in its full glory.

People have said that it will be the original WOC with the new show debuting on the 22nd.

Well this post has inspired me to try and make a visit to the West Coast next year to check this out. Hopefully it won't rain the entire length of my trip this time.

If you are the jinx who brings the rain with them, come on out! I'll buy you dinner at Carthay Circle! We need the rain.

Nice to hear Mark Twain mention his conversation with Guest Relations about Sleeping Beauty Castle.
It will be interesting to see if there are any slight changes to the current paint scheme once the scrim comes down.

Wether it ends up being the 'Ryman Castle', or the freshly painted 'new' Castle, i will be excited to see either version come the end of April.

This was in 2010 and I felt bad complaining afterwards when I found out what a drought California is in, but omg it was just the worst thing ever. It was December and it rained or drizzled non-stop from open to close and I could not find indoor seating to eat food and get warm. Every cast member apologized but their answer was basically "yea this is weird it doesn't normally rain this much in this part of California, hope you find some indoor seating soon." However it did have the bonus of clearing the parks out since it was the week before Christmas.

I wanted so much to be jazzed to finally visit Disneyland, this was where Walt actually was, he stood here, he looked at this thing, he rode this ride. but those were not my feelings at all. I longed for WDW and it's 20 minute rain storms and the blistering warmth of its sun.

Sadly though I don't think my attempt is going to work out, my friend can't afford a trip over and I can't afford to pay for her part of it and since I don't really know the area I'm not comfortable in attempting a solo trip. I know I have plenty of time to try and find another partner to go with but I don't see it happening :(

That's what they did in 2005 for the 50th.
The castle comes out of refurb with the new paint scheme, but no 60th overlay. The decor will be added closer to the launch of the celebration.
So IS there going to be a new color scheme? Exciting.

They've added a nice, little throwback on the pardon sign...the drawing for Pan that used to appear in the guide books years and years ago:
