Trip Report That's OK- We Make Our Own Magic - COMPLETED

I've gone back and forth with myself over the last few months if I'd do a trip report at all since this wasn't the trip I envisioned, but I keep coming back to all of the photos I took and how it would be nice to share some of them. So, I guess I'm doing this. Still, I'm going to put this out there right now...there were a number of things that bothered me during our trip. Nothing was ruined or anything like that, but I am going to share both the good and the bad and it won't be sugar coated or pixie dusted. Still, it's been about 2.5 months since the trip, so some of my negativity has mellowed a bit too, so that'll help.

It's been a couple of years since I posted a trip report on here, so I'm a bit rusty with all of this. I didn't do one for our 2016 trip since it involved another Disney forum group and then we had a longer than average break from vacations because we went through a move. Yup, all that vacation money went into fun things like paint, carpet, etc.

First off...we moved out of our old house in late June, lived in a hotel (family of 4 plus a dog) for about a week and a half, and then moved into our new home in early July. About a month before the closing on our old house, my husband suggested we go to Disney for Christmas. We're not rookies and know this is not the ideal time for crowds and pricing, but it's what worked with everything else. Of course, this also meant I was dealing with 180 dining booking right as all of this moving stuff was hitting peak stress levels. Oh, and since my hubby didn't want me putting any $ into vacation stuff until we were in our new home, I didn't have the +10 luxury when booking dining. Nothing like being up at 4:45am CT for 8 days in a row as you're about a week out from a closing. We are also Houston area and live in part of town that was badly flooded by Hurricane Harvey, so there were a handful of days where I had to sit there wondering if we'd be dealing with more home things for our $ vs. vacation. We were very lucky and did not flood, but a week later, my family went through Hurricane Irma, so that was also super nerve wracking as well. Thankfully, everyone came out of that OK too, and it was pretty much smooth sailing until trip time.

So here are the details...
WHO: Me (Sandy), my husband David, my girls Samantha and Kendall...and for a portion of the trip, my brother, SIL, their kids and my parents.

38317552525_c152d9f71b_b.jpg

Yup, this is all of us just before being seated at 'Ohana.

WHEN: December 15th-24th (16th-23rd at WDW)
WHERE: The Swan...We knew we'd be between peak and holiday pricing for our trip, but after staying at POR in 2016, we decided we only want to stay Epcot area or monorail loop for future trips. I didn't feel like scaling back on our dining plans (a decision I'd regret), so I chose the Swan over a Disney resort. Even with all of the fees, the Swan's overall price per night was on par with the mods, but we got the great location, beds, and bigger rooms for the price.
WHAT: I bought 6 day single park tickets. While I do enjoy the flexibility with hoppers, I feel like we waste so much time hopping to justify the cost. So, we skipped them. We're also not DDP people, so it was OOP for us. My parents and brother are now APs, but decided TiW wasn't worth it to them after having it for a year, so we rely on passholder discounts and Disney Visa discounts for food.
HOW: Driving...it's a cost saver, but I've been asked that we fly for any future trips. I think everyone is kind of over the road trip.

So, if you've ever seen my past reports, you know I like a surprise. It's gotten to the point that the kids asked to be surprised. I knew they wouldn't be completely blindsided because I asked them for a bunch of feedback. So, this became more of a...you know it's coming, but you won't know when. At least planning things around the holidays makes it easier to have trip goodies delivered to your home without tipping them off.

I was excited for this one because I was finally going to get to do the surprise pick up at school. The kids go to different schools now, so it was a bit more challenging, but I was ready. It also helps that we celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah and with Hanukkah starting a few days before our trip, I had a few days where I could work in trip goodies into their gifts without making them suspicious. Honestly, the biggest challenge was packing. I had to take some time off from work, add things to suitcases that are in the closets in increments that wouldn't raise any eyebrows and then pull it all together in the few hours of school on the last day before Christmas break. Easy..right? Oh, and the last Hanukkah gift before the trip was Disney gift cards, and as far as the kids knew, we'd be heading to go shopping after school let out for break so they could spend them. I just never said where we'd be spending them. LOL :hilarious:

Samantha was the first to get picked up, but they were having a holiday party and I had to get the car ready. So, David went into the party while I prepped the vehicle. It looked better in my mind that it came out, but it still worked. I had light up mouse ears on the head rests, light necklaces draped around them, Disney plush, and obviously all of the luggage in the back.

39042458612_aa3b9b9ff7_k.jpg

Unfortunately, I completely screwed up the filming of the surprise reveal for Samantha. That being said, it was great! We totally got her and she was so giddy. I did get Kendall's surprise, but she's not as much fun because she claims she had it all figured out.

I did still have one surprise still up my sleeve that would totally get her- more on that a bit later.

We hit really bad traffic getting out of our town since all of the schools were letting out for the holidays, but once we were out, it was a pretty easy drive. Unfortunately, with the later start, there was no way we were going to make our goal of getting to Tallahassee. We couldn't leave any earlier because Kendall had exams, so we'd have to settle for spending the night in Pensacola. We woke up bright and early the next day and started heading towards Orlando. I absolutely hate the drive through the FL panhandle, but it is what it is. We also hit really bad traffic on I-75 due to an accident right before the FL Turnpike, but we made it to WDW by just after 3pm.

This one's a bit better...

*********************************************************

So, that's it for now. I normally speed through my TRs, but I have so much going on with work, house stuff, kid stuff, etc. that this might actually take me a while...especially once I get into the bulk of the pictures. All of this so far was done on my phone, which is just ok, but I finally got a new camera and lens. So, I took A LOT of pictures. Are they all amazing? No, but they're much better. :)

I also accidentally picked Large sizing for the photos on this first post. I promise to pick a more normal size for subsequent posts.

Coming up...More of Dec 16th- check in drama and excitement, a room with a view, parking, and dinner/fireworks plans.

So, we were heading to Test Track...

39243842472_f718c5c468_c.jpg

It was kind of crazy, but we all got to make our own cars this time. There was already a hefty standby line, so I guess this is another example of them not filling things to capacity. I can't recall if I've made mention to it or not, but this is all playing into a recent interview with Len Testa of Touring Plans concerning similar issues.

We wound up sharing our car with a mom and daughter who were in the single rider line. The mom was so funny. She kept checking with her daughter to make sure there were no drops or loops. LOL- I also didn't get much in the way of pics during the ride because I accidentally strapped my camera under my seat belt. Ooops! Yeah...so it's a lot of random lines.

David was chatting it up with the one Chevy rep about the Silverado on the floor because it had a package on it that made it look like the old Avalanche. Even the Chevy rep said that the package is insanely priced. I wound up looking at a Suburban, and somehow, I decided to give up my email so he could send me info on the Tahoe. I'm still a few years away (I pray) from any kind of vehicle purchase, but I figured it couldn't hurt to get info. Thankfully, they just sent one email and that's it. Although, you can tell these guys don't do a ton of product demos because the guy talking to me couldn't collapse the third row to show me the cargo capacity. Which is fine...just funny because I have to wonder if they've ever been asked. Ha!

Not even sure why he's looking...he liked the Avalanche look a lot, but he always goes for the F-150 from Ford.

Next up... a trip to MouseGears. The kids had gift cards to burn, but not just the ones I gave them. My brother gave them gift cards for their bdays and Hanukkah as well, so they had a lot of spending $.

After that, we headed towards Spaceship Earth for our next FP...

The FP line was all the way up the one side and twisted around several times, so David started flipping out about how long we'd be in line. I had to remind him again that it would move much faster than standby. He reluctantly got into the line...which took us all of maybe 10 minutes to get to the front. We also admired someone's Banshee while in line...the girl's dad jokingly scolded K and S for leaving theirs unattended in the room. LOL

December 19th Continued-

So, we'd just gotten off of Spaceship Earth and decided to head into the Art of Disney. David and I had been talking about buying some Disney art for the new home and I'd considered getting something in place of my traditional new Dooney. Still, it had to be the right piece.

24410104017_4119a54145_c.jpg

As much as I love IASW, it didn't have the Mary Blair vibe I'd want. I mean, it has some, but it doesn't scream it.

I do love the Cheshire Cat and I loved that this piece was an original, but I didn't love it enough to drop $2k.

24410102277_495eef4160_c.jpg

David and Sam thought about this one, but again...not enough love to buy.

OK, I'm not a huge BatB fan to begin with, but I really don't like the new Mrs. Potts. I love Lenox, but I am so not in love with this. I think she's kind of creepy. I understand that I'm in the minority. LOL

If you read my 2014 TR, you might remember that I rode orange for the first time and while I never got sick, my stomach and head weren't right for the rest of the day. When we went summer of 2016, the kids rode for the first time. They went green once just to be with mom, but they rode orange after that with David and decided they want nothing to do with green. Even my parents prefer orange. Still, I know what it does to me, so David went off with the girls into the orange line, and I rode green all on my own. So, I clearly chose...NOT to puke!

The green line was moving much more slowly than the orange. David and the girls were long gone and I was still waiting. I'm not sure if it's because of the new mission or if I hit at a time when lots of anti-orange people were riding. Still, it wasn't an awful wait either and before long, I was prepping for my mission.

38566140084_167109f584_c.jpg

I know some people miss Gary, but David watches Suits, so I like the change.

I actually wound up with another woman who was riding green alone while the rest of her family went on orange. The only difference, this was her first time ever riding anything for Mission Space. So, she was a bit on the nervous side. She did fine and all was good once things started up. Personally, I like the new Earth simulation vs. Mars.

David and the girls were waiting and bored by the time I came out...so I was pretty much rushed from this point into the gift shop.

And we moved on to Norway. The kids and I had a great time watching Julenissen, while David got the bad news that Norway no longer serves Carlsberg. Yes, we know it's not a Norwegian beer, but they used to sell it.

David and the kids aren't big on stopping for things like this, so I'll take what I can get.

I took a few more pics in Norway...

We met Anna and Elsa in 2016, mainly because there was no wait. The girls were never huge Frozen fans, so they didn't ask to go see them again...so we just walked around. I planned on doing FEA at rope drop during EMH a couple of days later, so no need to try for that either.

David had met up with us, but was still debating about beer options, so we just stood around and I took pics. We also heard and saw a little bit of the holiday festivities in Mexico (from afar) while we waited.

I decided to try a Cantaloopy from China. It was pretty good, but the whole thing was a bizarre experience. The guy before me grabbed his drink but left his credit card. The CMs were giggling like crazy over this. Thankfully, he noticed and came back (because I certainly couldn't spot him in the crowd).

I've noticed that I really focus in on the holiday stuff when we travel to the Disney parks at the holidays. I know a lot of people do, but for us, it's more because we don't do as much at home if we're traveling around the holidays. It's hard getting motivated to deck your own halls when you're going to be gone for a chunk of the peak of the holiday season. Not to mention it's not the greatest idea to go with a big outdoor display when you're away. Being that it was our first holiday season in the new house, I couldn't stand not doing some lights (although the neighbors must think I'm crazy since my Halloween display was much bigger than my Christmas lights). I kept the display at home small, which didn't do much for my holiday spirit. So, lots of focus on this stuff at Disney for me.

***************************************************************

That's it for now. Coming up...a bottle in the trains, exploring Morocco, festive dinner with the fam, and our first time experiencing Candlelight Processional. Thanks for following along!

Wow! We were in there at the same time! Too bad we didn't have better meals :(
Wow. This doesn’t bode well for me possibly. I made an early dinner ADR for our trip in May. Hadn’t eaten in there for over a decade. Haven’t been to HS in about 2 years also, so thought of that as an excuse to go into HS.

You never know...you may have a better experience and it is a cool setting. I still would pick it over 50s for a fun meal in HS.

I have to agree with you. I do not care for the live action movie version of Mrs. Potts. She creeps me out, too!

Makes me feel better! I remember seeing people in my Disney FB groups gush over the tea set when it came out and I just didn't get it.

In going through my pics, I also noticed what appears to be a kid climbing the fence. I blurred out the minors' faces, but this isn't a young kid, the adults around him aren't reacting like he dropped something vital into the display, so it really just looks like he's testing the limits. Maybe I'm overreacting.

The CMs working on the trains finished up while we were there, but it kind of bugged me that they didn't bother to take the water bottle that had been tossed into the display. I guess it's possible they didn't see it, but they walked right by it. I mean, I'm sure trash cleanup doesn't seem to be a part of their job, but if there's a bottle in the display, it might be nice to clean it up. I hate playing the Walt card, but I would think the protocol would be to pick up the trash. Or maybe my expectations have become too high?

I was also trying to convince David to eat at Marrakesh later on in our trip. I'll get into more of that later, but he's still sour about what he considered a lackluster meal at Spice Road Table back in 2016. I was happy...I had a big bowl of brie while we were there, but he was not impressed, so we were still up in the air. It's funny, because he loves Tangierine for QS, but I guess with TS costs...he's not as good with taking the risk.

My parents were already texting me...I guess they beat us there. We really weren't far behind, plus my brother wasn't there yet. I did at least check into the podium right at 4. I knew they wouldn't seat us since we were waiting on people, but I want to make sure we weren't listed as no shows. I know Disney is usually pretty good about people being late, but I've also read enough issues that I just didn't want a problem.

My parents took the kids here back in 2016 (when we went to Spice Road Table- had a kid free evening YAY US!), so they'd had a more recent experience. They all really enjoyed it, but I've heard so many mixed reviews that I was concerned. Still, it would be a good spot for a large party and we knew the kids liked it, so we were ahead of the game already. Speaking of large parties, while I don't mind sitting with strangers, we had enough people to have a table all to ourselves. There was a table in front of us that was not pleased about sitting with people they didn't know.

Oh well, we loved our server...and it's one of the reasons I like dining in the WS. She really helped make this a special experience with her stories and warm nature.

The other big draw was the music. They did a number of things which I understand are part of the traditional show, but they also did Silent Night, which was the highlight of the entertainment for me. They had one gentleman sing the first verse in German and then everyone in the restaurant joined in for a verse in English.

(Stille Nacht)

David really didn't enjoy it, but he's also not a huge fan of German food. I liked some of it, but some things were definitely better than others. The sauerbraten was really dry, same for the spaetzle, and the biggest sin...quite a few of the potatoes in the German potato salad weren't cooked. It's sad because the flavors were pretty spot on and it reminded me a lot of my grandmother's German potato salad. I did like a lot of the sausages as well, but the quality seemed to be below the ones we get at some of our local German and Austrian places. The desserts weren't bad either IMO, but David was not happy with his Black Forest Cake...especially the cherry.

25406079538_bc1606ec34_c.jpg

While I'm not fluent, I took 4.5 years of German when growing up and it's my favorite language for singing. So, I told him in German, it was called Schwarzwaelder Kirschtorte and the "kirsch" is what lets you know it involves something with cherry. Yeah...I just came off as a condescending jerk. Yay me! LOL

He just had to sit with K!

38565948064_2ba0c408c5_c.jpg

My brother and his family would not be joining us for Candlelight Processional and were allowed to just pay regular dinner prices for the meal. So, that was also nice. There's no way his kids could sit through that, nor would they do it without disrupting others and the show. So, I'm really glad it worked out this way.

We also popped into the bathroom before heading out. It was around this point I started to feel some blisters on my heels, but I decided to wait until we were in the line for CP to check it out...so we all (well, the 6 of us) made our way over there.

38565946934_3c42a19973_c.jpg

RUSHING!!!

I was prepared for a line, but I really wasn't sure what to expect. We haven't been in December since 2010 and we opted to skip CP since the kids were too young back then. Still, I warned everyone in our group that there would be a standby line and a line for those with passes from the dining package and it could be long. So, we got there and there was a massive line for people with passes that had formed in front of Japan. It appeared so long that my dad started audibly worrying if we'd even get in. I assured him we'd be fine, but that didn't help much. When we found the start to the line, we also found out we were doing it all wrong. We had no idea our passes were stickers and that we had to be wearing them to enter the line. So, we wasted some more time peeling off the stickers and putting them on.

Once we got into the line, we knew we'd have some time before we went in, so we all decided to sit down. It was at this point that I discovered my heels looked pretty bad...and it was all because I was in a rush that morning and put on the wrong socks. Thankfully, I had my cushy flip flops with me, so I switched into those. They would become a blessing and a curse, but for now....things were good. The woman in front of us also wanted to get chatty and asked how long we'd had a package meal book...she'd heard tonight was in high demand...and she just happened to get it that day by walking up. Ummm...OK. She felt pretty good about this after hearing my story.

Not that I had to do anything overly crazy to get this meal, but I had been waiting on CP packages since 180. They wouldn't open up until we were staying in a hotel in between our house closings. I couldn't tip the kids off, so I was trying to do all of this in cramped quarters. I got an alert around 7am that it had opened up...everyone was still asleep in our little hotel suite...and we had an extra air mattress in there that required me to hurdle all kinds of obstacles in stealth. Still, I was pretty excited to have it booked and even more excited because of the narrator for our date...Neil Patrick Harris!!! I knew Kendall would be so excited because for some reason, she really likes him...probably starting from his parts in the World of Color show we saw at DCA in 2015.

We also turned around and realized we were in a pretty good spot in line. I'd been told that the line can reach well into Morocco and while I didn't take a pic of it, it certainly looks like that's where the line ended.

I was also wondering how far back we'd be in the theater. We saw a lot of people who went in not too far ahead of us winding up pretty far back, but just as we were coming in, they started filling the next section and we were in the second row, just behind the section for friends and family.

38565942494_ee2f4296fc_c.jpg

It was time to switch out lenses and test how close I could get with my zoom. Yup...pretty close. Now hopefully I could stop shaking so much by showtime so I could get better shots!
