Trip Report That's OK- We Make Our Own Magic - COMPLETED

I've gone back and forth with myself over the last few months if I'd do a trip report at all since this wasn't the trip I envisioned, but I keep coming back to all of the photos I took and how it would be nice to share some of them. So, I guess I'm doing this. Still, I'm going to put this out there right now...there were a number of things that bothered me during our trip. Nothing was ruined or anything like that, but I am going to share both the good and the bad and it won't be sugar coated or pixie dusted. Still, it's been about 2.5 months since the trip, so some of my negativity has mellowed a bit too, so that'll help.

It's been a couple of years since I posted a trip report on here, so I'm a bit rusty with all of this. I didn't do one for our 2016 trip since it involved another Disney forum group and then we had a longer than average break from vacations because we went through a move. Yup, all that vacation money went into fun things like paint, carpet, etc.

First off...we moved out of our old house in late June, lived in a hotel (family of 4 plus a dog) for about a week and a half, and then moved into our new home in early July. About a month before the closing on our old house, my husband suggested we go to Disney for Christmas. We're not rookies and know this is not the ideal time for crowds and pricing, but it's what worked with everything else. Of course, this also meant I was dealing with 180 dining booking right as all of this moving stuff was hitting peak stress levels. Oh, and since my hubby didn't want me putting any $ into vacation stuff until we were in our new home, I didn't have the +10 luxury when booking dining. Nothing like being up at 4:45am CT for 8 days in a row as you're about a week out from a closing. We are also Houston area and live in part of town that was badly flooded by Hurricane Harvey, so there were a handful of days where I had to sit there wondering if we'd be dealing with more home things for our $ vs. vacation. We were very lucky and did not flood, but a week later, my family went through Hurricane Irma, so that was also super nerve wracking as well. Thankfully, everyone came out of that OK too, and it was pretty much smooth sailing until trip time.

So here are the details...
WHO: Me (Sandy), my husband David, my girls Samantha and Kendall...and for a portion of the trip, my brother, SIL, their kids and my parents.

38317552525_c152d9f71b_b.jpg

Yup, this is all of us just before being seated at 'Ohana.

WHEN: December 15th-24th (16th-23rd at WDW)
WHERE: The Swan...We knew we'd be between peak and holiday pricing for our trip, but after staying at POR in 2016, we decided we only want to stay Epcot area or monorail loop for future trips. I didn't feel like scaling back on our dining plans (a decision I'd regret), so I chose the Swan over a Disney resort. Even with all of the fees, the Swan's overall price per night was on par with the mods, but we got the great location, beds, and bigger rooms for the price.
WHAT: I bought 6 day single park tickets. While I do enjoy the flexibility with hoppers, I feel like we waste so much time hopping to justify the cost. So, we skipped them. We're also not DDP people, so it was OOP for us. My parents and brother are now APs, but decided TiW wasn't worth it to them after having it for a year, so we rely on passholder discounts and Disney Visa discounts for food.
HOW: Driving...it's a cost saver, but I've been asked that we fly for any future trips. I think everyone is kind of over the road trip.

So, if you've ever seen my past reports, you know I like a surprise. It's gotten to the point that the kids asked to be surprised. I knew they wouldn't be completely blindsided because I asked them for a bunch of feedback. So, this became more of a...you know it's coming, but you won't know when. At least planning things around the holidays makes it easier to have trip goodies delivered to your home without tipping them off.

I was excited for this one because I was finally going to get to do the surprise pick up at school. The kids go to different schools now, so it was a bit more challenging, but I was ready. It also helps that we celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah and with Hanukkah starting a few days before our trip, I had a few days where I could work in trip goodies into their gifts without making them suspicious. Honestly, the biggest challenge was packing. I had to take some time off from work, add things to suitcases that are in the closets in increments that wouldn't raise any eyebrows and then pull it all together in the few hours of school on the last day before Christmas break. Easy..right? Oh, and the last Hanukkah gift before the trip was Disney gift cards, and as far as the kids knew, we'd be heading to go shopping after school let out for break so they could spend them. I just never said where we'd be spending them. LOL :hilarious:

Samantha was the first to get picked up, but they were having a holiday party and I had to get the car ready. So, David went into the party while I prepped the vehicle. It looked better in my mind that it came out, but it still worked. I had light up mouse ears on the head rests, light necklaces draped around them, Disney plush, and obviously all of the luggage in the back.

39042458612_aa3b9b9ff7_k.jpg

Unfortunately, I completely screwed up the filming of the surprise reveal for Samantha. That being said, it was great! We totally got her and she was so giddy. I did get Kendall's surprise, but she's not as much fun because she claims she had it all figured out.

I did still have one surprise still up my sleeve that would totally get her- more on that a bit later.

We hit really bad traffic getting out of our town since all of the schools were letting out for the holidays, but once we were out, it was a pretty easy drive. Unfortunately, with the later start, there was no way we were going to make our goal of getting to Tallahassee. We couldn't leave any earlier because Kendall had exams, so we'd have to settle for spending the night in Pensacola. We woke up bright and early the next day and started heading towards Orlando. I absolutely hate the drive through the FL panhandle, but it is what it is. We also hit really bad traffic on I-75 due to an accident right before the FL Turnpike, but we made it to WDW by just after 3pm.

This one's a bit better...

*********************************************************

So, that's it for now. I normally speed through my TRs, but I have so much going on with work, house stuff, kid stuff, etc. that this might actually take me a while...especially once I get into the bulk of the pictures. All of this so far was done on my phone, which is just ok, but I finally got a new camera and lens. So, I took A LOT of pictures. Are they all amazing? No, but they're much better. :)

I also accidentally picked Large sizing for the photos on this first post. I promise to pick a more normal size for subsequent posts.

Coming up...More of Dec 16th- check in drama and excitement, a room with a view, parking, and dinner/fireworks plans.

I'm up sort of early on a Sunday and the only other one that's up (if you don't count the dog), is Sam, and she's waaaaaay off on the other end of the house watching her favorite YouTuber (I still don't get this). I'm still insanely full from dinner last night, but I somehow managed to roll myself out of bed. I would like to share something from our dinner last night that I would love to see at Disney (really...at a lot of restaurants!).

So, we went out for Cajun at a place we've never tried before (new area to us, lots of new places to try). We had done our homework before going and went in with a decent idea of what we might order, and then they hit us with this...

26125864037_da1eb87960_c.jpg

Sorry...didn't think to take a pic until we'd destroyed the thing, but this place brings out a complimentary sampler of their popular menu items so you can use it to make an informed ordering decision. It's like getting ice cream samples at Baskin Robbins, but with Cajun faves! Imagine how much confidence you'd have in your ordering choices if you had something like this before committing to your food for the evening! Obviously, it doesn't cover the entire menu, so there's still some risk in ordering, but it helped me answer the question, "Do I want bisque or etouffee?" I'm sure this is not a unique concept, but this was our first time seeing it.

OK, on with the report, since I suspect Monday - Wednesday are going to be brutal.

December 18th Continued...

In my last post, we'd just finished up on the Safari. After that, we went through Gorilla Falls.

Before I get back into December 18th and shopping, I wanted to share something I've been doing with some of my trip pictures...since I've been asked a few times why I take so many of everything. Well, for a while, the answer was simply just to capture all of the details involved with the memories, but I started doing something else. While I've printed and framed some pictures as is, I started turning them into more artsy pieces. It's fun stuff to have on display at home, but for our 2016 trip, I also used it for fundraising purposes.

While it was for a competing forum, our 2016 trip also involved a big fundraiser for Give Kids the World. If you're not familiar with GKTW, you can check out their website... http://www.gktw.org/ Long story short, I entered some of my artsy Disney photography into the silent auction that was part of the event. No, they didn't bring in thousands, but they still went for decent amounts that all went to GKTW.

Ultimately, it was amazing to be on vacation and also be helping donate to such an amazing organization that truly helps dreams come true. I won't go nuts sharing everything I've done, and I'll tell you right now that I haven't done anything yet with the pics from this last trip, but hopefully you enjoy...

Well, you get the idea. I do some other styles and this isn't the best random sampling, but these are some favorites. So, this is my new inspiration and reason for taking so many pictures. Are they priceless works...no. But, they are mine, they are original, and it's a neat way to get some unique Disney art in my home without dropping thousands (you'll see what I mean a little further on). So, on with the trip report!!!

Still, we were a bit bored. I took pics of the kids that they didn't want me to take..including showcasing K's new band colors for her braces (I'll spare you the close up). She had her bottom ones added just before the trip, so she was still a bit sore.

38393094065_8f08a86bff_c.jpg

Oh...and our festive Magic Band skins.

38393092685_b27d16a2ed_c.jpg

I did this for our 2016 trip and found it was a much better way to getting fun bands. I know we really didn't need bands for the Swan, but it's so much easier with tickets and FPs.

Oh, and yes, we weren't really hungry after our lunch at Tiffins, but this Tusker House dinner was our first big family get together for the trip. I've learned not to try and spend all of our time together. We all have different things we want to see and do, we all are good at different times, etc. My niece and nephew are also much younger and have special needs, so while I wanted to work in some time with them beyond dining, I also didn't want my kids to miss out on the thrill rides. But we don't get to see each other very often and this trip was the first time we'd be meeting my niece, so getting together for a sit down meal was more important than the logic of having two big TS meals so close together. Obviously, we could have skipped Tiffins and just gone standby for ROL if we decided to see it, but I wanted to eat at Tiffins and I wanted to use it as a safety net to ensure we got some good food that day.

I know people LOVE Tusker, but our last experience was a bad one. In fact, it was the trifecta of bad...bad food, bad service, and lackluster character interaction. You should hopefully see that we're not picky eaters in terms of trying new things, so it was just that fear over bad buffet food and an overall bad experience that was driving my concern. Still, I was hoping I wouldn't regret giving it a second chance.

As we approached our ADR time, I started looking for everyone and texting for whereabouts. By about 4:10 I had all 10 of us!

38393089755_5f5b2e2ac1_c.jpg

I left everyone in the waiting section so I could check in. Here's where it gets tricky. I could never get a party of 10. I had a party of 8 for 4:20 and a party of 2 for 4:15. I wasn't sure if they were going to be able to do it, but I was hoping they could seat us all together if we were willing to wait a bit. Plan B was that my parents would take turns at the 2-top sitting with each of the older grand kids. While I would have understood completely if they said no, I was very thankful that they were more than willing to put us together and didn't think it would take too long either. While I was a bit nervous about FoP FP timing, I really didn't mind the wait either since a. we weren't hungry b. it was a great time for all of the family to hang out and the kids to play.

I love that sampler idea, if places did that i would be so much more adventurous with food.

Yeah, it's like a food safety net! It's also made us see that there's not too much risk in trying some of the other things that initially looked good, since we now know they are good.

Love the report and all the photos.

Thanks!!! I definitely had a lot of fun with the camera this time :)

I’m really enjoying your report! GREAT safari pictures! I especially liked the rhino and lioness ones. And I like your “artsy” monorail picture 😊

Thank you :) Thankfully, my husband reminded me to take out my zoom. I'm also really fond of that monorail pic. Not all of my friends see it, but it has a softer look than the other pics. Thanks again!

I wasn't expecting to have any time to post today, but I got a call from the nurse at Sam's school that she wasn't feeling well. No fever or anything like that, but she wasn't 100% after her softball game last night and was a little lethargic this morning. I have a feeling it's her allergies (I can measure to oak pollen in inches), but I came home early to get her.

Sam can't be left out...

38392941875_b7b983e398.jpg

Unlike our last visit to Tusker, we had a great server and really great character interaction. Our server was so funny and he was having a great time talking cruises with my parents (they cruise A LOT...retirement is nice!). Unfortunately, the food was just bad. It reminded me of Chef Mickey's dinner mixed with Hollywood & Vine (or Vile if you want to quote Figment or Slime if you want to quote Pete Werner from the DIS). A girl, maybe about 12, informed me that the mac & cheese was good...and she was right...it was really good...and it was the only thing I found that was really good. I did take a pic of my desserts, but the majority of these were also meh at best. The only really good thing on that plate was the cookie bar on the left.

38392939315_2fd14f1771.jpg

Was it a fun experience? Yes. Did we have good service? Yes. Did the characters deliver? Yes. Were they super awesome in seating us all together without any major fuss when they didn't have to? Absolutely! Was it nice to be together with family? Definitely. But I can't ignore the food. I know many people come out of this with glowing reviews, including the DIS team (I know I know- different forum), but David and I thought this was just awful. My parents also would later agree. David asked that this be moved to the list of places we never eat again...and I can't blame him. We all felt ripped off. If you like Tusker...that's fine. I'm not saying anyone shouldn't (I've had some people in FB groups act like I'm wounding one of their children when I slam it), but I'm just saying it was awful to us. Food preferences are so subjective and these places are so inconsistent that it's easy to see why reviews vary. Plus, look at it this way, we're 4-10 people (depending on the trip) that won't be in competition with you for ADRs. See, silver lining!

We were also getting to the tail end of our FoP FP window, so we had to bolt. We promised everyone we'd try and meet them after if there was time. Thankfully, the walkway closer to Tusker was now open.

38392938485_d2127952a0.jpg

When we got to the FP line, there were a lot of people just standing there. We waited for a minute or two but nobody was scanning their bands or going through and there was no line from that point. I called out to ask "are you guys waiting?" but nobody said anything. David got fed up and went around. I don't like line cutting, but I also don't like people holding up the line and we were in this fuzzy gray area. I think the people to our left who were also just standing there felt like we were cutting them because they had some sour looks, but if it's your FP window and there's no line...don't just stand there and don't block the way if you're not going in. And if they really felt slighted, I would have gladly let them in front of me. Oh well, we were now in the line...

I was really running out of things to photograph. LOL

I knew our window would be tight for seeing our family and making our way to ROL, so I did some research on wait time in the FP line. Most people had been telling me 5-15 min. Yeah...we waited in the 35-45 range. I know this is nothing compared to the standby time, but it's still a longer wait as far as FPs go. The waiting area is also kind of dull, so my picture options were pretty limited.

Obviously, we eventually made it in...

24407270797_2674266f33.jpg

The kids got off and were going on about how it was so worth the wait...to the point that i think the people we passed must have assumed we waited for hours. LOL David really liked it. He was next to me and I could hear all of his reactions. His only beef is that he wears glasses and the 3D glasses for the attraction didn't work as well on the edges with those. For me, like I said before, I don't see 3D very well, so this was not as amazing for me. It was still cool, but I'm thankful we didn't have to go to great lengths while at WDW to ride it because I would have been a bit disappointed.

Because we rode FoP at the end of our window due to dining timing and the amount of the time we spent waiting in the FP line, running to ROL wasn't going to happen. I think we got out with 5 minutes to spare and that just didn't sound fun. I had flashbacks to doing the F! package at Mama Melrose and having to sprint with a stroller across the park. It really wasn't fun and the rushing and panic kind of killed the experience. I didn't want to that again, so, we skipped it. There was a later showing option, but David didn't want to stick around for that...and I was actually good with this. I know we paid for the pkg meal, but it was such an excellent meal that I don't regret doing it. So, we decided to meet up with the family since my parents were also getting ready to ride FoP. My niece was very happy to see us again...

24407267627_5ff644dffd.jpg

(pretty sure we're playing some version of peek a boo)

My brother offered to have us go through with them if we wanted to ride again since their kids qualify for the DAS pass and they'd have room for us in their group since my parents bowed out (since they just got to ride) and my SIL wanted to sit this one out, plus they thought my nephew might like to ride with Kendall, but he decided he was tired and was content to watch the girls adopt Banshees.

24407261827_9250dc9b55.jpg

It was a fun experience and the kids didn't pick the ones I thought they would. I really thought Sam would go for the bright red one and K would opt for pink, but you'll later see that they didn't go that route. I made them wait to unbox them, so no Banshee introductions just yet.

We decided to head out and explore Pandora at night. My nephew was still wide awake, but my niece was already out.

So, I did!

We captured a few pics on the way out. We didn't stop to see the tree since David didn't want to and I guess I did get to see it in 2016 (I'll attach that vid below)...

*I don't even know if any of this is still the same since I was rushed out. Also not the greatest vid since it was on my phone.

My brother's family was stuck taking the bus since my vehicle only seats 7 and I have no car seats, but my parents were looking to avoid the bus, so I drove them back to the Swan. My brother said the wait was about 20 min this time for a bus, so not too bad. And as I expected, I was able to pull straight out of my parking spot into the exit lane. For whatever reason, David always dreads leaving the parks, but whenever we drive, it's never bad.

It was still pretty early when we got back to the Swan...

39240846052_e35dfa3d85.jpg

...so, we decided we'd meet up in a bit at Phins over in the Dolphin, but we opted to head upstairs for a bit to freshen up and make sure our room had been cleaned. Looks clean to me! Also love that they made up the bed similar to what Mousekeeping does.

39240844872_a7e44be5e5.jpg

Oh...and I had spent much of the day worrying that I might have left the safe open. I had thought about running back to the room to check, but it would have messed up our day, and if it's anything like me at home...I probably closed it. I can't tell you how many times I've driven home to double check I locked the front door.

We also had a quick Banshee unboxing.

And apparently, Banshee's are allowed in the bar.

38562293284_4128943ac8.jpg

I also had to use the restroom while we were there. The halls in that area were kind of a maze to me and I felt like I was stuck in the Shining! Thankfully, I didn't see any creepy twins!

We had an early start the next day and we'd probably regret it if we kept drinking, so we decided it was time to call it a night.

*Note- I also realized everything I posted today was smaller scale than I'd been posting. If I get the energy, I might go back and fix it, but I'll probably just leave it as is. None of these were fave pics anyway.

Coming Up - December 19th- Epcot Day

Joy!!! We've come to our first of two Epcot days for this trip.

I always had Cape May in our plans for breakfast on this day. While I wish it had more than three characters, we had decent food on our last visit. It also works really well for an Epcot day when you're staying in a resort in this area. I was initially afraid it would be too early since evening EMH was originally scheduled for this day. Obviously, this was the other EMH we had shifted to another park. Boo!!! In light of this, a 7:35am ADR wasn't as big of a deal. We originally invited my brother, but this is too early for his kids, so it would be the four of us plus my parents.

So, we got an early start and made our way over to BC.

What struck me as odd was the couple in front of us suddenly made this mad dash for the side door...like they had to check in before us. Ummm, OK. Hopefully, it was some other reason, but if that was it... a party of 6 checking in isn't really going to impact a party of 2. I don't know, maybe they were in a hurry? I waited my turn, got my buzzer, and went to check out the gingerbread.

I even took food pics from the buffet at this meal! I think it has something to do with the Mickey waffles.

The food was still really good, but I was missing my two favorite things from last time. The eggs with chorizo and the asparagus with hollandaise were my old faves, and they were gone. Booooo!!!

You'll also see that Sam has this crazy fascination with coffee. For this meal, our server put soda in a coffee mug, but it looked enough like coffee that Goofy felt a scolding was needed.

He was a great Goofy too. He kept greeting all of the "people" at the empty table next to us. It was like character M&G mime.

Next up was Donald, and if you can't tell, Kendall is giddy. Sure, she wasn't wearing her leggings today, but I was in mine (as well as my Donald tee and backpack), so I more than made up for it.

39272385941_5b57328f6c_c.jpg

The Donald meeting was pretty generic, but Minnie made up for it. She was so sassy! We complimented her shoes and she put a leg up on the chair so I could take a close up. It also was a lot of leg from some angles. LOL

OK...2 out of 3 are finally looking at me. It's like they forget I'm taking pics when grandpa is there. I have the bigger camera...it's kind of hard to miss! LOL

39243405452_81641253a3_c.jpg

Speaking of my dad taking pics... this was the angle I got of Minnie showing off her shoes...

39243403832_13d40d3137_c.jpg

I'll spare you the pic from my dad's side, but let's just say Minnie has great legs, but probably should remember she's in a skirt. No complaints. She was a great Minnie...I just know so many costumed CMs have to deal with not so kind guests, so just looking out for her.

Goofy then came back for another round and was silly as ever.

Hi Patrick!
25405300498_6cb5535933_c.jpg

We went through the preshow and it was time to board. Kendall was ticked off that she's in middle school and she still doesn't "measure up" and needs the belt through the safety loop. She's just so tiny for her age.

The ride, unfortunately, was less than spectacular. I had heard stories about the distortion from the sides, but had no idea how bad it was. We rode dead center when we were on the updated ride in 2016 and it was fine. In fact, it was so good, I had no idea what people were griping about. This time, we were on the far side of C and everything was horribly bent from the distortion. Sorry, but this is a fail. The Eiffel Tower bent in half kind of ruins it for me.

So, we head out and decide to ride Living with the Land. I had thought about doing Behind the Seeds this trip, but nobody else was feeling it. So, we just got in line...

I think this is also probably the first time I really felt like we were at WDW. So much of it is scent triggered for me, so the water (while not as "fragrant" as other water rides) was really doing the trick.

We decided to head towards Imagination. Not fans of this current incarnation, but still like seeing Figment.

We had a little issue before going in. As I noted, David grabbed a soda from Sunshine Seasons before leaving The Land. The CM would not let us in for Imagination until he was done and trashed it. I can never remember where we can and can't take drinks, so this hadn't occurred to me, but here's where I have my issue. A bunch of other guests were going in with drinks. We even pointed it out to the CM. It was like...why is he OK going in with that and we can't? Some were bottle drinks and some were fountain drinks like David's, so it wasn't like he was only allowing in things that could be capped. We asked the CM why he didn't stop the others as well? The CM refused to respond to the inquiries and just said we had to wait until we finished our drink. We counted 8 more people who went in with open drinks right in front of him while we waited. What the heck? I don't mind if it's the rule, but don't single us out to enforce it and then let everyone else with drinks go in. Just absolutely obnoxious in my opinion.

I remember taking this pic as we waited and thinking...this must be anger photography!

*Still love the rainbow effect with these lights.
