Hmmm.
How about this:
I sher do like it heer in tha south.
Wish ya could all come and live heer.
But if you thank that ol yankee infested Orlando is like tha rest of tha south then you got anuther thang comin!

Sorry to be so confusing.
Anybody else in the mood for country bear jamboree?
No, thank you.

Also, when you graduate and move to Orlando as an adult, if you drive away from the tourist areas, you will find grocery stores that don't cater to tourists. You will find that you can, indeed, "escape" the tourists. And you may even find that people in Orlando are much like people all over the rest of the world. (Except for PhotoDave, but don't tell him I said that. It'll be our little secret, okay? Thanks.)

Well, I lived there as a 26 year old adult graduate student. I also suggested that the OP live away from Disney. That was an attempt to save him from feeling like he was always surrounded by tourist. You're right about the "local" grocery stores. But seriously, I went to 3 Publix at Thanksgiving and none of them even stocked turkey. At thanksgiving! Turkey! But they all had beach towels and sun block.
I guess that's not a bad problem to have. It is Florida after all.

The fact areas of the state no longer resemble "The South" isn't something that should be celebrated. Culture is a good thing.

As my Great Grandmother Nellie Belle used to say "Southern Gentlemen. Southern Belle. Southern Hospitality. There's a reason you've never heard northern in front of any of those words".
I couldn't disagree more. The fact that areas like Tampa are cosmopolitan and diverse enough to not be mired in antiquated mindset of the Deep South means it's progressive and more forward-thinking than many people would expect. Because you know what else is a good thing? Tolerance, understanding and generally living and let living regardless or race, gender, creed, or other differences. It's why melting pots are wonderful. No one has to give up anything about themselves and yet everyone can just be and live and get along.

"Slave Owning States," "Traitors," and "Uncle Tom Laws" are all also things that you don't hear referred to northern states either, so please don't act like "The South" is nothing but gentile manners. It's also a looooong history of slavery, white power, bigotry and closemindedness. I for one am GLAD that such things have been mostly eradicated by an influx of people from all around North America to this region of Florida.

(If you want The South in Florida, just head to Northern Florida and enjoy. The rest of us will stay in the 21st century, thanks ever so much.)

Yes. Racism, bigotry and closemindedness only exist in the south, and it wasn't until the glorious enlightenment from the North that southerners stopped being backwards hillbillies with two teeth and a NASCAR fetish.

Very well put.

You missed the point entirely. Typical. Your thought process is whats antiquated. Boston is one of the most racist cities in the U.S. always was. Last time I checked its above the Mason Dixon. South doesn't equal bigotry and racism. Get a clue.

Fact. Slavery flew under the US flag a lot longer than it did the CSA flag. Even after the civil war
Fact. US were traitors as well right or do you need a history lesson
Fact. Laws exist this very day in all states that hold back certain groups of people

So yeah you have heard allow those things about the North as well

No reasoning with the likes of that is there

It's so amusing when the people that can't contain their own hatred or disgust try to preach tolerance to the rest of us.

I'm sorry this happened to your thread, OP.

Intolorance is intolorable!

I guess some people know nothing about old Southern cities like New Orleans, Key West, Savannah and Charleston, etc. with diverse cultures and so much tradition. Accepting of all kinds. I swear some people have their minds made up and are too stubborn or ignorant to see reality.

The only thing I'm intolerant of is stupidity.

Agreed. Some people are so ignorant they fall into the lies that slavery was a product of the south when it was an export of Africa where it's still practiced.

So true.

I'm checking out of this thread. It's taken a turn that I'm partly to blame for. I'm partial to Florida and love her dearly. When she gets attacked I feel obligated to stick up for her. Should've just closed out and clicked on another thread. I stand by everything I said but nobody is going to change anyone's mind here.

I could write a book. It's better than I thought it would be. But for me, Florida was a lifelong dream. Seriously. Even as a little kid, I wanted to move to Florida, where there was no winter. I knew I didn't want to live out in nowhere, so the choices were Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa and Orlando for me. I did settle on Orlando because of the parks, though.

And I'd been thinking about it quite a bit for ten years, three of them very seriously.

It just happened that my son was moving on with his own life at the same time houses became dirt-cheap in Florida. And I was at the point of really thinking it was for me. And then winter came. Again.

It's much longer than all that, really. But that's the gist.

It's better. There are many drawbacks! Toll roads, rain, fires, insurance, hurricane worries...no decent potato salad in the grocery store...but all things added up, it's better.

The only thing I miss are the fall leaves. And my brother and dad have the yard guys toss a bunch into a few boxes, so I scatter them about and have them. :) The lawn guys here asked me what they were supposed to do with them, lol. Did I want them raked up? :) I said, "Just mow over them" and they looked at me. "really. It's fine, just mow right over them like they aren't there." :)

I hadn't planned on having a pool. I looked at houses and thought, "If the one I like has a pool, fine. If not, fine." But my pool is THE best part, I think! I don't ever want to live without one again!! And the next one will be bigger!

A lot better. :)
Luv! So funny I dreamed of living in florida since I was a little kid too. My grandmother lived in fL and we visited her often. I associated Florida with my sweet grandmother and always wanted to live there. And of course Disney!! We have been going since it opened. I also love the heat and the lush greenery. I still dream of moving there but it gets harder as roots get dug deeper in the north. But hopefully someday!!!!

Thanks for the post, I've always told my husband that the only way he could get me to move further south would be to Orlando only. But, I've also wondered if living there would ruin Disney for me so I've apreciated this thread.

All I hear is you live in Florida what about the hurricanes? We haven't had one in years! I live near West Palm Beach. How many Blizzards have you had? A lot more! I am 3 hours away from Disney near the beach. It is a lot cooler here than Disney being near the sea breezes. Close enough to visit though. If moving down to FL I would suggest stay away from Orlando all those bad things you here are from tourists who are causing them. Stay outside the area and it is great. We do have season's here. Fall is late Nov. and Dec. Winter is Jan. and Feb. and we do get into highs some days in the 30's. It just doesn't last long. When you have snow we have the best weather! Summer is the rainy season and yes it may rain everyday but only for less than an hour late afternoon. New England get summers in the mid 90's while here in Palm Beach County we are 80's! Been here 28 years from CT and would not go back to live ever. We also have no state income tax here!

With the exception of my history with the Southaven PD, I have to admit that I experienced WAAAY more racism up north than I have down here in good ole' Mississippi. I lived in Scranton for 3 years, and the first high school I attended was made up of roughly 500 kids. 5 black kids and me made up the entire minority population in that school. I had to endure endless ridicule from the "cool" wrestling jocks. I won't exactly tell you how I put an end to it, but let's just say that school security has been lacking for many years...
