Talking Trash Can

I was a CP in Tomorrowland Merchandise for the Spring Advantage 2003, and I knew the Talking Trash Can very well. It's tru that there is a talking trash can in Tomorrowland, and his name is Push. Push lives behind Mickey's Star Traders, and goes back and fourth from Merchant of Venus to the Tomorrowland Arcade through most of the day, Sunday through Thursday. There is another talking character, called West Palm, at the entrance to Animal Kingdom. West Palm is a palm tree that also moves and talks. If you see Push, he likes to dance and he'll play music for you too, and he really likes to have his picture taken. West Palm can tell you a lot of great jokes!

the AK one is actually called Wes Palm.

They aren't actually operated by Disney either... they're owned by a company called Robot Productions which Disney contracts to build, maintain, and operate them. They also do the R2-D2 in the Disney/MGM Studios Parade.

that's right...

2 talking trash cans, Wes Palm, and R2D2.

Apparently, they people who do this are paid rather well... after seeing the cars they pull to work in, I will not argue.

I think it's time for me to find a new job.. lol

Well, since this is the SECRETS board, can anyone explain the SECRET to these robots?

Is the operator in a room underground or in a building and just interact through a camera, or can they actually see from a window or somewhere?

There was a robot in EPCOT that talked with a guy that came out with him - and they did a bit. I kept looking around for the operator.

Any help here?

there's a person on the street walking in the vicinity controlling him via a "hidden remote." Not so much hidden, since its in a bag. and the voice is done by the same person via a lapel mic on the wrist.

I saw Push last week while I was there, and with very close searching was able to find the voice. Had I not been looking that closely though, I never would've seen him or expected he was involved in any way.

So, does the "voice" dress in street clothes? Do they stand out in any way? I presume that they don't wear suits, or nametags - and try to blend in. However, seeing some guy who keeps talking to his wrist would be weird, and suspicious.

So, do they actually mill about in the crowd, or stand off to the side somewhere?

There was a circle standing around Push watching. His operator was standing in the circle acting as if he was a tourist watching also. Standing in the back row of the circle, but just watching. And had his hand up to his mouth talking.

The operator I saw was pretty good(kinda like the Risk Management Dept) he blended in but hung back,he was wearing shorts and a tshirt and sunglasses and a hat. He had a backpack slung over one shoulder and his hand was in it,and he did have his wrist up to his mouth.

My Uncle Pete, who works in the garbage business, had a "conversation" with the talking trash can near Conservation Station. Uncle Pete told him he was in the trash business and was told "it was ok to talk trash" then when the trash can asked if he rode on the backs of the big trash trucks he said he wishes he could be the truck when he grows up (the can). But the funniest was when he asked my uncle "You're not my father are you? My long lost dad?" definitely a funny memory caught on video

At AK in front of the ticketing area there is this potted tree which moves around as entertainment. My best memory of that was where this kid kicked it to which the plant replied 'How would you like it if I kicked you in the planter'?

The talking trash can at DAK in Rafikis Planet Watch is PIPA (Swahili SP? for trash can). He and I were buds when I worked there. Always great to be greater when he was doing his trash run. My favorite thing was when PIPA would help me park strollers and ask for kids icecream. Always fun to watch the kids reactions! Also, when Rafiki came out side for autographs pipa would wait in line with the guests and get his picture taken with Rafiki. Disney magic at its best...

Isn't there a talking trash can by the Electric Umbrella in Epcot? I'm positive there was, but they may have moved it to Tomorrowland. I never thought it was operated by someone else though, considering that it only talked when I opened the lid, and was quite repetitive in what it said... perhaps I just wasn't interacting w/ it in a way that the operater could respond creatively.

I also know for sure that there is a talking water fountain, I think, again somewhere near the EU (not the European Union, smart alecs! ) I remember clearly that this was not operated by someone, but just said something everytime you pushed the button to get a drink.
