Surprise! Red Tier Now Begins Sunday; Downtown Disney Restaurants???

Great question.

I'm afraid because the announcement of the sudden and sweeping lifting of the Stay-At-Home Order literally just a few days after elected leaders were using language like "These are the darkest hours of our darkest days", most restaurants had no plans for this and will need some time to restock, restaff, and restart.

Maybe give it a week or two? It's all part of the exciting adventure of being a small business owner in the Golden State!

Owners and staff in some Orange County business sectors, including restaurants, gyms and hair and nail salons, welcomed the surprising news Monday, Jan. 25, that they could immediately reopen – at least outdoors in some cases – after state health officials lifted the latest stay-at-home order, which all Southern California counties had been under since Dec. 6.

Restaurants and gyms can open outdoors and nail and hair salons can reopen indoors at limited capacity – but everyone must wear a mask, said Gov. Gavin Newsom during a news conference on Monday. Certain youth sports competitions can resume, he said.
Which youth sports? My kid plays ice hockey and I’m pretty sure that’s not on the list.

I'm afraid I can't find any solid information, just stories about coaches being confused and surprised but still in the dark on what is allowed and what's not.

I did find this little nugget from a San Diego TV station I watch...

"A press conference will be held Wednesday in Sacramento regarding the initiative which calls on Newsom to allow youth sports in the state to resume."

So, it sounds like we need to stay tuned for another day?

He better allow ice hockey. It’s not like basketball or baseball or football in which players touch a ball. You whack a puck with a stick.

It's actually kind of ridiculous youth sports were cancelled. Covid typically spreads during extended conversation in an enclosed room. The outdoors, or a large gym with proper airflow would be among the places least likely for a virus to spread.

Not to mention, vitamin D and physical health have been shown to help reduce Covid's impact on a person. And youth are statistically the least likely to have a serious covid case. Not to mention the positive impacts exercise and sports and team activities have on mental health and morale, which I imagine is even more important this year with schools closed and children forced to sit in front of a computer all day for school.

Obviously, if the kid lives with guardians who are significantly at risk to have covid complications, they might not want to take the risk. But for the rest of the kids- let them play!

I've been thinking about the long term impact Covid might have on California's growth. If I had to guess there will be an aversion from businesses to open in California- especially those that are deemed 'non essential'. I wonder if legislation will have to be passed offering some kind of protections to business owners in order to help restore some semblance of trust?

I couldn't imagine a Disney building Disneyland in California in the year 2020. But, I could see someone building a major destination in Florida. Or Texas. Or Utah.

Agreed.

Apparently there was a large contingent of coaches (and their lawyers) who went up to Sacramento last week and pressed Newsom to rescind his draconian closures of all youth sports in California. They brought Science & Data that showed healthy kids and their healthy young coaches are minimally impacted by Covid (or likely not impacted one bit) and are not spreaders of Covid in any meaningful way when they play hockey or football or baseball or soccer. You may actually know more about that than me as a hockey dad yourself?

That we have damaged an entire generation of young Californians like this for the past year is criminal, in my opinion. But that's another topic.

Thank goodness that suddenly, out of nowhere, all the Science & Data has been thrown out the window and the Stay-At-Home Order and Statewide Curfew were cancelled effective immediately. Not a phased approach, not a stair step, just cancelled outright immediately with one single press conference. Poof!

My son plays at Great Park Ice and since the league shut down in March, he’s been taking private sessions. It’s about $55 a session but at least hes practicing. Funny thing is that all players and coaches have to wear masks. When you are a kid, there is no contact so I have no idea why the state doesn’t allow them to play.

So are we still waiting for the yellow tier for Disneyland to open? At some point those tiers will have to be edited right? Or maybe they ll throw it out all together because of the vaccine distribution?

Yes, allegedly the Four Tiers To A Safer Economy, or whatever it was called, is still in effect. Now that the Regional Stay-At-Home Order and Statewide Curfew was cancelled immediately out of nowhere with one long-winded press conference, we've gone back to the Four Tiers.

And those Four Tiers haven't changed.

Disneyland must (allegedly) wait until OC reaches the Yellow Tier, and then Disneyland may reopen at 25% capacity and not use indoor queues or helium balloons or any wind instruments.

I think also the nice ladies who work in the Silhouette Studio on Main Street are also forbidden from plying their craft in the Yellow Tier, but we'll need a two hour press conference from Governor Newsom on that to be certain.

Good for you for being a good dad and keeping that kid active and engaged! And at 55 bucks a pop!

I'm an old grumpy, childless bachelor who never minded not having children. But I just get even grumpier when I think about how the past year has damaged our youth in this state. Schools closed, classes cancelled, sports cancelled, Proms and plays and clubs cancelled. It's criminal.

Thank God there are good parents like you and @mickEblu who have tried to maintain a semblance of normalcy for these kids who are statistically untouched by Covid. I just want you to know that while our Sacramento betters may ignore you, some folks notice. Even grumpy, childless bachelors who never wanted kids. ;)

I know we ve been down this “wishful thinking” road before but do you think Disney sees some light at the end of the tunnel and maybe knows something we don’t? Between the Edna Mode billboard I’ve been seeing saying to “Be Incredible, Wear a mask” and them being a major vaccine distribution center, do you think they have some inkling that Sacramento is willing to play nice? With all of these blog posts regarding updates to rides or new rides like MMRR and Spiderman you have to wonder. Of course it could be nothing but little carrots to give us fans to keep us going to DTD and interested in the brand.

I hate to be a downer, but to buy into the thought that "Disney knows something we don't", you'd kind of need to be a Conspiracy Theorist. And while this may anger my old friend @Dr. Hans Reinhardt, I've never thought much of big conspiracies; I just don't think anyone is that organized. Not Disney, not Washington DC, not Sacramento, not even me.

I honestly believe everyone is taking this week by week, and their plans for the next week change day by day, often based on a 24 hour news cycle and a 12 hour Twitter cycle.

So who knows where we will be 3 weeks from now? Or 3 months from now? No one really knows.

But, if you are to use the official instructions based on Science & Data that our Sacramento betters have officially communicated to us, Disneyland will only reopen once Orange County reaches the Yellow Tier for three consecutive weeks. Which, based on current trends, places the reopening of Disneyland at 25% capacity and using no wind instruments sometime around this September or October.

I can't imagine the Herculean task of reopening Disneyland after 18 months of closure. I'd assume at that point just about every hourly CM would have moved on and (hopefully) found employment elsewhere, either out of boredom or financial necessity. So you'd basically have to hire and train enough staff to operate two full theme parks. But with so many people already laid off, including many 'trainers', how do you even go about this?

Then there's ordering the food and merchandise for the park. And costuming. And the hotels.

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise capacity will be limited for the time, since that will allow them to staff fewer employees throughout the park and allow Disneyland a bit of a trial run before things go back to some semblance of normal Disneyland.

unmitigated disaster

Also, they're still using the parking lots for vaccines, aren't they? They would be kept somewhat in the loop through that, wouldn't they?

Even if they got everyone back because they'd all turned into Uber Eats drivers, it's going to take them a bit to get back into the swing. One of our front desk supervisors was furloughed from March through the middle of June and she took a week or two to remember everything and get back into the swing by of things.
