Sup with these new ugly magic band boxes?

This is less wasteful. Happy Earth Day.

I did think the old box was fantastic, and gave you the feeling of opening something precious, something important. They put fairly cheap and non-delicate bands on a similar pedestal as expensive, delicate Apple products. That was impressive.

But I'll trade the extra "wow" for more environmentally friendly and less costly packaging.
Earth Day or not, how dare you suggest that something as inconsequential as the environment is of greater priority than our magical vacations. ;)

If Disney really wanted to reduce waste, they'd simply have all guests pick up their Magic Bands upon arrival, or send an email in advance asking if they would like to reuse a band from a previous trip [do they do that?].
Haha no they don't!!!! I laugh because that was my initial thought when I read changing the box was for cost reduction. My family has about 20 magic bands. Yes you can decline them but I paid for them in my vacation why would I do that. they could have seen that they've sent me a band before or atleast recently and send a band it character or something in a smaller box with a lot less packaging or even a pin instead of a new magic band every trip!

I'll be honest, I've been surprised at the number of negative responses on this thread. Especially from those equating this to "Apple un-boxing" videos. I struggle to imagine that anyone would not buy an Apple product because the unboxing experience were less special. In fact, I'd argue that if you need a special unboxing experience to enjoy the product, the product leaves something to be desired.

So, @Delgado ... would you cancel your vacation if you were asked to re-use previously used magic bands? You're paying thousands of dollars for an experience, and THIS is what you balk at?

You've completely missed the boat on why they even did this in the first place.

I guess people take for granted now the impact apple and other championed that brought the term "unboxing experience" into the lexicon.

The shioment was to project innovation , tech, personalization, quality, and generate excitement for your trip. Same reason the conpant sends glossy, higher cost cards, etc and not just a simple teletype message. Your materials are part of what you project.

I think disney should have worked more on reducing duplication rather than cutting across the board.

Exactly, Supposedly Disney wants the upper 5% as their target demographic if so the EXPERIENCE which includes magic band deliver must have a good feel. Not the WalMart customer service level they are delivering now

Old boxes are coated 2 side SBS (solid bleached sulfite). A more expensive product.

New boxes are recycled coated 1 side white top.

I hear what the OP is saying, but it really is a waste. Two boxes two get thrown away (well recycled). It's like the old long CD boxes. Some of you know what CDs are right?
The recycle stream needs new fiber all the time. Paper is not infinitely recyclable.

Oh, the horror! :joyfull:

Heck, my old boxes weren't even recycled...They were thrown right into the trash with all my other cardboard and garbage which is burned as fuel at the local transfer station to heat water and generate steam, turning turbines attached to generators and sending electricity back into the grid.

On the other hand, had they been "recycled", they would have gone to the recycling plant which draws a large demand on the electrical grid, requiring more fossil fuels to be burned at the power plant to account for the lack of power re-generation at the transfer station.

Throw them away! You are helping the environment. :p
Landfilling is a form of carbon sequestration.

Better yet, we should cut down trees and put them directly in the landfill.

The old boxes had class.
They proudly announced that the contents were special and JUST FOR YOU.....
They gave the receivers the impression that Disney was proud to sent these items to you in anticipation of your upcoming visit.
Disney is shooting themselves in the foot by telling the customers that they are no longer deserving of the uplifting experience of receiving a special package to prepare them for their much anticipated, and very expensive, vacation.
The new box looks as though it might contain sex toys along with a note saying."We got your money. Here's your crap."

Did they change ALL the boxes? Because this was my Passholder box from last year. Different style (it slides out vs hinged open) and I still have it because, I don't know, I thought it was cool.

I don't mind a less wasteful box, but it's always been the "little things" that differentiate Disney and makes it special. I feel like maybe they could have found a better compromise between waste and presentation.

I guess I'm confused on what I am balking at? I never said anything about an unboxing experience. I stated I was disappointed with a box. When you expect one thing and get crap I think it's normal to have disappointment. I had always reused the box for my children to put their special stuff in from that trip. Nothing earth shattering going on.
I think you're being a bit dramatic with your question but to answer, I reuse my magic band anyways even though I'm not asked. More just get collected because disneys including it with the price of my trip so the kids make garland with them or give them to friends.
Like I had said if removing that specific box was to reduce waste and cost there are better ways. They keep track of everything I do with my band, they know if I have one, don't send me another. Send a luggage tag, a pin, or something like a bandit that takes barely any packaging and is probably cheaper than a band.

Its the 'little' things which Disney is relentlessly eliminating from the experience. The boxes are just a placeholder for larger things which Disney has eliminated from the Disney Experience

My post office make me pick up my magic bands because there was a rash of threats from mail boxes. So I can see going with a non-description outer box announcing that it was from Disney.

My tax return check came in a plain white envelope and I was really happy when I opened it. I think I'll survive the change in magic band boxes.
Dang, a tax return??? That exists? I thought it was a myth! I'm sure they could skip the white envelope and use pixie dust to make it appear in your bank account! Now that I ain't mad at.
