@ the environmentally friendly responses - really guys? you're glad disney got cheap with their packaging because now there's smaller/cheaper materials and that's somehow helping the environment? or are you just incapable of admitting disney did something disappointing

different opinions happen but this one's baffling me. did disney put out a press release that they're going green, or did a few people completely make this up to defend the crummy packaging?
Ummm, if WDW did care about green they would not have paved the swamp and invited millions of people to leave their waste there.

Given you are just getting back what is rightfully yours, and not paying to obtain it...

A tad different than the MB situation.

Ever purchase a $2,500 laptop? Do you like it to be packed nicely or just dropped in a corrugated box?

How about a nice restaurant? Sure they could just toss your food on a paper plate with some plastic silverware, but presentation matters. You are paying more, so you expect more.

The same goes with the $400 plastic ticket you bought for your $2000 hotel room, the presentation implies value. When it's a cheap box, it lowers that implied value.

Disney is losing out on cheap, easy implied value to save a few pennies.
Actually I only need a $500 laptop, if the food is good it can be on paper plates, and I love the All-Star Sports so my room is only $500. The only thing I need cardboard boxes for is my cat and he doesn't discriminate.

Not true. The magic is not something someone else can tell you what the magic should be to them. Why some people line up to see the opening of Magic Kingdom when others have never see it and could care less. And if you truly believe that most people don't care about what is on a card then you are fooling yourself. Why do you think Credit card companies have millions of people that pick unique images to put on their credit cards? Why do you think a 5 star hotel will go out of their way to present the room key in a very nice holder with custom pen when they write you room number on it? It's all part of the experience.
I fool myself all the time. But I know that the token is not as important as what the token means. One token gets me into the MK for a day. Another token that looks pretty much the same gets me into the MK for a year. As for being unique, every one of my "paper" APs had a unique image on the back. I didn't get to pick it, but it was unique.
... or are you just incapable of admitting disney did something disappointing
It's only disappointing if one is disappointed. Personally, I'm not.

I could say this baffles me that others care so much about something so minor in the grand scheme of things. So difference of opinions. Until we could finally decline the bands we were getting often 2-3 of these a year. So yes, I am glad it is done. It's not just better to have less packaging environmentally, but the ease of breaking down the new boxes is much better. Those old ones were a PITA to recycle.

I don't think it is kind to insult people for varying opinions though. You have yours and I have mine. I am not the type that needs everything to be pinterest perfect in my life so a box is a box - and I appreciate when companies find easier methods.

Oh and the comment someone made about a laptop? I just bought a $1700 one a few months back. Guess what? The packaging was more minimal AND it was made out of more environmentally friendly materials... the box made a point to say so. So that argument doesn't hold water with me. Expensive computers don't equate to fancy packaging either.

Didn't disappoint me in the least. Neither did the packaging when I ordered one new magic band so I could put it on a keychain. I am so glad to be done with the bands on my arm for sure! Unless it breaks or the batteries die, I won't be getting a new one for a very long time.

Mylar or a huge amount of wet strength resin?
Mylar - if you google you'll see it mentioned everywhere with the APs. I simply just blanked on the name and didn't google to find out yesterday. They really were very sturdy. I used the heck out of the one I posted pictures of :)

Does anyone else think they may of changed the outer packaging due to theft of the boxes? Also drop one of those at your doorstep and it announces to the world that you will be on vacation for a week, so pay attention so you can rob me.

I think the outside being non-descriptive is a good move. The inside could still be a bit more magical however, that I agree with.

Our first few sets of MB's were inside of a larger brown package that we had to open to reveal the Incredibles box.

I doubt the average criminal who steals packages from doorsteps has ever booked a WDW Resort stay and is aware of what Magic Bands are and that it means the family is going on vacation.

That makes sense. The last box we got was not in an outer wrapping. And you be surprised at criminals these days. For a while we kept getting people stopping by trying to give us quotes for new windows. What they were actually doing was probing to see what you had inside your house and when you were going to not be home. Scary world sometimes out there.

Yes, we get those "sales people" as well. You can tell the difference between the legit AT&T rep who is wearing identification and there is an official company vehicle parked close by, VS the random guy in cargo pants and a t-shirt. I open my door with my 120 pound Cane Corso and my Dutch Shepherd standing there growling, and that usually sends a clear message, LOL.

I've been using my box from a year or two ago to store my current magicbands. I probably have 10 or so designed bands that I like to rotate depending on what I'm feeling and what park I go to. Idk why anyone would just throw the nice ones out. They were built sturdy and have been great to store all the bands.

I'll be honest, I've been surprised at the number of negative responses on this thread. Especially from those equating this to "Apple un-boxing" videos. I struggle to imagine that anyone would not buy an Apple product because the unboxing experience were less special. In fact, I'd argue that if you need a special unboxing experience to enjoy the product, the product leaves something to be desired.

So, @Delgado ... would you cancel your vacation if you were asked to re-use previously used magic bands? You're paying thousands of dollars for an experience, and THIS is what you balk at?

I've owned every single iPhone on release day. I camped out overnight for the first one..and arrived by 5am for the next 3.. .
All of that and I can honestly say that the actual packaging of the iPhone is the least that I care about when getting my phone.
And I'm an Apple electronic addict.lol

Its the 'little' things which Disney is relentlessly eliminating from the experience. The boxes are just a placeholder for larger things which Disney has eliminated from the Disney Experience

At what point do landfills come before our selfish desire for wasteful shiny packaging?

Ok so, I just spent a ridiculous amount of money for 3 nights at GWL. We ordered a pizza while there.. the box turned itno plates and folded into a storage container.
Should I be mad that I ate off of pizza box cardboard plates while spending that kind of money?lol. I personally loved it. I wish more places would do this.

Because some people can't stand clutter. ;) I do save some things, but they end up in a box in the basement.. until I decide to throw it all out a year later.lol

Well, I don't just keep it for the sake of keeping a box. But I re-use it to store all of my magicbands that I buy.
I get it! I was just kind of laughing at myself, I can't stand to keep anything that I don't "need". When I try to.. they end up thrown out later.
I think a lot of people were probably doing the same with the MagicBand boxes.

I have one I used for that, except I don't buy them so I had half a dozen boxes I didn't need from the trips we couldn't decline a band. They aren't bad if you have a use for them, but most we did not.

True... I guess if you're getting them once or twice a year with resort packages, they add up quick. I usually decline my AP magicband these days, as I definitely don't need any (especially when they're just the solid colors). Really the only incentive is to get the slider, and I think they've stopped adding the years on them now anyway.

Folks, it's time to accept two basic facts. The only reasons Disney does anything are:
1). Spend money if they believe it will make them more money (DVC, Avatar, Star Wars, send you a fancy box to make you think Magic Bands are special, etc.)
2). Reduce their expenses to increase profit.

If Disney was concerned about being "green" they would have used these cheap, ugly boxes from day one.

I think profit was the largest motivator. But I'm ok with that. Reducing waste and reducing costs- really no downside for a business there.

They don't even always send out the sliders anymore. The DVC ones have been gone for years and the AP I think we got once only. Not a huge deal since I am not a fan of the new bands so mine is a keychain now!

I guess that's the problem. Those who go infrequently probably would appreciate the packaging more. Someone like me who goes a few times a year and has the APs, just doesn't. Just glad we can finally decline the bands. That saves me getting boxes anyway!
