Sunblock/sunscreen

The sun is bright in Orlando and it seems like I never pick the right sunblock.

Which sunblock do you use when you visit WDW? How often do you reapply it?

I get Spf 70 by either Coppertone or Banana Boat, the one you just spray on. We reapply every few hours, more frequent on the kids. I always end up with a nice healthy tan and no sunburn.

Neutrogena Helioplex Dry Touch in SPF 70 or 85 - whatever. Either way,the stuff is awesome and is totally non-greasy and protects wonderfully. Doesn't clog pores and you never get the smothering feeling from it. I live here in Florida and am very fair skinned and use it all the time and never burn.

I'm a fan of Coppertone's oil free waterproof line. I don't break out from it and they have it in higher SPFs too. Plus the formulation isn't as greasy because of the oilfree. And in Orlando, where its not just hot but humid, the waterproof factor is useful. I use the SPF 30. But I think it also depends on how fast you burn and what your tolerance level is. I'm as pale as a ghost most of the time but oddly enough rarely burn. My sister has a more rosier complexion and has always burned like a lobster so she uses that but reapplies more than I do.

I also temper the sun with hats which I've found to be a huge help.

I think alot of it has to do with what your particular skin issues are. There are some beauty forums that give reviews of products and you could always post your issues there and someone may have found success with a certain product.

Ditto to everything above, except I don't live in Florida - just visit often! :)

Another ditto. I frequently have to spend hours on the water, and this really works. I also use Bullfrog if I'm actually going into the water.

And don't forget that sunscreen works best if you apply it before going outside, not if you wait until you think you need it. And it's so much easier to apply in private - just put a towel down if you're using the spray.

Neturogena Heliplex is the only way to go! It's the best! Now...what do I use in the Pool? still working on that one, but I did find Coppertone sensitive skin that's waterproof.
I would say I reapply after lunch, maybe 11:45 and again in afternoon when in the parks. But I also wear a hat, can't be too careful.

Whatever sport spray is on sale in SPF 45 or above.

If we are just going to the parks, an application before we go out takes care of us pretty much all day. (A REAL application, most people do not apply it as directed and so your SPF 80 turns into an SPF 10)

If we are going to be in the sun a LOT - like at a waterpark, then I will take it with us and reapply again at mid-day.

Banana Boat, I think it was Ultra light or something. It was very light to wear. I use a 35 SPF and DH with the the red hair has at least a SPF of 50. No burns, did tan. One thing I would remind people of is the top of your ears if they are exposed. One of the most annoying sunburns I ever had was on the tops of my ears during a tour with the Army.

Like everyone else, a spray- I use aveeno spf 70 for my face since it isnt greasy, and banana boat sport for everything else. both worked well on my last trip, i came home with no burn at all (and i burn easy). I only had to reapply once in the afternoon for both (we didn't do any water parks so no help on waterproof ones).

Third ditto here...I have the aerosol can and its easy to apply and re-apply on myself as well as my kids. Plus the cool mist feels heavenly and refreshing on a hot afternoon. I have had skin cancer and my dermatolgist turned me onto this great sunblock. It might cost a little more but it definitely is worth its weight in gold.

I am red headed and was really worried about our trip last summer (June/July) but to be honest I only used sunscreen the first day of our 8 day trip and forgot it the second day and realized I didn't need it. I did wear a nice hat with a brim that goes all the way around but I never got a bit of a sun burn on our entire 8 day trip, and I am not a tanner all I do is blister and peel. I was really surprised.

I have the spray too and I find it's great for like legs and such where it takes a lot of work to put lotion on. I tend to use the lotion for my neck/chest type areas and the spray for arms and legs. And it's weird because it really DOES feel cool on the skin! :D

You may have dodged a bullet but I wouldn't risk purposefully not wearing sunscreen. People often underestimate the intensity of the UV rays here and wind up getting severe burns - even 2nd degree burns. And having been burned once to a 2nd degree sunburn myself (despite knowing better as a Florida resident) I can assure you, having your skin crack open, blister and bleed all while running a fever is just about the least fun someone can have.

No reason to risk ruining a vacation when sunscreen is an easy step! :)

Has anyone ever used the Proactive sunblock? I bought it for my face as all other types seem to make me break out (guessing the other Proactive products I use don't mix well with others). I'm really only worried about it because it is only SPF 30 and I tend to need more protection.

I will definitely look into the Neutrogena Helioplex for my body though!! As long as it goes to at least SPF 70, I'm good to go!!

EDIT: Just looked up Neutrogena Helioplex and realized I have some!!! LOL I didn't realize what it was. I forget if it worked though. Guess I'll have to try it at the beach before I move down to the World.

Oh yes I have been there many times even when using sun screen. I attribute my luck to a few factors. First we arrived at the parks at rope drop and went to the room during the heat of the day. There is plenty of shade and most queues are inside or shaded. And I wore my hat religiously.

I'm usually bad for not applying sunscreen and paid for it this past trip last month when I fell asleep on one of the chairs around Pop's bowling pin pool. Woke up BURNT and ended up spending our last night at WDW in our room with a touch of sun/heat stroke. We had brought a bunch down with us, but earlier in the week when I applied some (it was the spray kind) and laid around the pool for a bit, I noticed that night that my body had a bunch of pink blotches all over it that looked like welts. I am guessing it was from the spray not being as thick or getting on those areas of something.

So in other words, I couldn't win if I tried! :ROFLOL:

Did you apply the spray in your room, before getting dressed, with a slow even spray?

If you wait to apply it until you are outside, the breeze will cause it to apply unevenly. I've also found that I do a more thorough job when I'm not in public, with that onstage feeling.
