Sunblock/sunscreen

Hey! I'm a red-head with sensitive skin and I love Coppertone Oil-Free. I've had a lot of experience with sunscreen and this one absorbs quickly, doesn't leave your skin feeling oily and is generally less expensive than the Neutrogena Helioplex (even though I normally buy one tube of the Neutrogena for my face since it is a very nice formula and again isn't oily).

I never use anything less than a 45spf ever and I've found it's most important to apply the first coat before I leave the room to make sure that I have a "base coat" before I start the day. I usually will reapply every few hours or more often if I'm sweating/got wet on a ride or if I can feel the sun beating down on my skin.

I started using the Badger Balm sunscreens a few years ago and really like them. They may feel a bit greasier at first, but rub in nicely. Most likely due to the fact that they use olive oil in most of their products.

FYI, check out the Environmental Working Group's 2010 sunscreen report here -> http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/ They go into detail about lots of the ingredients in your sunscreen that may not really be good for you at all. You may end up rethinking your choice of sunscreen. They also have a cosmetic guide that does the same thing, but since I don't use cosmetics I have never looked at it.

I pick my sun block like this:

"Mmmm this one smells good"

"Mmmm this one smells better"

"MMMMMM This one smells like god!"

I use whatever Sport Spray is cheapest. Honestly on my last trip (May 2010) I didn't really use a lot of sunscreen. Disney does a good job of having enough gift shops/rides/umbrellas/restaurants that are shaded that we usually go from place to place...spending not a ton of time in the sun.

But I always spray my scalp before I go out. I part my hair to the side and that little line of scalp always gets burnt! Don't forget your toes too for you flip flip wearers!

Did you apply the spray in your room, before getting dressed, with a slow even spray?

If you wait to apply it until you are outside, the breeze will cause it to apply unevenly. I've also found that I do a more thorough job when I'm not in public, with that onstage feeling.

I know, that is what I SHOULD have done. :o Instead, the wind probably blew it all over the people next to me and gave THEM the extra protection! :ROFLOL:

Very good point! That is the area on me that gets burnt the worst every trip...and this coming from a bald guy who usually forgets to wear a hat to the parks most days!

UPDATE

I purchased Neutrogena Helioplex dry touch 100+ SPF for $12 at Target.

I put it on and it really did feel different from every other sunblock that I have tried. The dry touch was amazing and exactly what I was looking for. I tested it out at Disneyland last weekend and really liked it.
Thanks for the advice everyone!

Has anyone ever used the Proactive sunblock? I bought it for my face as all other types seem to make me break out (guessing the other Proactive products I use don't mix well with others). I'm really only worried about it because it is only SPF 30 and I tend to need more protection.

I use all Proactiv products EXCEPT the sunscreen - I use Garnier Anti-Sun damage lotion with SPF 28 as my daily moisturizer. When I'm going to be in a lot of sun I also use the Target oil free sunblock spray (I think it's SPF 50 in a blue bottle). I use that on my face and body and have never had a problem with it wreaking havoc on my face (nearly everything else makes me breakout - gotta love pushing 40 and still worrying about that nonsense!!)

I always buy the coppertone spray on 30 SPF. Seems to work for me, and it's very easy to apply. Plus, it's waterproof, so you don't have to worry about it coming off. As a matter of fact, my DW says she is switching to the spray on, because in the past she uses the lotion, but the last trip she used my spray on and loved it.

Have fun!

I have Tattoos so I always use an SPF grade of 30 or more and something that is sweat and water proff. To protect my work from "bleaching" (lightening) I always look for a UVA and UVB Protectant Bar that I use liberally on my tats, also consider using this on your lips since the skin on your lips is more vulnerable to the sun . I always apply all SPF's 30min before heading outside since it takes the products active ingredients that amount of time to be active (seriously not a joke) and I reapply at least once during the day around or after lunch since this is when the sun is at its hottest and strongest (also not a joke).
How do I know all this? Oustside of experience, I am a Licensed Paramedical Esthetician with experience of working in a Plastic Surgeon / Dermatological office.

For the ladies out there, if you don't already, use a good mineral make-up in addition to your face lotion with SPF. Mineral make-up also has a bit of SPF to it. :animwink:

True! I put on my daily face lotion with SPF then use my mineral make-up on-top and I think it definitely helps keep my face from burning, even just in the day-to-day.
