Good write-up. I just can’t see TLJ doing 80-89% of TFA business though. ESB was at like 64% of Star Wars domestic total by the end of its run I think (i’m too lazy to calculate an exact amount right now but that is what I remember hearing someone say at some point). If that is true, I think that TLJ would be killing it to make even 70% of what TFA made. We will know a lot more after this weekend though.

I don't see any evidence after 7 days that 80-90% is realistic...

That would be $1.8 ish...

Just as an indicator...last jedi's weekend take was $27 mil off force awakens...

After 7 days...it's $95 mill off

So that's down 11% on the opening weekend...25% by yesterday

Force awakens opened on December 17th...this one on the 14th...

3 days is worth 25%? Perhaps...but that math doesn't get you to 80-90% in the end.

Yeah, I just don’t see it happening either...and we don’t agree on much but on this we do. However. I do think we’ll see a little catching up this weekend and next week to narrow that percentage gap...just because of how the school calendar worked for this release. 70% of TLJ at the end of its run is my target for being an over the top success. 65% is more realistic. Anything less than 60% would be a disappointment for me and I think Disney does some serious rethinking where this is all headed. We’ll see.

It doesn't seem like it. All the totals from individual countries are as from the 17th. But the total is listed as of the 21 simply because that's when they added all the other countries up, none of whom are updated since the weekend.

@Quinnmac000 is correct. The running total of 314 is based on every international market through Thursday. It's labour intensive for BO mojo to update each individual market and they usually do that once a week. However, there's no unaccounted for money in the total.

Do you happen to know if the international totals come in every day and what boxofficemojo’s source is?

Yes, for Star Wars at least they do. They are eventually official industry figures provided by the studio.

That said I much prefer Deadline for International figures. Nancy Tartaglione does a better job at editorializing. Box office mojo doesn't really editorialize the international takes.

If people are planning on going to see Star Wars on 12/22-12/24...cause they're not busy enough...and couldn't do it 12/18-12/21...cause so much is going on in school those days...

...then that is an interesting turn...

But here's the thing...Star Wars ran until 1979, more or less, in the NATO world. Now 6 weeks is ballgame for the MEGA hits...

By 1/2 its gonna be pretty easy to see what happens here.

There will never be anything like Star Wars ever again imho. I still remember lines wrapping around theater buildings multiple times. It was mania. I know you get it because you were there, but I really believe that unless a person was alive back then and experienced it, it is next to impossible to understand the impact the movie had on us...at least in America. I mean it was literally all my friends and I could talk about and it became more of a lifestyle than entertainment. I can’t even explain it. You just had to be there.

Edit: I just noticed you are only 40 so you missed the experience. But trust me it was absolute lunacy...in a good way.

Right...I'm not saying there ever can be another Star Wars...just point out how different it is now and that movies can be rated on gross much quicker...

Thor:ragnarok has like a 93% rating on the movie sites...and here we are 6 weeks in and I could only find it at one theater in my area for tomorrow...and my area is very upscale suburb in a major east coast metro market...

The stakes are higher...if you don't take it fast, you're done.

Many semester final exams in high school, college, grad school etc -- occur during the middle of December. Dec 14-21. Does every student/family hold off because of it? Of course not. But your claim that it isn't a busy time in school is incorrect.

Grad school I can see...high school "semester finals" sounds like college...and I seem to remember them not making 44,000 rats disperse into the wild 2 days before Christmas on the weekend...

But maybe my puritanical schools was "liberal"

Let's see what happens the next 9 days or so...it's worth watching...

Anecdotal, I know, but y'all are discussing the movie's performance and based solely on what I've seen, Disney should probably be worried. I just saw a 9:30 imax showing on a Friday night in the biggest theater in the city and there were only 12 people in there.

The movie was a huge mess, BTW. Can't say I hated it like I hated Rogue One, but it was a definite step down from Force Awakens. The movie is saved almost singlehandedly by Adam Driver's performance.

I was kind of all Star Wars-ed out before I saw this movie, but now I have exactly zero interest in seeing where this goes next. Other than Adam Driver not getting killed, this felt like the last film in the series anyway; a logical stopping point.

Just out of curiosity... I just looked at a 330 and 7pm showing for tonight... (2 out of the 10 showings they have today at this theatre)

Still pretty busy here :)
