What Bio calls a "bowl" here at the Toy Story entrance looks to me like a blast crater complete with surrounding debris:

That makes total sense considering the horizontal line pattern that's present to the left of the crater and above the TSL entrance. Could be that this area was a bit nicer at one time and then a battle or disaster of some sort did some damage. Could even be the cause of the trees dying and being petrified.

At first they were afraid, they were petrified. Kept thinking they could never live without Hondo at their side. But then they spent so many nights thinking Hondo did them wrong, and the grew strong, and they learned how to get along. And Hondo's back, from outer space. Did he think they'd crumble? Did he think they'd lay down and die? Oh no, not the Spire, the Spire will survive.
