Star Wars Land announced for Disney's Hollywood Studios

Yup. They just wanted a place where the fans could celebrate the franchise. A place to experience the things people love about the saga.
Choosing to place the land in the canon and timeline of the sequel trilogy, aside, this is easier to achieve with Potter due to the nature of the IP. Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, and Diagon are integral to Potter and 95% of the series takes place in them. They also already had well-known fictional stores and restaurants in the IP to develop. Star Wars does not have either of these. The closest thing is Tattooine but then you limit other elements.

Personally, while I think hard setting the land in the sequel trilogy hurts it a little, I still think this is an evolutionary (not revolutionary) step in theme park design to have a theme park experienec be canonical.

Especially with some of the recent rumors floating around, I think if Universal ever does a Lord of the Rings land they will probably use a similar approach. A wide-reaching universe with an expansive timeline that connects with multiple generations, even if one particular era is the most iconic one.... there are a lot of similarities between the LotR and SW IPs. And I think it’s just too tempting to go all out and develop all new adventures in familiar-yet-unique environment rooted in a canonical timeframe. For the right kind of IP, I could see this template becoming the standard model.

We traveled to Batuu for the second time yesterday and had a blast. My daughter especially had a magical time because my daughter wore her Rey costume, and had so many CMs interact with her.

But the two Stormtroopers that "accosted" her really took it to another level. However they trigger the different lines of dialogue is pretty awesome, because they were shaving a whole conversation with her. I really wished my battery hadn't died, because we had a crowd around us cheering her on and she defiantly stood up to them. Any chance anybody here was over by the Droid Dept around 11 am yesterday?!

But "My personal Star Wars Adventure" includes original trilogy characters, so it should work to have any character in Batuu.

I can imagine few theme park jobs more difficult than playing a Stormtrooper. It seems incredibly hard. I don’t think I could do it, and I applaud the CMs who do. Do they get paid more than the average CM?

They are possibly my favorite walk-around characters ever. I always have my license handy in Galaxy’s Edge. Also, I like when they go for humor, which must make Kathleen Kennedy’s skin crawl but it works.

I also remember reading something that in a recent new book or whatever it references a Resistance battle near Batuu where a Star Destroyer was damaged. Obviously the events of RotR.
LucasFilm considers Galaxy's Edge to be Canon, part of the continuity.

That's fair. Seems silly to me on the part of Lucasfilm and, honestly, relatively minor. I don't think they'd be particularly hard line on that issue if tweaking aspects of the land are needed for guest satisfaction that would make it incompatible with canon.

That still strikes me as a different issue that having the setting be a specific timeframe though.

Potter is actually all over the place timeline wise and Universal has never given a specific answer. The only thing confirmed is that Gringotts is obviously during Deathly Hallows but that can’t be true of Diagon Alley because pretty much all the shops except for Weasley’s were destroyed in that timeframe when they were going for the Horcrux. Also, there’s no Ollivander’s in Hogsmeade in the stories. When designing the first land they just thought to heck with it this is something guests will want to experience in the land even though this isn’t in the stories.
Moreover, they did a great job making everything feel cohesive and like it belonged.

They should certainly have a Mandalorian walk around character and be working on a baby Yoda meet and greet. I’m shocked there is neither yet at this point. Disney needs to move faster to capitalize on these things.

They often ask for identification.

Excellent. I'll have my Tim Horton's loyalty card ready before I enter.

My last trip they took someone in custody. Still don't know what ultimately happens there. They get a special pin or something for playing along? I also saw that happen in the animation courtyard before SWGE was open.
