Star Wars Ep. 9 Thread

From the looks of it Disney seemed to treat the Fandom Menace as if it was a significant amount of Star Wars fans and tried to please them whilst pleasing everybody else. This is exactly what led to Disney initially firing James Gunn from GotG Vol. 3 after right-wing trolls ganged up on him, and it bodes ill for the studio and creatives if they continue to pander to these cretins.

No. They should’ve just not done TLJ the way that they did. None of the Fandom Menace like what they’ve read about the movie either from what I can tell. To me it seems this movie actually will unite the fan base but not for the right reasons. Now everyone will be disappointed. Great job, Disney. No wonder they preemptively announced Kevin Feige coming into Star Wars before crap hit the fan. All the rumors were true. They knew they had a cobbled together stinker on their hands. I bet Bobby boy is just ecstatic that The Mandalorian is well received though. I foresee big things for Favreau and Filoni because of that fact.

Lucas famously rewrote attack of the clones due to fan backlash over politics in the phantom movie...

It didn’t work.

Some - like Dave filoni - have a reverence for him still. I see the original movies succeeding in spite of him.

Kershner and kurtz overspent on empire because that’s what the story NEEDED. He still complains about it. But the proof was in the pudding. You get what you pay for...if the OT had been done on the cheap, he’s not a billionaire

Lucas isn’t perfect but he always had a solid story.
I just want to see what the treatments said and then judge after I read it.

Yes, Lucas made excellent choices hiring Kurtz and Kershner to get his story and vision on the screen.
Must have given Lucas a heart attack spending all his money on Empire to the point he had to get a loan. Empire fails and Lucas loses everything.
It didn’t...and it all worked out.

OTOH it bodes ill for anyone hoping for more diverse representation within the franchise out of fear of enraging the white bearded nerds, especially since it's now all but certain Kennedy will be gone by 2021-2.

This is a good one...

When they issued the orders to build the mos eisley sets...somebody forget to check Liam Neesons height...it’s about 6’2”...

So when they went to shoot...the lower walls of physical sets were too short. Why? Because all the “skies” were green screen...obviously since there was nonsense going on in them at all times.

He wanted it cut down to the inch to save money

Not quite accurate... His height it 6'4".. And it's not that they built them on the cheap too short, but the sets were being constructed prior him signing-on to the cast.. So, it wasn't a mistake on LFL's part.. They just had to rebuild to accommodate his stature.

Nah. The Mandalorian is plenty diverse and absolutely no one is batting an eye. No one bats an eye at the OT or PT for that either. Maybe, just maybe, the characters are just viewed as bad characters regardless of their race or gender.

Another funny note, the ST is all white male directors. The Mandalorian has episodes directed by women and, again, no problem.

I think it’s more that this is the story Abrams created when he did Force Awakens Treatments. Johnson didn’t have a plan or idea after Last Jedi, he was one and done with no direction for the future so Disney went back to Abrams. Abrams went straight back to his original notes, It’s why the movie feels like a sequel to force awakens and feels like it ignored Last Jedi.

People also say it feels like multiple movies badly stitched into one.

You wouldn't know that by going on Reddit or Twitter and seeing the fans make misogynistic/racist remarks about the characters.

That's sexist and racist. Way to paint with a broad brush. No females or minorities had any issues with the movies. They were all in agreement of their unanimous love for the Disney ST.

Wonder what other movie felt like that.....

Ok...he’s a runt compared to me...

But the point remains: why shave it to the bone? Why “fake skies” when they weren’t needed?

My favorite critic response:

That's a positive review? Yikes.

I will fully admit I don't entirely trust the critics after how they acted with The Last Jedi (I liked TFA, so that doesn't matter to me). That said, it's a two way street. The people who said critics are idiots, don't trust a word they said, can't turn around and justify what they think will be a bad movie with them. HOWEVER, you likewise can't say that critics loved TLJ so you fan boys are wrong, and then turnaround and say "Well you all hated the critics so it's good." Personally, I'm just laughing at the reviews at this point. I'll be very curious how fans seem to receiver this, and how the box office does. And I'll really judge for myself at some point when I've got some time (just isn't something I'm making time for at this point, sorry).
Wise choice!

No...I concede your point...

It’s just that he had some screwball ideas that went unchecked when he had too much power as well

There’s a famous clip of rick McCallum in the kitchen at Skywalker ranch going on and on after the first screening of phantom menace about all the things that didn’t work.

Even for a yes man like him...you could tell he had an exasperated “we told him so” tone and mannerisms too it.

I agree there...he was bonkers and tried to engineer the sale of LFL where he could make the movies with Disney money - according to Iger and Disney’s lead counsel...

The problem...still...is that they need a talented exec that is creative and loves Star Wars as a FAN!!!

that wasn’t Lucas...that sure as hell isn’t abrams and his love of the Hollywood money Machine and his quest to be spielberg 2....

And it is not Kathy Kennedy...who was and apparently is a taskmaster/paper pusher.

The fact Disney is floating bringing in feige tells you all you need to know.

They need a new studio head...and for their own future dollars it needs to be off their “preapproved” grid.

By the way...anyone else find creepy spielberg went to the premiere and Lucas didn’t?

I mean...anti-social billionaire recluses probably have a lot to do, no?

To her credit, Kennedy produced some of the best blockbusters in Hollywood. I think she trusted the wrong creatives with SW, but I don’t expect a film producer to handle the screenplay, direction, etc.

She shouldn’t have been put in charge of Lucasfilm. That’s the problem with the way Bob “Buy My Book” Iger is running the company in his final years: ask money people to head creative departments. He did the same thing with Chapek.

That’s why I’m so interested in how this pans out.
