Star Wars Ep. 9 Thread

Once again, we're mostly in agreement, @Sirwalterraleigh. While there were some other factors working against Solo that contributed to its box office failure there is no denying that TLJ backlash likely played a significant part in it.

So (other than salvaging what they can with TROS) we look toward the future. The real question to me is how they're proceeding with the next trilogy considering the backlash Benioff and Weiss are getting for Game of Thrones. I've never watched GOT and don't seek out GOT discussion online, but the backlash seems even louder than TLJ. It has spilled into all corners of both my social life and my frequented sites online. If I were Iger or Kennedy I'd have some serious doubts in the decision to partner with Benioff and Weiss right now.

It’s worse than that...

Iger is “shelving” movies past his retirement. That has a 0.0% chance of being a coincidence.

Reportedly they could find NO ONE to replace Kennedy...that’s a really bad sign.

They’re tied to Rian Johnson still publicly...that makes them look competent.

And Weiss and Benioff have recently been hit with a bad label: being given completely developed characters that were loved and near completely failing to close them out to the fans satisfaction.

Somebody....please post a box office chart or something that negates all these things...or I might worry

Personally I’m very excited for The Mandalorian. It looks incredible.

I actually think Star Wars is now better served by serials.

They can’t figure out how to do a story and a character on film in the current Disney political climate (I hate to make it that...but they neither could rectify the old actors nor pull off good characters that were fairly obviously “slotted” for marketing purposes...the Chinese just don’t like Star Wars...and little boys liking it is still as useful and little girls)...so tv shows work.

I’m ok with no new movies...an amazing but true statement.

You can do great characters and storylines on tv...
And as we’ve scene tv shows can be shot just as movies in scale now.

“Make it so”

Funnily enough. Lucas was working on a live action Star Wars tv series for years before the Disney deal. He reportedly had something like 50 episodes already written. I believe it was called Star Wars: Underworld. Its possible The Mandalorian may have taken inspiration from Lucas's scripts.

Well we know he went to tv when he outran his own special effects capabilities. Young Indy

Apparently we haven't run off all the Defenders yet who will blindly love anything with the Star Wars logo slapped onto it. A few roaches scattered among us. Where is @Sirwalterraleigh and @Anders Limpar ? Mike and I need your help.

Proof that you are not secure with your stance is the need to marginalize any disagreement through insults. Maybe if you made coherent fact based arguments more people would respond. I suspect you can't or won't do so.

The BoD will not shelf cinematic Star Wars. Any decent rendition is guaranteed to make 1.5 Billion BO even with modest returns in some countries. Disney+ can't do that yet.

Umm....the only truly “decent” rendition Disney has made did not make $1.5

Two others didn’t...also

So where are you going with this one?

It's obvious to me that LFL is not making SW films for my generation anymore. Rogue One being the outlier, IMO. I've watched RO multiple times. TLJ, once.
The "Let the past die" line was meant for people like me. I hear you loud and clear, Disney LFL. You're doing a great job of "letting go".
I'm not really excited for TROS at the moment. I just don't care right now. That could change, but I doubt it. I'm going to see it for sure but I have this feeling that I will probably watch the Ep 9 credits roll with disappointment.
And I agree that The Mandalorian appears on the surface like it might be good, but with Disney's current track record on SW, I'll take the wait-and-see approach.

I’m not gonna see it...I would reserve the right to change that, but you have to decide and stIck by your “vote”

The worst thing that could happen is a bloated box office in this weird jj abrams clusterlove world that rewards ANOTHER bland movie. The trailer looks to be a mess of nonesense. More tie fighters in the dessert trying to run people down 🙄

And apparently there are at least two NEW unmemorable planets completely made up that the audience will be given eye candy to watch action sequences on.

The last two movies did such a good job of that I have no clue what their names are.

Funny how Endor and Hoth stuck to the ribs though

Your right, TFA made 2 Billion.

I don't think you can use TFA at all (or Last Jedi for that matter). You aren't going to have the nostalgia/fan service going forward. I'd say they are probably looking at hopes closer to what Rogue One brought in. I don't disagree that they won't keep movies going for a billion dollars a film, but I think $1.5 is very hopeful (at least until they show they can put together meaningful stories that can link together).

I hear ya. My family only goes to the movies maybe 3 or 4 times a year so we are selective on what we spend our money on. For TROS, I have saved movie gift cards for it so technically I will not be spending my money.
There's a sense of obligation on my part to see it. To finish my 42 year investment. I want to see how this ends, good or bad.

Honestly I will probably see it (whether in theaters or Red Box). I REALLY doubt I go opening weekend, and I can promise it's not going to be opening night like Endgame. The issue they have with me right now is after how duped I felt with what the Last Jedi trailer showed compared to what was in the movie (again, not even that I hated the movie, but the trailer made things looks so different), no trailer is going to get me super pumped.

if they can't figure out the simple formula then the board should insist on major changes. I am very confident they (Lucasfilm) have already learned from recent mistakes. We will know in December.

Don't give the doomsayers too much attention. Their track record is extremely weak.

Same boat...

I always spend for first showings/imax/Dolby cinema etc
Multiple times

Nope...at a minimum I will wait till there is full disclosure of it and whether it’s an actual good movie

I have no interest in mediocre. None

20 years and 4 days of that...or worse

If the formula was that simple every company would put out $1.5 billion films. I think the Star Wars love has to do with the original characters as much as the story lines. But I agree with your last statement, a lot of my thoughts on where they can go will hinge on this last movie. If it is under Last Jedi, there are REAL problems going on with the fan base.

For the life of me I’ll never understand how we went from “Chewie, we’re home” to “Let the past die” so damn quickly. That first line had me so hyped I was almost choking up when I first saw it.

Listen...I totally get from a management standpoint that they needed to move away from the original trilogy.

But they forced it and that is a huge mistake.

So there’s a billion or so fans of the originals...and many waited for decades to live in that moment. Nostalgia is a huge part of any fan base. It is. And that won’t change.

So it was a delicate task...handled with meat hooks. Ford obviously wanted paid off...so he strong armed them to it. Hamill was completely rewritten to his public protest. And fisher just wasn’t up for it...as evidenced by the toxicology report.

It’s on Kennedy and Iger - for me. If you didn’t understand Star Wars - which they clearly don’t - you tread incredibly softly. They just don’t get it. Likely never will. The fans pay the price...and then they make the stockholders pay.
