The full video, story and photo gallery is available at Vanity Fair. Some great photos and good little nuggets of info.

An emotional track works best when you’re emotionally invested in the characters as well.

Why are you so active in the Episode IX thread if you’re not emotionally invested in its main characters?

Like, we get it. You don’t like the sequels. But what do you gain by seeking out opportunity to just be negative?

Kathleen Kennedy provides an update on the Star Wars story spin-offs. Reading between the lines. Sounds like they're being diverted to Disney+.

I think that Disney is very respectful of what this is, and right from the beginning we talked about the fragility of this form of storytelling. Because it’s something that means so much to fans that you can’t turn this into some kind of factory approach. You can’t even do what Marvel does, necessarily, where you pick characters and build new franchises around those characters. This needs to evolve differently.

Apparently we haven't run off all the Defenders yet who will blindly love anything with the Star Wars logo slapped onto it. A few roaches scattered among us. Where is @Sirwalterraleigh and @Anders Limpar ? Mike and I need your help.

LOL. Listen Captain Obvious, I know this is a the internet so it may be hard to believe, but not everybody is an extremist. I'm pretty lukewarm on TLJ and think there were a lot of missed opportunities in that film. I just didn't make a choice to write off one of my favorite franchises due to a few missteps, especially when the franchise has survived plenty of missteps before. And on top of that, I don't make an effort to belittle or diminish others' enjoyment of the films - because that accomplishes absolutely nothing and it's just plain not nice.

So no need to call up your big bad boys to exterminate the "roaches" who happened to like a movie that you didn't. You're not going to change those people's minds. So you can waste your keystrokes here or you can go do something more productive with your time on the world wide web.

Sure, TLJ may have missed the mark. But the films aren't what's wrong with Star Wars today. It's the "fans" with sentiments and posts like yours.

Because it ruined characters I was invested in. I’m still going to see this movie out of sheer curiosity. Likely opening weekend in IMAX like the others because after all, I’m still a Star Wars fan. Also they haven’t ruined Chewbacca (yet).
Is this from IX? I hope they didn't spoil the final battle.
We all knew it was coming. It’s very predictable. Only surprise they can do is if Rey and Kylo switch sides.

Give it a rest. Your type is greatly outnumbered here.

Because he loves Star Wars but these movies are boring or outright blow...

And maybe - just maybe - rejection of inferior product may force action by the makers. That has been the goal since 1999...it’s out of love, not hate.

But emotions are powerful and sometimes you cross the streams.

This and all things. A consumer/fan needs to be their own advocates. What I call “responsible consumerism”

I’ll give an illustration.

We are Disney fans...so if the one day price went from $125 a day to $175 tomorrow...what do you do?

...you don’t buy and question why? Hold out for (ghast😱) a couple of months. Go to New York or Chicago or something...

You DONT say “yay! More magic for me! It’s totally worth it!!!”

NOOOOOOO.

It’s really a cocktail of common sense and maturity. Defend what you should defend. Including Star Wars

Looking back they did seem to be teasing that in TLJ with Rey being drawn to the dark side. I think you might be right. I wonder if there will be some twist where for the first time in Jedi history they misread the prophecy of who is light and dark. Rey is actually a puppet of the darkside and Ben is on the lightside. While Snoke was messing with everyone minds trying to point them in the wrong direction. It will turn out that Rey is some descendant of Palpatine created by the force. Which unofficially makes her a skywalker while still being a nobody. Kylo gets jelous because of everything he did for Snoke and the dark side and cant accept the light. Which in turn puts the force out of balance. Just a ridiculous fan theory of course lol.

I get your gist...I can’t say that I disagree with much of it.

It’s the bad management that is apparent now. And Iger is punting on it. He is playing out his string.

But Star Wars is very much a diminished franchise...and that is something to be corrected with good management and creative talent. Lucasfilm doesn’t have it. Time to sweep the decks.

Watch abrams try to sell this nonsense on GMA this morning. He couldn’t sell it...the abc anchors couldn’t even feign excitement. The truth is out there and we don’t need mulder.

This isn’t 1% of angry fans. Open your eyes.

But I get your stance and respect it. Totally. No extermination needed. Except that last paragraph is crap...and the defense of those that were in a comma for a minimum December 2017-present. The bar needs to be higher.

The only "type" I am here is one that is trying to discourage ridiculing or witch hunting those who are simply enjoying a movie. Everybody is entitled to their opinions, but seeking out to belittle others with differing opinion about something as trivial as a movie isn't cool. It's immature.

I dig these posts for being level headed discussion that doesn't resort to name calling or schoolyard insults. You make some great points, and I pretty much agree with you on everything too.

I totally get behind the idea of putting your money where your mouth is when it comes to products like this. But complaining on a message board is not going to get the message across to Disney/Lucasfilm. Not buying a ticket to see TROS is putting your money where your mouth is.

I also support the idea of a creative and management shakeup at Lucasfilm. There's definitely a lack of overall creative vision and attunement to the audience that studios like Marvel and Pixar have. It's abundantly clear in the comparison to Marvel.

Once again, I'm not against those who didn't like TLJ - I've got plenty about TLJ that I dislike. I'm against a witch hunt aimed at people with a different opinion. It's just a waste of time.

All fair.

But this is where we have to read the tea leaves...

The people already HAVE Voted with their wallet. It was solo...and last Jedi after Christmas 2017.

The public HAS spoken. So change is needed and none has happened.

The biggest “hater” was Colin treverrow....who like Gary Kurtz and many on the prequels will finger when it failed in public. It is coming.

Disney’s excuses on Star Wars is the dumbest one I’ve ever seen them float (full disclosure I worked in an executive department of a certain entertainment complex...a long time ago in a backwards county far, far away).

Franchise fatigue? No franchise has ever had more anticipation on the whole...never. There’s a race for second place. Any decent Star Wars would fly off the shelves and screen.

But just on math....marvels released I believe 6 movies between November of 17 and today that are gonna gross about $10,000,000,000 worldwide and 35% or so of that domestic....

Franchise fatigue does not exist in the modern Hollywood/streaming world.
Bad movie backlash is easier to find than ever, however.

Once again, we're mostly in agreement, @Sirwalterraleigh. While there were some other factors working against Solo that contributed to its box office failure there is no denying that TLJ backlash likely played a significant part in it.

So (other than salvaging what they can with TROS) we look toward the future. The real question to me is how they're proceeding with the next trilogy considering the backlash Benioff and Weiss are getting for Game of Thrones. I've never watched GOT and don't seek out GOT discussion online, but the backlash seems even louder than TLJ. It has spilled into all corners of both my social life and my frequented sites online. If I were Iger or Kennedy I'd have some serious doubts in the decision to partner with Benioff and Weiss right now.
