This rumor has been kicking around for a while. It does seem to be quite an oppertune time for a rehab of this nature, but (pardon my reservation) I'll fully believe it when I see the rehab walls up. I'd really love to see it get some TLC, though.

Totally agree. Let's wait for the wall to go up before I get excite.

About the prequels. George Lucas knew perfectly well that there would be a lot of people hating them and he expects the same with Episode 3.

I however, liked Episode 2 and I thought that one was great.

But if any upgrade were to happen to Star Tours, I would want to see the simulators replaced with centerfuges.

It may not happen, but I am glad the rumor is floating around again. Usually these old rumors surface everyonce in awhile, but I havent seen anything about Star Tours is quite awhile. I was afraid that the idea was completely dead. So, while it isn't really "news" it is still good to hear for someone who is hoping for some change.

That ride needs to go. I know it's old and that's the excuse, but even compared with the technology on Space Mountain, it seems dated.

My girlfriend refers to it as the "vomit comet". :hurl: Motion simulator rides of that nature are yesterday's news. The entire attraction needs to be gutted in favor of something else.

I do agree, not much has been done with MGM in a while. In fact, I've never seen a park with more wasted space. They should gut NY Street as well, and put something, ANYTHING in that area.

Hey - At least that line the castmembers use before closing the doors it still original: "May the force be with you, cuz I won't be." :lookaroun

It was built, what 17 years after SM ... thats a plain stupid statement.

Agreed. I'm curious, with movie and TV production down to almost nil (or completely nil) do they still need the soundstages and the behind the scenes warehouses and bungalows that would have housed production companies and their construction projects? If not, then that's a lot more wasted space waiting to be used. There must have been a lot of infrastructure for productions that isn't used much anymore.

I agree with joviacdan that it is now outdated and needs to be rethought. They could do so much more with the idea using today's technology. At least do something to draw fresh attention to it and make people want to ride it again.

I don't want them to change it so that it's based on the new movies. I was never that impressed with them, and I enjoyed the originals more. I'd be dissapointed if they based it on those. I was actually hoping that they made it so that you end up on Hoth and then you're in that battle with the walkers. That'd be cool.

Thank you very much for the insult, but that was my point exactly.

Space Mountain, a much older attraction, SEEMS more technically advanced then Star Tours.

What's the point in doing that? NY street is a great piece of theming, and is home to the OFSOL.

There's nothing to see there except cardboard cutouts and a couple of stores in the street.

What is OFSOL?

I wouldn't hold my breath on this one happening anytime soon. I wish they woudl just gut the entire building and put something actually worthwhile! The ride is so stuck in the 80's and it causes whiplash! Sorry but I skip this one everytime.....

I agree...if they ever get around to doing that (which I doubt) I wonder what the video will be...

Whatever they do, Star Tours needs some TLC...its outdated...

(when the contract with LucasFilm expires what will happen to the attraction(s) if the contract isn't renewed?)

As I said in my past post on The Living Seas, my contact who works with the WDW Marketing Development and Research team told me that a rehab to Star Tours was highly likely within the next three years, due to the fact that:
1. Revenge of the Sith is going to come out this year.
2. Lucasfilm and Disney's contract is going to expire soon.
3. MGM has not gotten much done since Rock N' Roller Coaster (Excluding the upcoming Lights Motor Action Stunt Show)
4. MGM has been having a decreased attendence record for a while now, like AK.
5. The AT-AT seems to be going through a rehab, along with the hinting of new travel destinations on the message board inside the entry queue.

Sounds more like idle speculation based on observations. I'll believe it when I see it :)

3 years isn't really that soon.

Just curious, what about Energizer's sponsership contract, how long does that last?

Also, I know that ST needs some TLC but beyond that does the ride really need to be gutted and redone? It seems like it draws good number and is based on a strong storyline.(It is by no means though in the same terrible shape that Body Wars is in) Even though the ride system is old and out of date (much like Space Mtn) it is still a magnet for that area of the park.

And not that I want to get into the entire SW which trillogy is better than the others. The characters and "mood" of the Episodes 4,5,6 seemed more in line with the Disney Enviornment than the episodes 1,2 and upcomming 3. The only differnce in terms of updating the movie would be replacing the models in the film with CGI.

It wouldn't surprise me if ST was gone in three years. I'm not saying it's a definite possibility, but consider the following:

- Lucas and Disney have argued over ST for several years (if rumors are true). If a update is to be done, Lucas wants a lot of control over what happens. Disney doesn't want to turn over too much control to Lucas. So, major hurdle.

- Considering the above point, and considering Episode III is his last Star Wars film (so he says now), he may not care about ST in another year or so. Especially with the contract running out, he could try and use this as a major bargaining point. Think this couldn't happen? Let's not forget Disney and Pixar.

I would love to see a really decent update for ST. But, you never know.
