I love that they didn't waste any time building Ahsoka and she appeared two minutes in. Loved the episode. Only thing I noticed is Ahsoka's headdress is a little shorter here but other than that no problem with Rosario's portrayal. Even if they used Rosario's voice, it didn't ruin it. She killed it.

Many people are excited to have Ahsoka appear but for me, the fact we could have Thrawn appear in a live action Star Wars series is amazing.

Remember, the Star Wars franchise was pretty much dormant until Timothy Zahn came along, reignited the spark with his classic trilogy and a villain that was formidable and memorable, without being a rehash.

Those books helped bring Star Wars back and to have Thrawn here and now is a testament to their quality and importance. They really could re-release them with some tweaks to bring them into canon.

What’s funny is that when I first saw the zahn book sitting on the shelf (it was at a Revco (now Cvs) pharmacy in the pre-internet as I was a much younger padawan) I was delighted. Still remember it. When I read the books (year publication gaps in between)...I was actually very critical of them...thought they leaned on references in the text to the movies a bit too much.

But as you said - Star Wars exploded from that point...toys roared back circa 94-95...the convention and collector networks exploded and then Lucas came back into the public eye in a huge way.

But those 3 books...though still a tad too into nostalgia...would be absolutely relished if made for the movies now. Absolutely. I’ll even volunteer to play Captain Palleon...and sign me up for the attack on the shipyards...which is exactly what rogue one reminded me of and why it’s really the only gem of the group as things stands.

It’s amazing how time changes things. 30 years.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm they should have given Jon and Dave creative control over the future direction of Star Wars. The sequels really suffered from not having a single creative vision guiding them.

I am willing to accept that people didn’t peg Jon F for this role at the time. He has done a lot in these last 10+ years since to further his cred for this... but when one sees what they have done here, and how, and why... it is the perfect resume. And KK needs to accept their manipulative approach to the franchise has not done what they had hoped. Hopefully she and Iger can be the bigger people and accept their path did not do as they thought it would... and capitalize on what is working.

I know its inhouse... but the gallery series should sell anyone on their approach and credits to be in that chair. And their output here has been beyond words.

The last two episodes have had me the most star wars giddy since the OT was re released to theatres.

I think too much fan service will be the downfall of the series.

:)

Ok.. lets compare how fioni does it vs disney.

Disney basically plagiarizes the OT into new sequel plots.... and beats “fan service” into us by making new characters repeat lines from completely different characters. It’s about as subtle as a pink caddilac

Where as these guys do it the old fashioned way... references... hints... tying back to known things. There are tons of references that are simply there if you know them... rather than force fed to you as if it’s supposed to be the main meal.

The fan service in the sequels was cringe worthy... repeatedly. I mean, make you groan out loud bad in their “fan service”. Like a bad Chinese knockoff. These guys know how to do it so much better.

The guy watching the razors crest come into the planet in this episode was a good example of the nod to the past... without it being so contrite you are just wishing it never happened. Like disney’s abuse of “i got a bad feeling...”

If Ahsoka is looking for Grand Admiral Thrawn then she hasn't found Ezra yet. It's either Ezra or Luke who is gonna be the jedi appearing.

I was thinking Ezra there are more possibilities for his character being a padawan, sort of like how Kanan was when they met in Rebels. Seeing Luke Skywalker again would be great but I suspect it might be too divisive for Disney to do at the moment (recasting or using deaging tech) and if they did it would be signposted way in advance to get people to sign up.

You could also get a sith / dark side user turn up though maybe ventress survived the clone wars or a new devious character who will try and turn grogu to the dark side

If the fan service is done correctly, isn’t it kind of an insult to refer it to as fan service?
No. I've said before, there is nothing wrong with fan service. It shouldn't be a negative term. Like anything, it is how well it is done that matters. The reason it is considered negative, is more often than not it has been done poorly. I would argue that fan service is one of the most important things in a franchise like star wars. Hamburgers shouldn't be considered a bad food because of McDonald's. I get why it's considered negative, because we've seen more bad than good. But the Mandalorian shows it is not only positive, but necessary.

Keeping your most loyal customers happy will be a downfall? Sure.

As we all know it’s much better when you constantly lose butts in seats over the course of a trilogy and merch sales nose dive. That’s how a successful entertainment business is run 😉

I want to read these books now.

You are probably right, the most loyal fans will be the ones satisfied.

For me, last nights episode wasn't that great. My guy, who is a super fan, had to keep explaining to me why she was important, her back story which played into why she didn't want to train him, who the other guy mentioned was...then he kept getting calls from friends who needed explanations! 😄

Its getting harder for the casual fan to follow, in my opinion at least.

No worries, I will just stop watching if I get bored.

Talking with my brother we’ve been going over in our heads how they could update Star Tours to take place during The Mandalorian. Once again we can have random scenes all designed to be during this time period and again we’re supposed to have a different pilot but circumstances force Mando and Grogu to commandeer our Starspeeder to escape the Empire remnants that still have presence within Star Tours. Maybe he doesn’t even realize he’s taking a vehicle with passengers already inside.

I have never watched Clone Wars or Rebels completely but I could follow along with the story and characters even with a lack of in depth knowledge. When I don't understand and need more details, I research. Google is accessible. People just want to be spoonfed all the time.

I dont want to do research before or after I watch a show. Spoonfed? Sure, I guess.

I just happened to find last nights harder to follow. Like I didn't understand why she couldn't take him on to train. (Or wouldn't)

I'm allowed not to like an episode that much and was just giving my point of view. :)

Strong feelings and attachment being the downfall of a Jedi have been present as themes since Empire Strikes Back and was a huge focus in the prequels.

It's as much fanservice as having X Wings or blasters in a Star Wars property.

I'm glad I'm in the small minority when I say this episode while full of awesome characters and plot advancements wasn't very well shot i thought. Felt kinda B-rated. The acting and dialogue was sub par, the shot angles and flow seemed off. Then when I saw that Filoni had directed it, I was floored cause I thought he would have done better. Overall heres to hoping Luke Skywalker returns

Filoni did direct the worst episode (in my opinion) on season 1 after all, but he did redeem himself.

for the most part, i didn’t have any issues of dawson’s take on ashoka. i like the character in general, but went in there thinking she’ll be portrayed & played differently than we’ve seen her in the clone wars.
