i’ll say the obvious. the force was not strong with this show. if skeleton crew flops, they should just stick with the mandalorian. just my opinion.

That's endemic to Disney+ but Star Wars is the worse of it. I don't think it is a coincidence that the first 2 seasons of The Mandalorian - which were well regarded - were very episodic despite a season long arc.

Unfortunately I think Mando was done that way more creatively than business wise.. built a bit more like the old western TV shows. A weird kinda hybird where there is still one series story arc... but each episode is not really dedicated to advancing that story... instead with all these side adventures that play out more like a series episode that is more self-contained.

Classically a TV series was 13 or 24ish episodes. But I guess since this content was never intended for syndication plus the idea that these shows would be more tests... they went with this mini-serial format of 6-8 episodes. And that has seemed to stick with all of the original D+ content. I think what started as a 'test the waters...' thing has become the norm.. and I think it sucks.

The only remaining question is what is Disney going to draw from the results of this show.

As was noted in the two threads about the topic, there are multiple antagonistic fandoms to SW and I argue even sub groups within each faction. Even accounting for review bombing or the potential for it enough of the fans base did not like this show. It seemed very much like TLJ. Those who liked it very much went out of their way to prop the show up to counter the negative reaction to it.

The reasons why are there for Disney to take stock of. Likely they are doubling down.

For my own part the non-sensical plot and the over-hyping did it for me. “The best lightsaber battle since PM!” Well from what could be seen through all the branches in the forest and modern trend of barely lighting the set?

Not so much. YMMV.

I’d rather the new leader be John Knoll.
He is even a good storyteller though? I mean he has the visual effects side of things down leading ILM, but I would think we'd want someone heading up Lucas who was a good storyteller. And Knoll isn't someone that strikes me as a storyteller in the traditional sense within Hollywood.

Well, it can’t be Filoni either since he’s more a story guy and not someone who is business and I’d rather he and Favreau finish up the storyline of the Mandoverse before 1 of them decides they wanna lead Lucasfilm.

I honestly think the decision has already been made, just not official yet, based on how Filoni was the one presenting for Lucas at D23 instead of Kennedy or anyone else.

And then they'll bring in this mythical person that will make consistently great Star Wars stuff that everybody loves!

Something even George Lucas couldn't do, but I digress...
So support crap and be cutesy sarcastic about it?

Keep on keeping on…it’s working so well the franchise will be dead and go into a 15 year hiatus soon. 👍🏻

The sad thing to me is that I thought the show was decent enough until the finale when the inexplicably made Sol a villain?! I’m still not sure exactly who we were supposed to be rooting for in the series. The sensible people died, the annoying people lived and the main character who we seemed to be supposed to identify with killed a person who had her back her whole life.

I’m just wondering exactly was the pitch for this show that got it approved.

Did you ever read those puff-piece interviews the writer would give explaining what she was intending after each episode?

How she explained what was going on made zero sense in logic, morality or within what happened in the show.

I assume that the pitch that made Kathleen cry was all about an emotion story of sisters that didn't actually happen in the show.

It is still shocking how badly they handle Star Wars.

i’ll say the obvious. the force was not strong with this show. if skeleton crew flops, they should just stick with the mandalorian. just my opinion.

They have kind of stuffed themselves. Skeleton Crew doesn't look bad, but it doesn't at all seem Star Wars. The Acolyte seemed Star Wars but was Star Wars done bad by people who don't understand good vs evil. I can only use myself and other Star Wars fans I know, but it's not a show we'd watch if it wasn't Star Wars. So will we watch it just because it is?

It's not made for us. I watched the first episode of Ms Marvel, it was fine but not a show for me. How much do these shows aimed at younger people, not for the main fan base bring in new fans?

The new Alien film wasn't great, but it's probably a good vehicle at bringing new people into the franchise. It's still an Alien film. Why would Goonies in space make people Star Wars fans?

I think it remains to be seen whether Filoni will be good or not as he hasn't been in charge very long. So I say at least wait until his first movie releases.
He’s a bit too loyal to George and the EU…and doesn’t profile to have the chops to lead the business end in Hollywood.

Just how it seems

Good as a creative guy to work on some things though

The head of ILM…more or less

Wrote rogue 1

He and his brother invented adobe photoshop when they were horribly young

Was one of the visual effects supervisors on the prequels

Basically…a highly intelligent guy who displays way more common sense than most genius types

Which means Disney would hate him as Lucas head…because he wouldn’t do dumb things for politics and try to pass it off as the hack filmmakers “get it” and are “big fans”

They drove off a lot of the Mandalorian fans last season also… at this point I’m curious what it’ll take for Disney to put someone else in charge of Star Wars because viewership has been going lower and lower with each series.

I think he’s brilliant. But his only “story“ credit is for Rogue One. Which I loved, but was famously retooled throughout production.
Again, brilliant guy. But there are at least a half-dozen others who have more narrative storytelling experience (Filoni, Favreau, a host of the directors for Mando series) that would be more suited to this.

Hubris

Will never admit they do anything wrong

Star Wars was the quintessential modern pop culture franchise…it really solidified the blockbuster concept along with marketing tie ins. The ultimate NATO era property. There is nothing like it.

Disney believes it can overpower anything. George thought so too…but to a lesser extent.

Star Wars fandom is a 2,000 lb bull with an attitude problem…they both found out if you mess with it…you’ll get the horns.

Daisy Ridley is cool and all though. She needs the work 🙄

He’s more appropriate than filoni in some ways…less in others

Doesn’t matter…Iger has to go…then Kennedy.

Nothing changes until those happen. The die is cast
