They're like anyone else. They all wanted big hits and they'd record anything if they thought it would sell. Here's Cab Calloway and Al Jolson in blackface:

It was just a matter of giving the audience what they wanted. White privilege is powerful.

Cab Calloway was Black.
Nvm, I see what you said. Should’ve separated with a comma.

This. They found a Chinese heroine from a Chinese legend, they got Pocahontas from the actual Native American history, Moana was based upon Polynesian myths. There are plenty of Caucasian princesses from the European fairytales. And when they came out with Tiana? Were there any heroines from African stories in existence at the time? I bet there were, but Disney couldn’t be bothered to use them. Why? They took the easy way out, played it safe, and inserted an African-American into a European story and people said, “Hurrah, Disney, wow, you’re so diverse!” I don’t think that’s fair and they need to consider African cultural stories more and look for those heroines.

Would that have been acceptable? It isn't hard to find people criticizing all of the above.

Who knows? We can’t say because they didn’t take the risk. I’d rather have seen the risk taken though. The Princess and the Frog wasn’t deemed acceptable by all either.

Moana, which is imo the best Disney “princess” story they’ve ever done, was criticized for being culturally insensitive by some.

There is literally nothing that can ever be done to satisfy every single person who is looking for something to be critical about.

You are right, in that you will never please everyone. There will always be a group who thinks more could be done. It’s just inevitable. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t hear them out, or try and do better as we learn and grow.

But in the end, Moana is definitely one of the ones they got mostly right.

This goes back to asking for and doing the right thing, from both consumer and company.

Disney casts a black girl as Ariel. Social media was then aflame with #blackgirlmagic and people thrilled that a black girl is playing a traditionally white mermaid. How lazy is that? How would anyone expect better than to slap Tiana on Splash, when Disney knows that cheers will result, from the same crowd.

Tiana’s story is problematic outside of race.. but no one cares.. because, Disney is (re) theming a ride to her! Look how socially conscious they are! I’m going to Disney World Now!

How about a legit black princess with some type of deeper story than turning into a frog? How about an attraction to celebrate such a film? This is what people should want, but, they’re fine with the lazy way instead.. Bonus- they get to claim everyone else is racist and asleep for not realizing the racism in the sights and songs on Splash Mountain itself.
