The company line is that guests wanted a more "family friendly" environment. Total BS. I tend to believe that money had a lot more to do with it. TDO felt they could make more by leasing out the space to 3rd party vendors. I think there is something also to the notion that some less desirable elements of a "family friendly" environment tended to frequent the place...and not just gangs and criminals. Ultimately I think economics played the biggest role.
Money played a role as they took the turnstiles down in an attempt to grow street sales. They were looking to increase their margins and that backfired horribly.
But yes, looking to outsource became en vogue once they decided to try and copy city walk rather than being content with their existing profits.
