Onsite resort stays are highly profitable. The margins for WDW rooms are obscene. The fact that Disney is willing to offer "Free Dining" to those staying onsite gives you some idea of how profitable these rooms are.

And some profit is better than no profit, which is what will happen if Disney doesn't offer "Free Dining" for September to December.

It probably only costs Disney $20-30 a night to turn over a room. Maybe less. There is huge obscene profit in hotels.

Not to mention that more heads in the beds means more people that are buying $30 Chinese T-shirts and Vinylmations. Yes... Full hotels make a huge difference, even at a huge discount.

And giving away food is the best way to make your numbers soar?
I was thinking about spending a few days there the first week in December. When I saw that I thought, well maybe it will be worth my while to wait another week or so and get the free dining. Then I remembered that I don't stay onsite, so there would be no need for it. Talk about your senior moments. :D Anyway, senior or not, all that it would have done, attendance wise, would be to take it away from the first week and transfer it to another. I don't think that people will go to Disney, during the holiday season, just because Disney is offering a Free meal or two (which we all know isn't really free anyway, but that's for another thread.) if they weren't planning on going anyway.

Spirited Tuesday Musings:

Why is it I have a sudden urge to head up to the End Zone Food Court at the and 'steal' Coke from now until July 28th?

You know all those visitors who are staying away from WDW? I think I've found most of them. They're at my mall.

At the risk of being labeled a flip-flopping Spirit, I am again having some doubts about the Kong returning to UNI rumours. I'd really like it if someone showed me some real proof.

Don't forget, Emmy noms come out Thursday morning.

But first, let's all wish DL a Happy 58th B-Day. Walt truly had no idea what we was starting back in the orange groves of sleepy Anaheim.

Anyone see casino gaming in Florida's future? Beyond the Indian enterprises that are hugely successful.

Seriously, don't give me a dirty look if I make it obvious I want to get away from your sick child in public. You may have signed up for a bout of semi-serious illness once every 4.3 weeks, but I did not.

I admit it, I'm bored with the Twitverse.

Can't believe my first post was so ... So pedestrian.

Don't be surprised to see discounting get turned up for fall and winter. Folks in Europe are already getting deals for next spring. Yep, TDO is very secure in its product.

Back to DL for a sec, there's some video that is traveling through social networking showing the park around 1956 and it is worth seeing.

Who knew that the worlds of fiction in 24 and Person of Interest weren't so out there?

Bet y'all wish you had taken more napkins to eBay.

Actually, when you brought up Disney's lobbyists up in Tallahassee, I was going to ask how those Miami Beach casinos are coming along since Disney and the Indian tribes want to nix them.

I'm pretty impressed with myself for visiting 6 out of your 10 (DL, DCA, BGW, EPCOT, IOA, DAK). I haven't been to DCA since its refurbishment, so I'd put last out of those 6. Additionally, I'd probably have IOA in front of EPCOT and BGW. Thanks for the response!

It honestly depends on the day and where I am. My Top 10 sorta ebbs and flows, but it hasn't really changed until I went to BGW. UNI-FL is right up there. BGT is in top 15 after one visit since the mid-80s. I'd likely have MK in there too, more for nostalgia than current quality.

The ones that come to mind immediately are a roller coaster version of Countdown to Extinction, Little Mermaid dark ride, and a Pirate land with a Pirates of the Caribbean/Splash Mountain hybrid type ride.

I'd rather play what new attractions do we know about for Shanghai

No, the PotC expansion was massive and the work of ex-Imagineer Tim Delaney. He was fired when Disney decided it didn't want to pay for it and the SAR wasn't willing to put in a penny.

Me too.

The site plan gives a pretty solid idea, despite its blurriness. I could give a rundown on what it shows, if it isn't already known. But what interests me is what has been tweaked, deleted, added, in the past year or so. Will the Downtown Disney area be period themed (e.g., 1930s) or modern "entertainment architecture" like Anaheim's? What is the theme of the luxury hotel (going with Mictorian again)?

The high end SDL hotel will again be a Grand Flo rip. I am very tired of that, although I do want to stay at the HKDL Hotel sometime.

MY respect for you is increased that you respect Disney is still a leader in the industry...i dunno if it is good that two WDW parks made it into top 10 or sad two didnt

Disney is still the undisputed industry leader, but that is based on market share, history and international product largely.

Disney, at least in Florida, isn't a trailblazer and hasn't been in a long time ...soon, they'll be an also ran by anyone measuring the products fairly.

Wait I thought @WDW1974 said this would be the park that would have a Marvel presence. Is that not the case anymore?

I also remember various insiders claiming this would be a radical departure from the older Disneyland designs and be more modern but from what I'm seeing and the descriptions it sounds to me like a more fleshed out version of Hong Kong Disneyland. It's no Euro Disneyland or Tokyo disney sea that's for sure.

No. It was talked about in blue sky, but Disney and its Chinese 'partners' felt that they didn't fit. So, they're going go HKDL.

SDL will be a MK like no other. It will feel a lot different and it will have some unique bells and whistles when it opens.
