For now... Soon UNI will want the entire vacation.
I don't know. They may realize that there are greater, maybe less tangible, benefits to playing along. They donlt have the benefit of being outside of the local planning system, so playing nice would benefit the Resort's ability to move forward with changes and additions. They could be a good neighbor where Disney has been viewed as a not so great neighbor since they starting becoming more and more aggressive about keeping guests on property.

And if anyone thinks the Parks really don't matter in regards to coporate profits, they're wrong. Had it not been for Marvel and ESPN, WDC would have depended on the Parks for any good fiscal news recently.
Not saying they don't matter. I am saying that many people here put too much focus on a singular unit of a singular division.

Corporate profits aside, since this is a theme park board and all...

The most interesting part is the effect it will have on visitors to central FL.
As Rasulo said yesterday, they are looking to MM+ to keep people on property. Now, with the first reveal of Potter 20, the tug of war between the two resorts is taking shape.
Disney wants the whole trip and all the $.
Uni (the resort, not the architectural firm...) wants a few of the days and some of the $.

Gonna be fun to watch.

I agree... while WDW is still the number 1 theme park destination in the world, and will probably continue to be...I predict they will lose more $ when Uni opens HP 2.0 and their resort. One thing that baffles me is from the outside it appears like Disney doesn't care and aren't worried at all, therefore nothing "big" is in the works.....then even when they announce something THEY think could be a potter swatter (new FTL), it takes them twice as long to build and go live with than Uni.

What am I missing? Form the inside IS Disney worried? Are their big plans in the pipeline and is it because of Uni? And how far are we away from the next "big" thing/land/etc. at Disney (aside from Disney Springs which I think could be big or Avatar which sounds like keeps getting scaled back)

I don't see how this has been any different from what UNI has been doing for the last decade. "playing along and happy to steal some time away from Disney...' - to paraphrase Lee's post.

I can't fathom that is their going forward intent to just be happy for table scraps if they are investing in both attractions and resorts.

I look at it more like.. Disney is pushing more and more to 'vendor lock'. They want to build an experience that says 'when you are on the inside... no one can touch this...' while turning the convenient blind eye to the fact the story isn't as strong (or even breaks) if you try mixing and matching.

Where UNI is positioned better as the 'interoperable vendor' - they make a great product that you are free to plug and play into any combination.. and they sell on their strengths as an individual, rather than putting up walls and being defensive to mixed competition.

The former usually ends up reling on milking their existing customer base.. and eventually becomes entirely defensive.. just trying to not lose ground. The latter sells on what they do well, while not constraining you from experimenting elsewhere. The pitch is 'we're so good, you'll buy our stuff because you want to, not because you have to'

Both have pros/cons depending on the maturity of your business and the market conditions... but I can't see UNI being happy with just scraps anymore. They want to be the streamlined, fit, peer to WDW I think.

Ill give them a few days! *Throws money at them yelling take my money*

(Seriously though, spent so much more on souvenir type stuff there than I did the last several Disney trips combined)

*Also laughs wildly in Disney's face when they presents the "fun" of MM+ vs going to HP 2.0" ;)

I hate to say it, but the next big thing for WDW comes in the form of a wrist band. They pretty much spelled it out on the call that they think NextGen will keep guests on property. As @Lee said, the battle lines are drawn. NextGen vs Uni expansions. It will be interesting to watch for sure.

Based on the numbers and spin from Iger and crew they really think FLE is doing well for WDW. Is this good news or bad news? On one hand if FLE is a success they could again rest on their success and not do much more for a while. On the other hand maybe FLE and Carsland success leads to further expansion. I think based on what Uni is rolling out the Orlando tourism pie is going to grow. The question is how bigs slice is Disney looking for and how much are they willing to spend to get it.

This is pretty much what I was thinking. I think Universal Orlando Resort wants to be central to a visit to Orlando, but will not try to position themselves as a walled city like Walt Disney World. It makes them look good because they're "leaving" room for other businesses. I think this is why they have yet to mimic Disney's Magical Express.

I think NexGen has some serious potential... especially when they start integrating into attractions that can call you out by name or say happy birthday or anything like that (which we haven't seen yet) but for now... eh... I also think the Snow White coaster will be and look better than most think..... where I get nervous is looking at DHS and AK... I know for a fact some Disney visitors are already giving those days up to check out IOA (HP) so if they don't inject a massive IV into those parks soon...those numbers could continue to fall after HP 2.0 and they can't just inject money into the MK, it has to be resort wide now. I think Disney Springs will be a hit as well, but DHS and AK need something or somethings BIG (and I don't know if 1 avatar ride, gift shop and restaurant is all AK needs either)

But how many times can an animated figure say your name before it gets old? The sheer size of the Disney Vacation Club's presence shows that Walt Disney World is being supported by a significant, if not growing, repeat customer base.i think these sort of smaller aspects of NextGen, while they could be cool, will be difficult to adequately market, particularly to returning guests.

Yes, yes, and yes (IMHO).

WDW is surviving on MK. We talk about Universal getting WDW's scraps but it's also Epcot, and especially DHS and DAK that are eating MK's scraps. It's been over 40 years and Disney still hasn't figured out how to match the 'magic' of the Magic Kingdom.

MM+ is not going to help the way Iger thinks it will.

"I've just spent thousands for a vacation of a lifetime and can use my FP+ for Soarin' (which desperately needs to be fixed) or I can travel up the road and experience the 2 most amazing lands in all Orlando."

I know what my answer will be.

TWDC needs to fix DAK, DHS, and Epcot. Fast.

I think the bigger issue for Disney is that when you start trading your half-day at DHS and AK for full days at Uni, the value of staying on property starts to diminish. WDW's entire business plan is to be a walled-off week-long vacation where every dollar is spent at Disney. They aren't just going to lose a 1/2 day here and there, they are going to lose entire days of resort stays and dining. And once you start peeking outside Disney's wall, they start to lose a lot of money at the margin.

Well... ET has been calling out my name for years. And Im gonna be honest, it isnt that thrilling. I have to wonder how much impact something like attractions saying your name would actually have. Granted I'm not the target audience but I think about myself and my brothers at a young age. I think I would have said it was maybe cute/nice/neat but that's about it. And I know my brothers would have cared less about something like that. It would not have been a driver for a return trip and certainly not something I couldn't live without. I just don't see Mickey being able to say your name because a wristband was swiped (So you even know it is nothing more than a gimmick... Kids aren't dumb. Even as a 5 year old, I would have known it was a trick) as a driver for more visitors.

I know it could appeal to some people but I'm not sold that many more people would want to come because of it.

I think the first time it happens, without that obvious beforehand input, it will be really cool, especially for those unaware (be it children or people who did not bother to read what is involved in choosing a MagicBand). I can also see it being incredibly terrifying, especially if face characters really are going to be prompted names. Even Santa Claus asks your name, and he sees you when you're sleeping.

When I returned from WDW last year I showed my little four year old niece photographic evidence that I had met Rapunzel, her fav princess. She was entirely unimpressed: of course I knew Rapunzel, all adults all know each other.

By the same kid logic, she's also not going to be impressed by Merida knowing her name if she meets her in person. Every new grownup she meets at her kindergarten always knows her name and knows who she is.

Eh... Guess it just isn't something that excites me. I suppose it will depend on the manner. If they require you to swipe the band before coming in feel like most people will realize something is up, especially if is only on some attractions
