I too am one who would love to see Spider-Man in The Avengers 2 and this just made me think of something.

Putting aside the legal issues, why are people so keen to see Spidey in an Avengers flick? It would be a 180 for the character. He's essentially a teen loner plagued by self-doubt obssessed with maintaining his anonymity. I don't see him giving up his identity to SHIELD and hanging out with the "grown-ups." Up until the blatent cash-in a couple years ago, a big part of Spidey's character in the comics was that he wouldn't join the Avengers, despite numerous offers over the years.

There is some debate as to when was the first time Spider-Man officially met the Avengers (since he had met many members of the team as individuals previously), but the first Avengers issue Spidey appears in is issue #11 back in 1964. In this self-proclaimed "first meeting," Spider-Man helps the Avengers fight…wait for it… a Spider-Man robot sent by Kang the Conqueror from the future. After this, Spider-Man tried to join the team, but was denied membership (burn). However, he has still hooked up with the group of superheroes many times when they needed a little extra help.

Also, Spiderman became a reserve member of the Avengers back in 1991.

I think you just set up a mean for Spider-Man to be in an Avengers film. He doesn't necessarily need to join the Avengers to be involved.

Plus the last 3 Spider Man movies were somewhere between bad and ghawdawful.

RESERVE. As in "Minor League Player." This is the Marvel Cinematic Universe - when they need a minor league player to come up, they'll let you know. Until then, the crew we have is doing just fine.

I actually really liked the reboot last year. Thought Sam Raimi's trilogy was miscast (could you whine a little more Maguire?) and full of dialogue that would make Hallmark's card writers clutch their pearls.

The only bright side was seeing Denis Leary get paid. We've seen so many BAD Spiderman movies in the past 10 years, he's become an oversaturated and worn out property. Its going to take time to fix it. Plus how many origin stories do we need?

Apparently a buttload. Can we get an Agent Coulson origin film please?

Well Spiderman did beat the X-men in Secret Wars when he showed up in their training chamber

.

I just hope they use the Marvel Barbie comic -

in order to first introduce her to the Avengers and then use the fact she is a toy and does have some dealings with the Toy Story crew to get those guys in the next Avengers. I'd love lots of back and forth between RDJ and Buzz.

Oh, I agree completely. I'd be okay with a glimpse of Spiderman since they all pretty reside in NYC but there's no need for anything more than that. It's not like the Avengers NEED Spiderman's help. :D

I thought you were referring to the overall glut of Marvel origins films, not just Spidey.

No, the origin films have overall been fine, at least inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But constant relaunches of characters every few years like Spidey is pretty pointless and degrades the character IMO. Bit by spider, makes money wrestling, ignores robber, uncle ben gets killed, WE GET IT.

I was under the impression Sony had to keep making movies to hold on to the rights - that the new series was simply a function of keeping the character from reverting to Disney. It's all about the Benjamins!

This was the case until Sony and Disney came to the agreement where Sony retains the film rights and Disney has the merchandising rights.

I was not aware of this. Interesting...not sure it's a great deal. I wonder if it allows Disney to use Sony's Spider-Man versions/likenesses in the parks.
