You are correct. Disney is a little more creative with their discount. Software upgrades allow them to do some fancy numbers with popular rooms. They can now charge more for weekends and AKL Arusha View.

Value and Moderate Free Dining is for Quick Service instead of regular dining plan. Discounts are different between Deluxe, Moderate and Value. POFQ is only 20% discount.

Yep. Disney is working hard to put folks at resorts they don't want to stay at.

No different than calling up a decade ago and the first two resorts they'd always offer were SS and OKW. They don't have as much trouble filling up Poly, WL and BW.

True but box office is only a portion of the money a movie earns in It's lifetime, don't forget home video, ppv, cable and broadcast rights. Deadline reported that Oz cost 200-300 plus 100 million for marketing, not 600-700 including marketing. These enormous tent poles have gotten far too expensive and unfortunately there are ways of making movies cheaper without impacting the experience or vision, look at how Disney trimmed 10s of millions out of the Lone Ranger movie by bunching location shoots out of sequence.

Yeah. That sounds right. Probably about $350-425 million when all is included. Of course, the film still needs to do much more than that to break even and then get into the black. That tells you these films simply cost too much.

Oh, as to Ranger (which I am actually really looking forward to), even after Disney shut down production, costs wound up going well over $250 million. So, it's going to have to be blockbuster just to be profitable.

From a studio perspective, the decision to go all tentpole (which Iger has repeatedly iterated) makes no sense whatsoever. So they've got Marvel (2 pictures/yr), Pixar (1 picture/yr), WDAS (1 picture/yr) and soon Lucasfilm (2 pictures/yr), but that leaves no room for the surprise hits; the movies that gross multiples of their budgets. Films like Sister Act would never get made by today's Disney, a film which grossed $270 million adjusted for inflation. The budget for the film couldn't have been much at all, which means a profit was easily turned. An all tentpole schedule doesn't allow for small movies with big profits. Big mistake, IMHO. Hopefully Horn can get the Studios on a more sensible production schedule that won't make or break the company all of the time.

Well, I did my (very small) part tonight. Voted against Iger and all BoD members. Voted against everything company wanted me to vote for and for everything company wanted me to vote against (the CEO/Prez issue).

Did the exact same thing with my shares. Honestly, after the debacle with Eisner at 2004's meeting, it's really a ballsy move to make to have one person as CEO and Chairman again. What about all the promises for better corporate governance?

I'm always (read: never) surprised by the stupid questions the average shareholder asks at the meeting.

You mean like during the contentious 2004 meeting (I was there) where someone asked Eisner "What ever happened to the Fox and the Hound? Can you bring them back"?

You're kidding right? I honestly think some of those people were Eisner shills as part of that whole dog and pony show. (Perhaps not Evelyn Davis)

"How has spending on the MyMagic+ experience been allowed to overrun it's costs so significantly beyond the $800 million dollar number reported, and when exactly does the company expect to see a specific return on those dollars invested?"

"How much longer do you believe you can use escalating prices to offset stagnant customer growth?"

"Do you as the CEO of the organization, feel it is appropriate for the much needed Fantasyland Expansion to take over 5 years of construction to complete, while your competition is opening attractions in less than half that time?"

"Disney prides itself on being family entertainment, yet the trend of ever escalating price increases in food, lodging, and tickets continues to squeeze customers out of being able to afford a Disney vacation. How does Disney plan on addressing the reality it's pricing trends far exceed any growth in discretionary spending for it's guests and that such changes are leading to less visits to Disney theme parks?"

"Disney theme parks have in the past prided themselves on their presentation and emphasis on show quality. In the face of the wide availability of video and the internet, do you believe the WDW property is living up to that standard that established Disney as the leader in the theme park business?"

"If you believe Disney is living up to its self proclaimed standards of show quality and excellence in it's theme park division, would you be willing to make a visit to a WDW theme park, unannounced, and escorted by non-Disney personal to experience the theme parks as a true guest and not as a VIP group?"

those would be some of my opening salvos :)

In the flip of this, Disney tried to steal $700+ from my mother-in-laws credit card when she was there for the Princess half-marathon. He bill was something like $100 and the changed her bill multiple times up to $700. Then the managers tried to insist nothing was wrong. After several HOURS of fighting, they finally got it fixed. Oddly, room was charged $70... while she was sitting there talking to them!

I'm eagerly waiting for NextGen to roll out, nothing like this will ever happen...

Well Disney finally priced us out, ok so perhaps only for that one weekend. Yesterday we booked our first stay at a non-Disney hotel. For 2 nights in a value resort I simply could not pay what Disney was asking. It was ridiculous and that was with a discount. So, we are staying near DTD in a nicer hotel with a larger room for way less. I expect we will still stay in Disney resorts depending on the price and other factors, but if we really like this hotel this may open up a whole new world (I had to do it!) for us!

I'm not kidding at all. I'm more referring to what @Lee said where someone will wait in line for hours to ask about Figment, or more pin trading additions, etc. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the 04 meeting, but would love to read a transcript of it if you have one.
