Do you really care about spelling.....

I would love to know why. I have had bad spelling for a long time,
and no one has ever complained to me.

I'm a firm believer in - if you don't know how to spell something, look it up.
I don't usually say anything to anyone.

PS...check the spelling in your poll title.

I find that if a person cannot spell at least common words correctly and use moderately accurate grammar, I can't really take anything they say seriously. It is nothing against you, personally, I just feel that anyone trying to post a rumor, for example, on these forums ought to be articulate. If I wrote "sorry for the bad spelling" on the bottom of all of my papers, I don't think that would make my professors any more lenient...

I am not one to correct someone on spelling and grammar, but I notice spelling mistakes right away. It is distracting sometimes when you are trying to read something.
Mistakes happen, oh well!

If you misspell one or two words and mess up grammatically a couple of times, that's ok. However, when it starts to become repetitive, then it definitely becomes a distraction. Just my 2 centavos :)

I do hate bad spelling and grammar in Spanish... it shows the person´s education.. (I hope that doesn´t come across rude, it´s not my intention), at least that´s what it´s said here... I absolutely hate bad spelling when it comes to work related papers. It´s just a shame...

In English, I can understand it´s harder to write because vowels and consonants sound different than how they are written, but there are some obvious mistakes that should be addressed and it´s sometimes annoying when you are trying to read something and find many words that shouldn´t be there because they mean something else in the way they are written.

Wellllllllllll, since you asked....

this is a rather large pet peeve of mine. I'm not the kind of person who would point it out to anyone, but I notice spelling and grammar errors pretty quickly. Often, I'll find typos and other mistakes in my posts, as a result of not proofreading well enough, and most of the time, I have to go back and fix them. It bugs me, otherwise.

So I hold myself to the same standard. :)

I do the same thing. (its a Catholic school thing. )

I knew there was a reason we get along so well.

In my line of work, court reporting in criminal courts, it is very important that I take down every word verbatim, and then make sure the transcript of the proceedings is spellchecked and grammar checked to death. A misplaced comma can really make the difference in a witness's testimony. So it's only natural that I take that eye at work and focus it on other things. But, there are instances where it doesn't bother me. I think most of my posts contained a typo or two due to not checking it thoroughly, but then again, I'm not being paid to check my posts here.

You didn´t make any typos in this post! (At least, I didn´t notice any) ;)

Funny you mention your line of work, because mine is the same. Part of my job is to check spelling, style and grammar for a section of a newspaper, something I love to do. As weird as it sounds, I don´t care for staying until very late when I have to do it, and I hate when I miss an error -as simple as it could be- and it gets printed.

I like when things are spelt right, but I'm not upset when they aren't. I get excluded from having points taken off my papers at school when things arent spelt right, but that dosen't mean that I don't check to make sure that they are spelt the correct way.

3 Things I find annoying:

1- Would of

2- Could of

3- Should of

I have never experienced this phenomenon back home. It wasn't until I moved to the mainland US. I find it rather sad that I moved here from a Spanish-speaking territory, and the written English was better back home than it is in the mainland US. It's rather disgusting when I think about it.

Add me to the "Pray for me, I graduated from Catholic school" list (only until 8th grade, thank God). Maybe it was the memorization of a list of 20 words each week and having them drilled into my brain has given the "gift" of good spelling. I don't know what the grade school cirriculum is today. Is it just "sound it out?" Because that seems like it is.

I guess it depends on your audience. If you are a teen and you are talking or PMing  a friend, then talk (and spell) any way you want. However, if you are addressing adults, most adults I think would say that they find bad grammar annoying.

Figment, you may use that "Please excuse my bad spelling" now, and get away with it. But I guarantee that you will not get away with it in college and in your employment career.

I'm not trying to be mean, nasty, or rotten, it's just a fact of life. So why not at least TRY and use proper spelling and grammar? Sure, some people are not a "natural" with good spelling, but if you read books and APPLY those words EVERYTIME, you might be surprised.

Interesting topic, sure to ruffle a few feathers or rub a few people the wrong way. I do wish people would stop butchering easy words. But i'm not one to nit pick and point out other people's spelling errors in their post's. As to grammar........that can drive me insane. I won't even start.

Those bother me too.

I always tease my husband about breaking up the word "another" as "a while nother" instead of "a whole other" and now he says it twice as much just to **** me off

Bad spelling and grammar are not the end of the world, but when someone does well with both, I just think of him/her as being smarter.

Then again, I hear a lot of educated people saying things like "She did good" on a daily basis.

Overall, I think for most people it's just a matter of getting lazy. And God knows I'm as guilty of that as anyone else.

You can tell my posts that are typed straight into the reply box from the ones I write in Word.

My spelling is not great and whilst I have never been diagnosed with dyslexia I have a problem where I can’t write or type as fast as my brain wants to get the information out and so make simple errors. For example, pairs of letters in the wrong order or even using the wrong word.

On these boards I have no problem with little blips, we are not posting essays, job applications or business tenders so they don’t have to be 100% accurate. Spelling mistakes do not detract form my enjoyment of the forums.

But on my peeves list includes:
  • Not starting sentences with capital letters.
  • The “I” in “I am replying to this post” should be upper case.
  • Text speak – There is no rush or limit on how many characters you can use. It makes life very difficult when trying to read paragraphs full of “Lo M8 CU L8R”. So generally I don’t
  • To and Too.
  • There, Their and They’re
However I’d hate for people to not post out of fear of their mistakes leading to ridicule. My Brother in Law is dyslexic, he is intelligent and articulate, but his written skills are somewhat substandard due to the dyslexia.
