Spaceship Earth not finished?

I've been told by head maintenance of SSE that it is finished. The old scenes are still behind the curtains but there are no further plans to do anything with the finale (decent) than what is there currently.

Agreed and I don't think they could ever top the Jermy Irons script and narraration anyway
Agreed. Irons was THE best.

I quoted Jeremy Irons and SSE for my senior quote a while back:D
I use SSE lines (and other Disney lines) in most of my writing. It just works.

While Walter Cronkite's voice is iconic, I have to say Jeremy Irons' narration, and the music of that iteration of Spaceship Earth is by far the best. I don't know what they were thinking redoing the script. Why mess with perfection?
Agreed. They could have really just reused the music and MOST of the narr.

He's right. It IS finished. It still can be ADDED to, however.

Semantics, I know, but still.

I agree, the whole previous version was easily the best version. I don't know why they went through the trouble to change all that when they could've used that money to fix the descent.

I have a great fondness for the previous version of the ride as well. I constantly listen to the score with and without narrations frequently, but when i went on the "updated" version for the first time, I enjoyed it a lot. It was strange at first not having the narration I had pretty much grown up with, and I wasn't familiar with the music as I previously was, but from the first scene with projection of the cavemen I saw a vast improvement. Each scene had little touches that I found greatly enhanced the experience for me. New effects with the cave paintings, more vibrant costumes and (from what i could tell) better animation of AA's. Hell, the guy pounding the reeds to make papyrus was finally doing it at the same time as the sound effect for once! (that always bothered me). Even the new scenes helped bridge the gap from the past and now which will help inform younger generations (like my little sister who likes both versions). Is the Decent the end all be all extravaganza of the century? Not in the least? But it dose have a larger mass appeal and re-ride ability with its multiple scenario interactive video element. when so many people are staring at a screen with their image on it, there isn't a lot of need for fancy backdrops. It took me a few rides to notice the crappy way the black fabric was hung up. It's terribly done and should be fixed, but there probably isn't a lot casual guest who even notice. I would love to have the old version back with the re-invigorated scenes integrated, but I am glad that what parts they did do properly are there and can only hope for further improvements in the future.

Remember how giddy we all were when the rumor was that Patrick Stewart was doing the narration... those were the days.

"Like a grand and miraculous spaceship our planet has sailed through the universe of time, and for a brief moment we have been among its many passengers"

That and the very final line were too beautiful bookends. The first line quoted here really set you up for something fantastic. The last line just hammered it home.

Since the dawn of recorded time, communication has revolutionized our lives and changed our world. We now have the ability and the responsibility to build new bridges of acceptance and co-operation between us; to create a better world for ourselves and our children as we continue our amazing journey aboard Spaceship Earth."

Yesss!!! as a kid that made me feel entitled as myself to personal "bridge" that gap:ROFLOL:. There is so many emotions I get after listening to that narration with the score in the background. Pure AWESOMENESS:sohappy:

I was excited, I admit.
Damn you Judy Dench!!!!!!!!! :fork::fork::fork:

She's not bad, though. I don't get why people dislike her voice.

Exactly. There was something very moving about hearing the phrase "Spaceship Earth" as you SAW it. Another thing that the new narration does, but not as well. Probably because SSE isn't tangable....it's on your screen.

I, too, miss the majesty of the Irons narration and the authority of the Cronkite narration. Still, I don't hate the new version. I really expected to. For the better part of two years, I heard how stupid and bad it was. I even listened to the ride audio and cringed in all the appropriate places.

Then I actually experienced the ride for myself a couple months ago, expecting it to provoke me into a frothing-at-the-mouth righteous anger at the desecration of the very symbol of EPCOT Center. Only it didn't. I think that Siemens' SSE is designed to speak to a younger audience, one that doesn't remember what life was like before the Internet. That's an alien point of view to EPCOT purists like myself (who are mostly in our 30s and older), hence the mostly negative reviews.

However, it looks to me like most "regular people" love the "interactive EPCOT ball" (btw, was I the only one that had this reaction to that Disney Insider question?)

Agreed in full. Saw it 5 months after the fact. THought I would hate it. Walked onto SSE apprehensive, though excited to finally see it.

Honestly...I really, really like it. It works for the EPCOT of today. Though it's not perfect or done yet, it's a clear successor to the Cronkite Version. It's EPCOT Center in it's ideas, Epcot in it's presentation. A good blend. It just needs SOME help. And we already have talked about that.
