Space Mountain Heading to the Scrap Heap :)

The Conundrum

I tell you Martin, thats really striking me as what I saw, however.... I believe it may have been in a 'protective' plastic wrapping... this would be similar to the heat-shrink wrapping I saw the RNR limo (the one from the sign) in on it's way back to the studios from central shops.... It's like a plastic heat-shrink wrapping around the entire structure.. It doesn't stick to the show pieces, it is 'shrunk (heat?) around them, and then cut away once delivered...

Starting to wish I had taken a picture yesterday... My gut tells me that it won't be out there next time...

Also... is it possible that I saw the ORIGINAL show piece from the lift AFTER it had taken a trip to central shops to be refurbed? I guess so... either way, I think the SM refurb just got interesting :)

Well one thing I know for sure is that lift hill must get redone and in order to do that everything had to be removed. So what you saw could have been the old piece with the two astronauts on it. But the pic you drew did look more like Disneyland's ship from the queue. I guess only time will tell.

Thanks for the updates btw.

Interestingly enough, I am wondering what Disney is planning to do with the Astronaut figures and control characters as well?

Excellent question. At Disneyland the lift hill was redone in 2005 with this really trippy and cool scene that makes you feel like your falling through space and at the very center (end of the track) you can see what looks like a nebula or universe exploding. I am wondering if they are removing all the astronaut stuff and replacing the whole scene with that.

I saw a video of that and it looks like it could work at ours.

If this were a REAL refurb, they'd throw LED lights and fog machines in the "Toothpaste Caps" of the Explorer to make it really look like Ion engines.

They won't though, I know it...
It would be nice...:D Easy, too.

It isn't. Just drove by and whatever you saw is not there anymore.

Are they originally from SSE? I always assumed SM and SSE both had upside down spacemen kind of like how a couple of the old Disney rides had goofy sea serpents. It was a recurring scene the REAL disney imagineers used to put in various attractions.

Cool, huh?:D
No. The SM FedEx postshow reused the 180top astronauts when SSE was refurbed in 1994.
And the poor Waving Girl was left behind...:(

I think there is a mega monstrosity thread that took 5000 posts to get to that conclusion, along with a lot of others. :D

I got a kick out of this! I was just on Disneyland.com and clicked on space mountain and WDW's page used to say exactly what Disneyland's said

Check this out

  • Enter the Space Port and buckle up for a hyper-speed adventure through an even more exciting Space Mountain.
  • Hurtle through the cosmos, past fields of shooting stars, celestial satellites and awesome new special effects.
  • Rocket through the twist and turns to a brand new soundtrack.

And then look how they changed wdw's when someone mentioned it on the boards!

Blast off on a journey into outer space on this classic attraction. Board a sleek, rocket-shaped vehicle in the glow-in-the-dark Space Port and begin a steady climb up the 180-foot high mountain, passing the Mission Control booth and myriad pulsating lights along the way.

Once at the top, feel the wind race across your face as you are propelled through the remote blackness of the dark universe—illuminated only by shooting stars, celestial satellites, spinning black holes and shimmering costellations—during a rip-roaring rocket ride through the farthest reaches of time and space.
And because the majority of the attraction takes place in the dark, you just never know which way you are going to turn or drop!

Wow. We will know the really read the forums and get copy for attractions if they come out with a campaign to promote the rehab; "Wave Till It's Complete"

Now we know what Disney reads with spare time!
They dont read for creative body copy I assure you... they read for other reasons.
