A little unnoticed event during the show is during the first part of the show one of the architectural spikes on the top of the theater was slowly lowered so that when the inflatable Mickey was revealed there were no obstructions
THANK YOU for confirming that! I had a discussion last year with someone when we compared photos and video - both day and night - showing the spire in different positions.

I really don't have nothing ground breaking to reveal other that how the balloon was inflated rather quickly. The balloon was deflated and completely covered until the second fan shot had completely fired. Once that was over the techs uncovered the balloon. When the cue was given to inflate, a huge pneumatic piston pushed the deflated balloon skyward as 4 huge blower fans filled the balloon as it rose. All of this took around 15-20 seconds. The piston inside of the balloon was as tall as the balloon. There is a picture of the tower earlier in the thread. You can see the blowers but the piston is obscured by foliage. Maybe Martin will dig something up that shows it a little better. The effect in the finger was a simple gerb. The holder was actually the tip of his finger. The holder was aluminum. To prevent it from getting tangled or twisted during inflation the tech pulled a rope attached to the holder to page it away from the main part of the balloon. A little unnoticed event during the show is during the first part of the show one of the architectural spikes on the top of the theater was slowly lowered so that when the inflatable Mickey was revealed there were no obstructions.
Also someone pointed out that my date was indeed wrong for the song Out There. It was added in late 95 or early 96 well in advance of the movies release.

AWESOME stuff. :D Thanks so much for posting. So I guess my theory on how he "stood" was wrong?

Interesting on how the gerb was placed....I guess for such a large balloon, the weight didn't matter.

Didn't realize how many techs needed to be working while the show ran live. Quite cool.

Thanks again, Boo!

That's amazing! I would've never thought about having to move the spires.

This has been an interesting thread. I remember when I was little watching the promotional videos for SitS and seeing Mickey and thinking to myself, "is that a balloon?! If it is, how does it not catch on fire?" Now I know!:D

This may already be posted, but it's a very good closeup of the inflating Mickey. You can see some sort of apparatus or different material or discoloration at his fingertip at the 7:30 mark of the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK4G9rtHdgE

You'll see that he goes from first appearing to fully inflated in about 25 seconds.

Wow! No, that too, has not been posted! :sohappy::sohappy: FANTASTIC shot, here. We can actually see him rise up, and the cable used by the tech member for his arm.

Odd, though...The lights were left on! All other tapes I've seen have the lights on him go off until he's just about done (you could see his arm move, though) and until the music built up for his entrance. THIS, though...Wow! You see the whole sequence.

Very, very impressive. The Pyro Geek in me is very happy today.

^ Also note the roof spire; at the start of the video it is visible, by the end of Singing in the Rain it has retracted.

I think a modernized version of SitS along with a nightly (faux) Hollywood movie premiere in front of the theater would be an amazing addition? to the Studios. Of course, the BAH would have to go also.

Sadly a regular show probably will never happen again; SitS needed the whole area south west of what is now Mermaid (and animation?) all the way to Star Tours cleared and closed due to shell fallout. A massive crowd control effort that the park today just couldn`t handle.

In effect squeezing all guests into Hollywood, Sunset and the Hub.

Anything that's centralized and universally available for the ENTIRE park would be a huge step over Fant.

I don't know if you've ever caught the Studios opening show hosted by the Citizens of Hollywood, but the idea is that the director is making a film featuring you. It would be cool to wrap up the night with the premiere of "your" film and the music with the fireworks would be soundtrack of your experiences (Aerosmith music, Star Tours theme, Twilight Zone theme, You've Got a Friend in Me, Indy, etc)

Yep, I've seen it... It's a great little show and YES, that would work in favor for the cohesiveness of the park. Have Alberto Dante (The Director: Often Imitated...Never Nominated. :D) narrate the thing, too. It would be great.

I love the Citizens of Hollywood. They make Servo's ramblings make sense.

Now, get rid of the BAH!
