Someone suggested the idea that Disney offer a trade. Deadpool for Spider-Man. I could get behind this. Deadpool gets to stay R-rated at Sony and Disney gets Spider-Man back in full perhaps while letting Sony continue animated Spider-verse movies and tv shows.

Please somebody make this happen.

Stan Lee's daughter says Disney treated him terribly and hints that she would prefer for Spiderman to stay with Sony because (in her words): "Whether it's Sony or someone else's, the continued evolution of Stan's characters and his legacy deserves multiple points of view".

I honestly would take what she says with a grain of salt, because there were rumors of her and elder abuse with Stan

Stan Lee's daughter: 'No one could have treated my father worse than Marvel and Disney's executives'

Stan Lee daughter isn't on Disney's side

Not only the alleged elder abuse, but Stan was on record saying he really wanted the Fox and Sony characters back with Disney.

While we cannot know for sure, Stan Lee's appearances in the Marvel movies certainly indicates he endorsed them.

As far as multiple points of view, Marvel has done a decent job hiring different directors that bring a unique approach to each film. Thor: Ragnorok is an obvious example of willingness to not just do more of the same.

I’ve heard rumblings another deal is trying to be worked out...any truth to this?

Speculation is that the story was leaked to drum up some public support for Sony and push Disney to be more reasonable.

I think it's likely a deal will be reached. Kevin Feige wants Spider-Man in the MCU, and if anyone has the clout to make it happen, it's him.

I don’t agree with this, because fairness is not a good metric. It changes person to person.

Disney gets 100% of the merchandising revenue from Spider-Man, which is far and away the most lucrative character for Marvel. Sony owns the film rights. Them surrendering 50% of their own claim for something they have the sole exclusive rights of makes no logical sense at all.

As others have said, this news leak is clearly a negotiating tactic. I assume it will close closer to 80/20 or 75/25 Sony.

Which side benefits the most from this deal and what is the fair outcome, is certainly up for debate.

It seems extremely lopsided because Disney wants to reap more of the Spider-Man movie profits, while giving up nothing on their end.

Yes, Spider-Man may be more profitable because of the MCU connection, but the same goes for movies like Infinity War. Surely the presence of Spider-Man in that movie improved the box office to some degree. Should Sony not get something for that?

This article has a lot, including a lot of hurt feelings that may not make a deal possible, but Disney asking for 25% seems reasonable.

I continue to hear that Disney asked for a 25% stake where it would finance that much of the movie and receive that much of the equity upside. This arrangement would only have been for any pictures that involved Marvel & Feige. It wasn’t a forever deal, like the time one Sony made years ago to continue as distributor of James Bond. Back then, Sony cut MGM into a co-financing relationship on the pictures The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and 21 Jump Street, that gave MGM rights to co-finance future installments. The Spider-Man deal was only for pictures where Marvel lent Feige and the weight of its brand and cross pollination in Marvel movies. Still, it was a big ask of Sony, which had been getting a relative bargain at 5% of first dollar gross. That 25% offer sat for a half year, and finally the conversation was the 50% co-fi stake, before Disney called the whole thing off.

I’m hopeful cooler heads will prevail. If something were to happen...apparently it would be part of the studios panel. 25% is definitely reasonable.
