So the picture is of people making a sign and literally defending it against claims it was a gang sign. Alrighty then.
Right? I guess if the picture was from 2015 or something...great. Instead it's from the same year that articles started coming out about another way that has been used...

There’s no point digging in. We know the people in the photo, and we know they are not white supremacists.

That is why one poster was upset enough to risk her membership here by going after the owner of the site: it was suggested (probably without realizing who they were) that her family were white supremacists.

And other posters stood up for them, because it was important enough to do so.

Never said white supremacists were smart!

But the upside-down “OK” thing is definitely a thing for them, no matter how stupid. Just google it. They’ve also adopted Hawaiian shirts. 🤦🏻‍♂️

@Chi84 I’m only half paying attention to this and I missed whatever was deleted. I have friends on all sides and the whole thing is unfortunate. But I believe the pic was randomly dug up from an old trip report of a member here - pretty sure @Darstarr - who is about as far from a gang member as you can get, which is why that line was funny.

There are a bunch of inside jokes going on, and if the reader didn’t know that, it could be misinterpreted.

If there’s a private trip report group, maybe this post would have been better off there.

It seems to me @wdisney9000 thought he was only using pics from his friends’ TRs, as a specific joke, to make one big conglomerate “plagiarized” (that’s the joke) report. Most of them were in on it from the beginning and thought it was funny. (In context, it’s funny.)

Buddy apparently wasn’t in on it from the beginning, which is probably why he didn’t know it was meant to be funny.

There are threads where this place has gotten pretty hostile, so I’m not surprised if his first reaction was to be suspicious - especially if it was presented to him as “look what someone said about you” or whatever.

Steve only got 1/3 of the story, apparently through reported posts, and you can imagine how it must have sounded.

Don’t anyone argue with me, I have covid. This is the way.
Just to be 100% clear, I am not now, and nor have I ever been part of any sort of private trip report group. And after this, I will be deleting all my previous trip reports and will never post another one again.

It appears that only a small group of people were involved in a private joke - on a public forum. They thought it was funny, but those not in on the joke did not, and questioned the appropriateness of certain photos. And the purpose of the thread as a whole.

Wow, what an ugly mess.

It’s not cool to photoshop yourself into someone else’s photo and share it without asking. I know if someone photoshopped themselves in my husband’s place in one of my photos, I would think it was creepy.

And I can certainly understand why someone would be concerned about the “ok” hand sign being used. That has been co-opted by white supremacist losers over the past few years. But it’s also a harmless game, not exclusive to the family pictured in that photo. Google is free. And for Pete’s sake, ASK QUESTIONS before you jump to hurtful conclusions.

Regardless of Keith’s past infractions, inferring that someone is a white supremacist is a pretty bold accusation to make about someone’s character. Being White, American, and Republican doesn’t make someone racist. And I say that as someone who is very much not a Republican.

I hope this thread gets shut down before the arguing and accusations get even more out of control, because I don’t think this is what any of us came here to do.

And let’s not forget the appropriateness of calling someone a white supremacist
When the photo was explained, it was not deleted. Again, the thread and photos were posted without any explanation by someone who has pushed the forums political/social boundaries in the past.

There are words and phrases I used in the past that are now considered inappropriate. I may not agree with it being offensive, but out of courtesy I do not use them. And if I do so accidentally, in all innocence, I still apologize and move on. Some people have no problem with stirring the pot and actually enjoy arguing but it is not beneficial to the forum as a whole.

Using a symbol/word that has more than one meaning in a public arena may cause misunderstandings. The fact that the photo was several years old was not known by the average poster - it could have been taken within the past few months, on an attraction whose closing has been the source of many forum arguments.

And this is where it should end.
