Just out of curiosity - how long was it from ground breaking of Space Mountain until opening date. Was it over 2 years ?

Space Mountain down for 2 years? Not sure that would be a good idea for them anytime soon. I'm going to say that's unrealistic. Is it going to have to be within the next few years? Quite possibly.

Parade of Dreams coming to WDW is old news...and has since been put on hold. Probably a permanent hold. Parades are entertainment, and Disney is in the process of cutting entertainment. Park attendance down = entertainment is the first to go. Why? Entertainment is a non-revenue business unit. Unfortunately, that's the way the ball bounces. I don't agree.

Spectro? See above.

I don't like how management acts like entertainment doesn't create revenue.
Autograph books are one of the main money makers in the parks. Character Dining and Photopass pictures with characters bring in revenue as well.

I've always wondered the opposite. Why do so many people assume that CMs (including bus drivers) know nothing? I'm sure they don't call every one of you in and give you a detailed account of everything that's in the works. But on the other hand, being employed there and sitting down in the breakroom with fellow CMs and talking to their supervisors, I'm sure many CMs (including bus drivers) have at least some knowledge of upcoming events.
I completely agree. Same thing happens where I work. People hear things through the grapevine. People who should not be told things, are close enough to the ones "in the know" to hear something new earlier than management wants them to.

Is that the very latest? I`m told from several places Jan 9th 2009 - give or take a week -until March 2010
Yep, thats IS the exact timeline i was hearing with the exception that it would be close a bit longer than you stated.
Either way..Come this Late fall or Jan9th (which is winter of course) is gonna be the closure.
I hope it can be done in less than 2 years.
There is NO rumour anymore. It IS closing and soon.
The only question is how long. I'd bet my house right now it WILL be down for 18months or so. Which sounds appropriate considering all that will be done.

This is from some of the engineers that have been taking measurements and verifying drawings for the refurb. It has also been verified by TLAND Ops managers. Phil has balked again and will not SM be down for more thatn six months.

The changes:

Cover load area.
Install gates in load area.
Convert control panels from copper to fiber (reposition some controllers).
Add/change pre- and post-show.
Add to unload so it is not so bland.
Refurb trains (no audio, no new cars) with smoother running wheels and seats that should last longer before tearing.
Replace lift with EE version.
Some minor changes to tower control panels and software.

This is all that I have been told will happen, but this has changed too many times to accept as final.

So you're saying that the track will remain the same? If that's the case, why did they spraypaint parts of the steel structure? I mean, I have to that that after 33 years, the actual track itself needs some work!

The problem is that Phil will not allow SM to be down for more than six months. The spray paint was done when the plan was for 16 - 18 months. According to the source that I got the info from, the plan is to refrub SM is smaller chunks and the track is now off the table. (This might change as I am typing this)

I haven't read through the whole thread yet so forgive me if this has already been asked and answered. When will we know how much the resort rates have gone up?
