Solar power farm coming to Disney

Anytime you install any kind of obstacle in the vicinity of a vehicle right-of-way it is going to get hit. Especially in a very large parking lot.

At night time, the panels prevent the over head lights from illuminating the areas around vehicles.

Different engineers have different ideas but this is something I would never design or approve for installation.

I am all for having the parking lots covered with solar panels. It gives Disney its energy, reduces the heat island effect, and provides shade for cars.

Plus the whole obstacle aspect you mentioned is not that big of a deal because a lot of people park in garages (Disney Springs garage, Disneyland Resort garage) and those have plenty of obstacles/columns. Oh, and you can help power those electric cars parking in the new electric charging spots at AK.

-- have to clean them, have to keep the birds away, have to clean the concrete below... and they would have to have fall protection to keep OSHA off Disneys' back...

IDK....I have not heard of anyone doing any major damage to one at any of the Long Island Rail Road stations? And according to wiki, the LIRR handles an average of 337,800 riders a day (although that seems high IMO).

I'm pretty sure then have low volt lights built into them for nighttime visibility.

any wouldn't you need to clean them and keep birds away in a solar farm somewhere anyway?

Even if these circled the outer edge of the parking lots, there would prob be enough panels erected as with this new farm.

yes but they would be on the ground, not requiring a lift to service/clean them

Having Bristol's Mom agree with you is not a good thing.

That's like inviting a troll to your Birthday Party.
Mark my words, this project is all about the PR and low-information subjects will buy it (rather, pay for it with their tax dollars as Duke Energy has already received $900M in federal grants and tax credits). The whole thing is very disingenuous on Disney's part and the location is treacherous. I can just hear mommy and daddy as they are driving past the Mickey Mouse shaped solar power farm, "Look little Calebrius, that is where Disney gets it's electricity from" and then WHAM right into the back of the car in front of them!!!

Let me draw you a map of potential accidents of when people see the monorail, an entrance WDW sign, the Castle, MK toll plaza and any other shiny object. Solar energy wasn't born just yesterday...

Are either right next to a major highway interchange like the Mickey Mouse shaped solar power farm is?

I reject your rejection on this premise.

There are dozens of designs on this same concept being used all over the world right now, but especially in areas that don't have a lot of trees. Many of these places already had covered parking becuase of the sun and just to provide something special for the employees or customers. Replacing these with solar panels just adds an extra benefit to the owners, plust they can also add lights to the under structures. The solar pannels really don't add that much weight and the poles are usually about the same size as normal covered parking structure poles.

Drivers are too busy texting to worry about solar farms on the side of the road.

In general, solar panels don't have to be cleaned. If it's exceptionally dusty and there's been no rain for months, yes, but otherwise the rain takes care of it.

I don't think that's true. That's like saying, "I don't ever need to wash my car because it rains once or twice a month." Your car still gets the grime/dirt on it, even with the rain.

In Arizona, during the late-1970s "Let's all build solar!"-boom, they built a community around a solar farm and, eventually, people figured out it was more headache than it was worth. There were constant maintenance issues and, of course, the constant cleaning. Sounded good, though. That community is just using regular power, now (and has been for decades) and the last I heard (about 10 years back) the solar panels just set dormant on some central community property.
