Solar power farm coming to Disney

I figured they would have put gravel down before installing the panels to avoid potential damage. Surely they're not leaving it dirt/sand, right?

I'm excited this is going in (even though I'm still irked by the removal of the trees). ;)

I took a look at the permit and it doesn't show anything being done in the panel area. There will be a small gravel access road, but the rest will just be left dirt/sand.

I haven't read through this entire thread.... Is this being used in conjunction with the solar panels atop UoE? I know those panels used to power the ride vehicles in UoE, but not sure it does anymore. Wouldn't it make sense to take advantage of that space along with the farm they built?

Nope as far as I know this is totally different system.

Plus, the roof panels (when they were all working at full capacity) only provided a fraction of the overall power that the Universe of Energy pavilion used. So trying to tie them into the outside power grid would be pointless.

I guess my point is since they aren't being used as much, they could be replaced with the same ones that are in the farm adding that much more power. It's better then letting them sit there and do nothing like they have been for so many years

Remember that this isn't a Disney project, this is being done by Duke Energy.

Can we go back to covering the parking lots with solar? All you need is a willing partner. Tampa Airport unveiled the TECO installation on top of its parking garage. Cars go under for shade, TECO installed and operates it and then pays TIA 15K a year for the space. That is a winner all around

I would guess WDW could generate 10Mw without even covering the whole lot and may get 50Mw if they used all available space.

Was this finished on time?

I'm pretty sure it was you would not want Disney to miss out on those sweet tax incentives (which cost you and me real money) and the carbon credits which they can auction off.

This is spoken as someone who has a few Kw of Solar myself but I did not take a tax incentive to install or have one of the solar companies do a 'free' installation (which places a mechanics lien on your house for 20 years in most cases covering the cost of installation)

Yes that would be a good idea not only would the cars be in shade but the emissions would be reduced on startup as they cars would not need to be cooled as much since they were shaded which would be a very green thing to do.

its too bad they built it flat rather than angling it south towards the roadway so guests could make out the shape from ground level a bit
