QotD: What is your favorite non-Disney animated film?

Princess Mononoke. It was the first film I ever watched not in English and also the first Japanese Animation I had seen other than Pokémon as a kid. I honestly believe that had it not been from watching the subbed version of this movie so much as a kid, I wouldn’t have enjoyed foreign films like Parasite as an adult.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse!
Kiki's Delivery Service. Such a charming, low-key sort of story.

The massive amount of taste already jumped out!

Mine personally is between The Secret of NIHM and Spirited Away.

QotD: What is your favorite non-Disney animated film?

My answer for this has changed over the years. Yellow Submarine used to be my go to just because of how much I love the art style. Alas, as of now I definitely have to say The Land Before Time. Total masterpiece of a movie that doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves because of the never-ending array of sequels to the first film. That first movie though... *chef's kiss* perfection! Almost everything about it is straight up iconic. The story which is so good that every animated dinosaur movie after it ripped it off. The characters are legendary and their chemistry is the primary reason there were so many sequels to begin with. Will Ryan as Petrie and Judith Barsi as Ducky are two of the most memorable voiceover performances of my childhood. RIP Judith. :(

On top of the plot and characters, the freaking animation is drop dead gorgeous and still holds up today. What really makes the movie something special for me is the score. "If We Hold On Together" weaves its way through the whole movie in a way that's very dream-like and calls to mind how Fantasia synced music and animation...yes, I think it's THAT good. Oh and of course, you have the death of Littlefoot's mom. Forget about Mufasa, forget about Bumbi's mum...THIS is the death that shook me to my core as a kid and there's a reason so many people still talk about it.

Yea, I can go on. The fact that the original isn't considered an animated classic the same way the Disney movies of its time were still drives me up the wall. As a stand-alone film, it's truly a masterpiece. Also major props to that original run of four Don Bluth movies (Secret of Nimh, An American Tale, Land Before Time, All Dogs Go To Heaven) Each and every one of them could be considered among the great non-Disney animated films. And then...well...

Do you not like Coraline @Outbound!!

Yeah, I'm in a similar boat as @NigelChanning09 only the movie actually scarred me. The Other Mother really scared me back then. I'm sure it's a fine movie nowadays but I have a fear attached to it.

In general, I feel like that style of animation is actually scarier than live-action horror. I know that sounds weird but there's something creepy in how the characters are designed and move in the "Tim Burton style" animation.

Do movies by 20th Century before Disney consolidated them not count?
I would think so, they weren't animated by Disney at the time, Disney just owns the rights to them, therefore while they are in Disney's catalog, they're technically not Disney films because they weren't really made by Disney, they just have animation standards extremely similar to Disney, although their content, themes, and focus are entirely different at times.

The thing that freaked me out about Coraline the most is the stuff they barely mention. The grandma’s sister being one of the victims, the Other Mother always listening, and the dolls being used to lure the children in. Those are the kinds of things that make you uneasy if you really think about it. Even though it’s not subtle, the Other Mother turning into the scariest friggin’ spider was also enough to make me uncomfortable.
