Hey guys! This last week has handed me a heavy dose of “life” (not the cereal,) but now, while minor distractions may come up from time to time, more involved.
.
Project Six: The Simple Things
One of the definitive things that sets Disney apart from other theme parks is the sheer amount of detail. A lot of the times the detail will just be that...little visual cues that help tell the story and set you in the environment. Every so often however there will be a diversion in the parks that while not a full attraction in its own right feels a bit more special than just a little detail. Snow White's Grotto is a perfect example of this, as are the window displays in the Emporium. To cite my avatar, my go to example currently for something like this is Clopin's music box at Disneyland's fantasy faire (please excuse all the Disneyland examples...in three weeks I'll have more of a bearing on what WDW has to offer in this regard.)
Purists: Your task is simple...come up with yet another diversion in the style of the Emporium windows that's not as in depth as an attraction but has a little more to offer than just being another detail in a sea of details. This can be for ANY Disney park.
Innovators: Your goal will be to create an Augmented Reality experience for one specific spot at a Disney park. Basically create something physical in the park that you can interact with via your Smartphone. This shouldn't be a full game or Scavenger hunt, just a simple diversion in the style of the wand effects in Wizarding World of Harry Potter or something of that scale.
Good luck folks. This project is due Thursday, February 8th at 11:59PM Eastern. Jacob and I will be doing our project five podcast on Wednesday which in all likelihood will be really short but we'll be sure to give as much feedback as possible and I'll also try my hardest to go back to visually displaying everyone's work in the podcasts.
Is it possible for Pi and I to get our reviews from you before the podcast? I’d love to know what you thought about them! The podcasting schedule has been really hectic this past week so Jacob and I are going to review the two projects from last round along with all the stuff from project six in one super-sized podcast over the weekend.

I'm going to move on to the next prompt but I also still want to give people a chance to submit something for project five for the next 24 hours since I didn't realize the due date was the same night as the Superbowl. I'm also not sure how to distribute points for this round between Pi and Ace since if I go according to how I've been doing it they'd only get one point a piece which I think is unfair to them since they put in so much effort. Thinking about giving them five points each but I don't want it to come across like I'm just updating the points/leaderboard on a whim so feedback on this issue would be appreciated.

Rainbow Falls Cavern

-The Real History: 1956-1977-

One of my favorite Imagineering stories is the story behind Rainbow Falls. Rainbow Falls was housed inside of Rainbow Cavern. In 1956, The Rainbow Caverns Mine Train opened in Disneyland as an anchor attraction for Frontierland. Four years later, in 1960, the attraction was expanded into the Mine Train through Nature’s Wonderland. Rainbow Cavern remained as one of the biggest draws even in this new version with Rainbow Falls as the most impressive feature.

Rainbow Falls was impressive. During development, the Imagineers were told by outside consultants that a rainbow waterfall would not be possible. That too many real-world limitations would keep it from ever working properly. The Imagineers didn’t listen to the naysayers. They found a way.
When everyone else told them they couldn’t, the Imagineers believed they could and made that dream a reality.
Rainbow Falls delighted guests for over a decade until the Mine Train through Nature’s wonderland closed in 1977 to make way for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

-The Alternate History: 2015-
In 2015, as development began on Star Wars: Galaxy Edge, one imaginer took notice of the entrance to the land in Disneyland and how it connects to Frontierland. There was to be a short, almost archway-like cave.

This imaginer had an idea to expand this entrance cavern a bit out into Frontierland and make it a tribute to Rainbow Cavern from the classic attraction.
Not anything on the scale of a full walk through attraction, but a lovely display and tribute to the classic attraction to make the entrance a bit nicer. It wouldn’t even be large enough to be listed on the guide map. But it would add nice atmosphere to the area. More importantly, it will pay respect to the spirit of the Imagineers who made their imagination a reality when no one else believed they could with the original Rainbow Falls.

-The Alternate Future: 2019-

In 2019 when Star Wars Land opens, the all new Rainbow Falls Cavern opens as the entrance to Galaxy’s Edge. Most people walk right on by to get to the exciting new land only briefly admiring the lovely waterfall as they trample over each other in a mad dash to get to the Jar Jar Binks E-Ticket Experience!

In this alternate history that includes Rainbow Falls Cavern, all the rides in Galaxy’s Edge were replaced with Jar Jar Binks based attractions. I’m not sure why as that has no connection Rainbow Falls. Butterfly effect and all I suppose.
The technology used to bring Rainbow Falls Cavern to life is taken from the recently opened Pandora: The World of Avatar.

The cave is full of black light and bioluminescent effects. Crystals growing in the cave glow with magical colors. Small creeks with different lighting effects line the walkway winding through the cave. Small geysers help add a kinetic energy to the cave. The walkway itself has a colorful shine similarly to the paths of Pandora.

Of course, the highlight of Rainbow Falls Cavern is Rainbow Falls themselves. Much like the original, it is an awe-inspiring, roughly 10-foot tall waterfall of many colors! Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple!

This model of the original Rainbow Falls represents pretty much the entirety of the new display other than some crystal lamps used to add more light to the path for safety reasons/to hide the black lights.
Overall, these new Rainbow Caverns help give an otherworldly feel to the Galaxy’s Edge entrance while also being a beautiful homage to Disneyland’s past. It also serves as little slice of Pandora for the West coast.
Most people don’t think much of it beyond being an interesting extended entryway to the new land, but fans of classic Imagineering will love this small slice of the past! The tribute to the past will also help pacify Disney purists upset about Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge being in Disneyland. Even if it is only about 20-30 meters of walkway between two lands in a slightly longer version of a cave that was already planned.
Thanks for all the submissions this round. I'll be giving written reviews throughout the day tomorrow leading up to the podcast. In the meantime, let's jump into the next prompt.
Project Seven: New Frontiers
Frontierland has always been a problem area of Disney parks for me. Paris certainly does it the best with the unified Thunder Mesa storyline, but state-side it seems the area is little more than a footprint for Big Thunder and Splash. Not only do the mountain attractions overshadow the rest of the land's appeal, it's also got the problematic theme of something that was iconic in the 1950's but has long since diminished in the pop culture landscape. The goal of this project with both prompts is to breath new life into the classic Disney "Land".
Purists: Your goal will be to re-purpose the area currently being used for Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland and hypothetically reimagine it as an expansion of Frontierland. This new area may take inspiration from Discovery Bay but may not be a direct clone. An emphasis should be placed on sparking new life into the tired "old west" atmosphere the land represents.
Innovators: For this project you will design a stand-alone E Ticket attraction for either state-side Frontierland. The goal with this attraction should be to blend state of the art technology with the classic Americana appeal of the land's theme. You may design a mini-area to house the attraction but the Purist prompts should have more of an emphasis on the overall land where this should very much be focused on the singular attraction.
Good luck, folks. This project is due Friday, February 16th at 11:59PM Eastern.
Alright, for the Creator Games, my team did a Woody's Round Up dark ride. I had done artwork for it but not much else.

If I did the ride itself as a very different ride, could I reuse the art work (Probably with color added), but keep the basic concept of a Woody's Round Up Dark Ride?
Yeah, I have some ideas to up the scale a bitI'd sign off on this, but keep in mind the attraction should be the scale of an E Ticket.
When will the podcast be tonight? There were so many great projects for project six I can’t wait to hear what you and Jacob think of them!!I'll be posting the prompt for the next project shortly after the current project's deadline. Looking forward to any last minute additions to the roster. Jacob and I will be recording our podcast tomorrow which will cover Pi and Ace's dining projects along with everything presented from Project Six.
