Also to make things easier on the podcast schedule I'm going to give everyone an extra 24 hours to turn in the prompt. Projects now due Friday, February 10th at 11:59PM Eastern.

Project Six: The Simple Things
aaf482372LARGE.jpg

One of the definitive things that sets Disney apart from other theme parks is the sheer amount of detail. A lot of the times the detail will just be that...little visual cues that help tell the story and set you in the environment. Every so often however there will be a diversion in the parks that while not a full attraction in its own right feels a bit more special than just a little detail. Snow White's Grotto is a perfect example of this, as are the window displays in the Emporium. To cite my avatar, my go to example currently for something like this is Clopin's music box at Disneyland's fantasy faire (please excuse all the Disneyland examples...in three weeks I'll have more of a bearing on what WDW has to offer in this regard.)

Purists: Your task is simple...come up with yet another diversion in the style of the Emporium windows that's not as in depth as an attraction but has a little more to offer than just being another detail in a sea of details. This can be for ANY Disney park.

Innovators: Your goal will be to create an Augmented Reality experience for one specific spot at a Disney park. Basically create something physical in the park that you can interact with via your Smartphone. This shouldn't be a full game or Scavenger hunt, just a simple diversion in the style of the wand effects in Wizarding World of Harry Potter or something of that scale.

Good luck folks. This project is due Thursday, February 8th at 11:59PM Eastern. Jacob and I will be doing our project five podcast on Wednesday which in all likelihood will be really short but we'll be sure to give as much feedback as possible and I'll also try my hardest to go back to visually displaying everyone's work in the podcasts.

I'm going to move on to the next prompt but I also still want to give people a chance to submit something for project five for the next 24 hours since I didn't realize the due date was the same night as the Superbowl. I'm also not sure how to distribute points for this round between Pi and Ace since if I go according to how I've been doing it they'd only get one point a piece which I think is unfair to them since they put in so much effort. Thinking about giving them five points each but I don't want it to come across like I'm just updating the points/leaderboard on a whim so feedback on this issue would be appreciated.

Rainbow Falls Cavern

-------------------------------------------------------

-The Real History: 1956-1977-

3.png

One of my favorite Imagineering stories is the story behind Rainbow Falls. Rainbow Falls was housed inside of Rainbow Cavern. In 1956, The Rainbow Caverns Mine Train opened in Disneyland as an anchor attraction for Frontierland. Four years later, in 1960, the attraction was expanded into the Mine Train through Nature’s Wonderland. Rainbow Cavern remained as one of the biggest draws even in this new version with Rainbow Falls as the most impressive feature.

2.png

Rainbow Falls was impressive. During development, the Imagineers were told by outside consultants that a rainbow waterfall would not be possible. That too many real-world limitations would keep it from ever working properly. The Imagineers didn’t listen to the naysayers. They found a way.

When everyone else told them they couldn’t, the Imagineers believed they could and made that dream a reality.

Rainbow Falls delighted guests for over a decade until the Mine Train through Nature’s wonderland closed in 1977 to make way for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

4.png

-------------------------------------------------------

-The Alternate History: 2015-

In 2015, as development began on Star Wars: Galaxy Edge, one imaginer took notice of the entrance to the land in Disneyland and how it connects to Frontierland. There was to be a short, almost archway-like cave.

5.png

This imaginer had an idea to expand this entrance cavern a bit out into Frontierland and make it a tribute to Rainbow Cavern from the classic attraction.

Not anything on the scale of a full walk through attraction, but a lovely display and tribute to the classic attraction to make the entrance a bit nicer. It wouldn’t even be large enough to be listed on the guide map. But it would add nice atmosphere to the area. More importantly, it will pay respect to the spirit of the Imagineers who made their imagination a reality when no one else believed they could with the original Rainbow Falls.

-------------------------------------------------------

-The Alternate Future: 2019-

6.png

In 2019 when Star Wars Land opens, the all new Rainbow Falls Cavern opens as the entrance to Galaxy’s Edge. Most people walk right on by to get to the exciting new land only briefly admiring the lovely waterfall as they trample over each other in a mad dash to get to the Jar Jar Binks E-Ticket Experience!

7.png

In this alternate history that includes Rainbow Falls Cavern, all the rides in Galaxy’s Edge were replaced with Jar Jar Binks based attractions. I’m not sure why as that has no connection Rainbow Falls. Butterfly effect and all I suppose.

The technology used to bring Rainbow Falls Cavern to life is taken from the recently opened Pandora: The World of Avatar.

8.png

The cave is full of black light and bioluminescent effects. Crystals growing in the cave glow with magical colors. Small creeks with different lighting effects line the walkway winding through the cave. Small geysers help add a kinetic energy to the cave. The walkway itself has a colorful shine similarly to the paths of Pandora.

9.png

Of course, the highlight of Rainbow Falls Cavern is Rainbow Falls themselves. Much like the original, it is an awe-inspiring, roughly 10-foot tall waterfall of many colors! Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple!

10.png

This model of the original Rainbow Falls represents pretty much the entirety of the new display other than some crystal lamps used to add more light to the path for safety reasons/to hide the black lights.

Overall, these new Rainbow Caverns help give an otherworldly feel to the Galaxy’s Edge entrance while also being a beautiful homage to Disneyland’s past. It also serves as little slice of Pandora for the West coast.

Most people don’t think much of it beyond being an interesting extended entryway to the new land, but fans of classic Imagineering will love this small slice of the past! The tribute to the past will also help pacify Disney purists upset about Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge being in Disneyland. Even if it is only about 20-30 meters of walkway between two lands in a slightly longer version of a cave that was already planned.

Apologies for the long wait on the reviews. First off let me say that in spite of only having two projects turned in, I love that it once again continues to play into the theme at the heat of this season which lies in the title...Purists vs. Innovators. It's fitting that we get one proposal from each prompt, and I thank you both again for sticking with what wasn't exactly the strongest idea I've ever come up with for a project.

We'll start with @Pionmycake. Once again presentation continues to be ramped up a notch with an unconventional approach that I've never really seen but definitely struck a chord. Awesome job on the Tiki Room injoke ;) The humor throughout just screams your personality much in the same way that @monkey92514 did in his run from seasons 7-12. The dining experience for me at least sounds very do-able. It takes the best of a micro-factory tour and a ride and blends it into one. Perfect attraction choice and top notch execution.

@AceAstro
you were definitely ambitious with your ideas, as an Innovator proposal should be. Very good job on making the ride vehicles have the space required to pull off the needs that a dining experience would call for. I wish there was a bit more to go off of from the menu and what the food offerings would actually entail, but what you lacked in that department you made up for in a really solid ride write up. I love that your attraction calls to mind classic Epcot like Maelstrom with a great mix of culture, history, and a look towards the future. At the same time you're not stuck adhering to a strict structure so the flow of the attraction feels continually fresh and unique the whole way through. Also gotta give props to the very professional looking map layouts. Visually speaking this game just keeps getting better and better. All in all two very good proposals that leaned into the best of what their respective sides had to offer.

Also, while researching for this, I found a really funny excerpt from the Yesterland article on Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland

The biggest part of the Mine Train ride to survive the demolition of the old ride was Cascade Peak, a rugged mountain with several large waterfalls. Back in 1960, Cascade Peak was surrounded by little trees, giving the appearance of a mountain rising majestically above a forest. As the trees grew taller over several decades, Cascade Peak appeared to become smaller and smaller. The actual height of the peak didn’t change, but our perception of its height was changed by the relative scale of the trees and the peak.

Until the end of Summer 1998, the waterfalls of Cascade Peak continued to roar into the Rivers of America. Before the end of 1998, Cascade Peak was completely gone. Years of water damage had taken their toll on the man-made peak’s structural integrity.
The problem was solved with a bulldozer.

Pumpkin spice lattes. Rose gold mickey ears. Astrology. What do all these have in common? Basic White Girls.

Just kidding (mostly)

Another thing that fits in with this theme is one of the best picture spots in the Magic Kingdom. Nope, not the castle...

The Purple Wall

This seemingly unassuming wall between Main Street and Tomorrowland has become a popular photo spot for many. Wanting to appeal to an even wider audience, as well as tie in with the spacey feeling of Tomorrowland, this wall gets a wonderful make-over that during the day just looks like a random scattering of stars and galaxies. However this wall comes to life at night as the stars come to life twinkling back and forth creating wonderful constellations both real and Disney. A simple upgrade adds even more life to the area and even more selfies to instagram. Win Win.

Tucked away under the canopy of the Tomorrowland restrooms, where face paining presently resides, will be a new kiosk called the "Tomorrowland Commlink." At this Commlink, guests will be granted access to six different buttons of varying color. "In the know" guests can punch in a unique, three color code to recieve a transmission from one of many Tomorrowland residents, who state a greeting or message to guests before dissapearing. These transmissions will come to life through the viewport (an LED screen), where swirling lights move in a pattern to form an image resembling who, or whatever is on the other side of the transmission.
Complete list of Codes and Transformations:
Friendly Alien (pictured above)- Green, Cyan, Red
Hostile Alien (from AE)- Purple, Lavender, Blue
Tom Morrow- Blue, Cyan, Lavender
Robot from Space Mountain Games and Exit- Green, Red, Green
Stitch- Cyan, Blue, Red
Mike Wasowski- Green, Green, Green
Sully- Blue, Purple, Cyan
Rover- Green, Red, Blue
Speedway Announcer/Checkered Flag- Purple, Red, Green
Sarge- Blue, Blue, Red

Upon TRON Lightcycle Power Run's opening, Quora will be added with a "Blue, Cyan, Cyan" Pattern

Thanks for all the submissions this round. I'll be giving written reviews throughout the day tomorrow leading up to the podcast. In the meantime, let's jump into the next prompt.

Project Seven: New Frontiers
2.jpg

Frontierland has always been a problem area of Disney parks for me. Paris certainly does it the best with the unified Thunder Mesa storyline, but state-side it seems the area is little more than a footprint for Big Thunder and Splash. Not only do the mountain attractions overshadow the rest of the land's appeal, it's also got the problematic theme of something that was iconic in the 1950's but has long since diminished in the pop culture landscape. The goal of this project with both prompts is to breath new life into the classic Disney "Land".

Purists: Your goal will be to re-purpose the area currently being used for Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland and hypothetically reimagine it as an expansion of Frontierland. This new area may take inspiration from Discovery Bay but may not be a direct clone. An emphasis should be placed on sparking new life into the tired "old west" atmosphere the land represents.

Innovators:
For this project you will design a stand-alone E Ticket attraction for either state-side Frontierland. The goal with this attraction should be to blend state of the art technology with the classic Americana appeal of the land's theme. You may design a mini-area to house the attraction but the Purist prompts should have more of an emphasis on the overall land where this should very much be focused on the singular attraction.

Good luck, folks. This project is due Friday, February 16th at 11:59PM Eastern.

Alright, for the Creator Games, my team did a Woody's Round Up dark ride. I had done artwork for it but not much else.

If I did the ride itself as a very different ride, could I reuse the art work (Probably with color added), but keep the basic concept of a Woody's Round Up Dark Ride?

This is honestly probably the best project all season. I'd love to get something in this project, but I'm worried I won't be able to think of anything. For me, I think I did pretty much exactly what I would do for a Frontierland expansion during Season 3 of Sorcerers Apprentice with our Sierran Expedition project. Definitely one of the few projects I've been pretty completely satisfied with.

Now that I'm done stroking my ego, I've got some thinking to do.

I'll be posting the prompt for the next project shortly after the current project's deadline. Looking forward to any last minute additions to the roster. Jacob and I will be recording our podcast tomorrow which will cover Pi and Ace's dining projects along with everything presented from Project Six.
When will the podcast be tonight? There were so many great projects for project six I can’t wait to hear what you and Jacob think of them!!

@spacemt354, really solid job. Very much a natural extension of the RPG element that Star Wars Land has been aiming to strive for. I'll admit you went above and beyond what I was expected from the prompt. Lots of similarities between this and Achtoo Island from the first project which isn't a bad thing, more establishes your overall style. :) The augmented reality makes things a little more open ended, though personally I was expecting something on the scale of having the lightsabers on the smartphones...which is an incredibly natural idea that works well as a good competition to Universal's wands. It's the show experience this is attached to that is a bit more ambitious than what I was thinking when designing the prompt. In spite of that and since Galaxy's Edge and the RPG elements that go along with it are such a blue sky concept at this phase, everything you did felt very naturalistic to what we've come to expect from Innovative Imagineering.

@D Hindley. First of all, let me apologize in advance if I pronounce the name of the darn hammer wrong on the podcast. ;) It's interesting, while both you and Space went above and beyond in the respective prompts, this very much reminded me of a modernized Sword in the Stone ceremony which helped me wrap my mind around the extended show elements a bit more. I was going to Disneyland yearly in the last years of that classic show in front of King Arthur's Carousel and one of the things I remember fondly about it was how under-stated. It was never listed on the park map and only caught the attention of those who truly knew to look for it. With this, I think Thor works very well to capture that same spirit, though I imagine the god of thunder would draw a loftier crowd than Merlin ever did. ;)

@AceAstro...Yes! We have a winner here, folks! This is exactly the type of scale I was wanting from a presentation like this. Very solid work adding interactive elements into the app and making it something that can be enjoyed just as much outside the park. Very much calls to mind the online component to Disneyland's "Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters" when that attraction first opened. The way the app works with what people are seeing in-park is ingenious. My only slight concern is that the cartoony, bright ascetics of Zootopia wouldn't fit into the serene, naturalistic settings of the Oasis. Guess I'll have to make that ruling for myself in a couple weeks (Hyyyyyype!!!!) All in all I love the charm and detail packed into this and is absolutely something that would add to the charm of the park.

@Pionmycake, inspired work once again, my friend! The craft and passion you put into your projects is clearly on display, as is your sense of humor. The Jar Jar Binks butterfly effect is a bonafide spit-take. You absolutely got the scale of what this prompt was calling for and managed to work in some added elements such as the little slice of Pandora that made this out of the way spot all the more special. As someone who's frequented Big Thunder Trail as a shortcut since my boyhood trips to Disneyland, I could easily picture something like this going into the area and visually it does serve as a perfect transition into Galaxy's Edge with the mining/frontier theme mixed with the surrealist colors and other-worldly vibe the Pandora effects give off. Probably my favorite proposal of the round.

@pixie_princess very good introductory project for your first time playing. Definitely short and sweet! While I'm not familiar with this particular "Wall" (I guess the Disneyland version might be Main Street's infamous "Porch", perhaps ;) ) the idea of adding constellations on it makes it a very natural transitioning point into Main Street. What I like most about the concept is how the effect improves at night, making for a great visual cue during the day and something truly special after dark. Great work!

@Magic Feather
while it's still a bit on the short side, this might be my favorite project of yours this season and really shows off your potential. Excellent work. This is such a simple freaking idea that you really don't need a ton of detail to get the point across. All the color patterns for the different characters are really on point. I could absolutely see this being something Disney Redditors obsess about trying to log all the different color combinations. Best of all it's off the beaten path, isn't something included in the park map, but would absolutely be an inclusion into Tomorrowland that would make the area pop with character...pun intended. Perhaps some samples of quotes the different characters could say would have been nice, but all in all I'm very impressed and excited about this idea!
