Selfie sticks - is this a thing at WDW yet? Disney clarifies policy

Are Selfie Sticks and Telescoping Sticks the same or different? I just bought the smallest telescoping stick I could find for my trip, just being respectful of those before I even get there by using the smallest. I only want to get video of some over the head shots of different areas.(not so much for selfies) Personally I do not see anything wrong with these sticks as long as guests are respectful of others while using them. But some are in their own world and think that they are rulers and have the right to accidentally hit someone without saying a simple I'm sorry. If everyone who had a stick went with the mentality of respect for other guests in mind, I think there would not be an issue. If Disney CM's see guests interference by the sticks, do you think they should say something to the violating guest? I think they should at least make the guest aware that the stick may be interfering with other guests experiences an to please be aware. Just something NICE like Disney would say.

I was in the Fastpass line for BTM yesterday and this South American tour group was armed with them. They also had a professional camera crew filming the experience.

While I was on the PeopleMover yesterday, this woman was driving on the speedway and taking a picture with a selfie stick.

More and more attractions are adding signs at the front saying "No selfie sticks." It's nice to see WDW doing something about it.

I'm deaf in left ear, if someone goes by with the stick, I would not hear them, saying excuse me. Maybe I should buy a bicycle helmet.;)

Just got back from 2 days at the parks...and man they are everywhere with the south american tour groups! Groups of 25+ and they can;t have anyone take their picture for them? Oh..and how rude they are swinging them around while yelling for their friends to wait for them to take their selfie....ugh.

I've ranted a lot about this already, but it still surprises me how dangerous and obtrusive these things are.
Shocking.... They are usually so considerate of others....

That professional camera got the boot..at least one of them did. I saw them being approached about it. I am just wondering how they got it into the park in the first place as there is a clear "no professional video equipment" rule in place..and that camera was for sure way bigger and professional than that then even DISNEY THEMSELVES use for their blogs.

If this is the one you are referring to as least. I saw him being asked to leave.

Yeah, this was one of them I saw. There was another one with longer black hair.

My question is, why weren't they stopped at bag check? If there is a rule in place, why wait for them to enter the park and then kick them out?

Can the camera be disassembled into much smaller parts? If so then security may not even know what they were looking at. Technically it's not a bag so he wouldn't have to go to the security check point anyway. All he would need to do is walk straight up to the entrance gate, touch his Magic Band to the ball, and walk right in. An inattentive CM may not even have noticed.

Doesn't disassemble. It should have never been allowed through the front gate. I guess he could have bypassed bag check but there are still security guards standing at bagless entry as well.

Fair enough. This appears to be a complete breakdown in security. Of course we know just how thorough they are. You could probably get through the front gate with a howitzer.

I was out in DL a few weeks back and was surprised to see "No selfie sticks" signage in queues to actual attractions.

I'd like to see a large trash barrel at the last manned point in the queue alleviating riders of the burden of carrying these things. (If you have it out, even if folded down, it should be assumed it will be unsecured on the ride.)

We just got back, two weeks ago, from DLR and didn't see any selfie sticks. That doesn't mean that they weren't there, but the guest probably weren't being intrusive. We felt the guests at DLR were nicer and more polite than many of the guests we have seen at WDW in recent years.

As for security at WDW, I have gone through with a backpack and baby. The security personnel never looked in the bag, because he was talking and playing with the baby.

With security..your mileage will vary..

Example: Saturday I was able to walk into epcot with a huge camera bag and the security did a brief look inside to only one of the 3 compartments and sent me on my way...

later that day at DHS, the security literally picked up my bag to weigh it, then looked in every possible compartment for several seconds before asking me questions of what was in there... (I honestly don't mind this level of precaution).

I remember being asked what was in my hoodie pocket, pulled out my phone and said "keepin' it dry" it was pouring rain at the time, he let me throu without a problem then. I always show them my cellphone case though with the phone in it. Heck I even show them the empty phoinecase for my samsung smartphone too! {that is almost always in my hand anyhow so its belt case is empty}
