I'm very happy that Disney have not had to get into parking structures. I 'm not at all keen on the one at Universal. Not only are they unattractive, all of those support posts are potential door dingers, and I also feel that the closed in nature of them makes things easier for car theft.

sorry, I was thinking of Paradiso.. How about gutted? Is gutted a better word? All of the clubs have had that treatment..

Hopefully they'll be something new there sooner rather than later.

But, as I said before.. DTD is not a ghost town as some would like to believe.. it is quite popular, and quite busy...without the clubs.... not saying it was right or wrong to close them.. just saying, it's still busy..

Yep that is very true. Reports from regulars indicate that the place is busy.

It would be nice but it is really not "needed" as there is typically quite a bit of open parking behind Cirque. I don't even bother looking for parking at the Market Place anymore I just park behind Cirque and take the boat over. Parking garages are quit expensive to build and you typically do not build one unless you have no other option. They also aren't the most attractive structures either.

However parking is becomming more difficult even while we are in a recession AND the former PI has yet to be redeveloped. So psarking garages may become inevitable. This parking problems may also be why it is taking awhile to develop PI. They may need the parking garages first. I would think Disney could get financing rather easily if they decide to charge a nominal fee to park. They could also offer validated parking for restaurant/movie/cirque guests. They definitely need a "transportation center" that includes a taxi stand and valet parking also. (and someday a monorail or lightrail connection :)) The whole complex could best be located in the area behind cirque, IMO.

A parking fee would be the kiss of death for DTD. I really don't see it happening. Disney have the luxury of space, and they can certainly get the additions done to DTD without needing to move into parking lots.

Oh I HATE the parking garage at [that other theme park]. Horrible to get in to and out of!

I did a quick search parking garage vs. parking lot. The price per space was simply insane when compared to your typical asphalt parking lot. Figures came in around $12-15k per space for the barebones garage above ground, $25-30k underground. The price for a standard parking lot was about $4k per space.

I knew there'd be a price difference, I didn't know it was that different!

the big problem i have with parking structures is that they are generally an eyesore.... they are great for accomodating crowds of cars, but are ugly, generally....

stay with flat lots, and control parking accordingly... the problem with bus hopping to the parks still happens a lot too

How is it still a problem? The buses do not go for DTD to the parks. I can't fathom that people are actually willing to spend 2 hours or more on a bus to avoid paying $14. There are far easier ways to get around paying parking fees for the truly cheap than parking at DTD.

I really don't mind the one at USO/IoA, besides the fact that its a real trek to the parks once you park. The fact that it is so far away (from the parks and the street) and hidden within the trees kind of makes it less of an eyesore to me. However DTD wouldn't have this advantage. Building a parking garage at DTD would be a terrible idea I think, and charging to park would be even worse.

You should see the Mickey and Friends parking structure at Disneyland. It's just like Universal's...only much, much bigger.

Well... In 2006 we stayed at SSR, we were close (facing) to DTD... We were about a 2 minute walk from the closest SSR bus stop.... Which was about a 10 to 15 minute walk from DTD...

I would suspect that some people understand that it would be about a 15 minute walk from DTD to SSR, and might be willing to exploit that understanding.

Sounds plausible and there is a really easy fix for that.... a nice little sign at the SSR bus stops that says please present you resort ID when boarding the bus and of course it would actually have to be enforced as well.

Not really...
Mickey and Friends is one level taller than the Uni garages, and a bit longer than one. The two at Uni together equal much more parking than Mickey and Friends.

I understand folks issues with parking garages (even if I disagree with those opinions) but the truth is they may not have a choice in the matter especially if the rebuilt PI area is as popular as it potentially could be.:)

Oh, and another benefit of parking garages is they make more land available for expanding facilities and retail areas as Uni has so perfectly demonstrated. As big as the DTD area is, space will be an issue sooner or later. Parking garages offer a solution. Satellite parking does not. :hurl:

There's some "if" in there, but let's face it, should Disney build a parking garage, especially if they build it in a current parking lot, then then the overall effect will be a plus. Yes, the structure will be unsightly, but that can be overcome to a degree. And having more spaces to park always makes things a little easier overall........

Interestingly, Universal charges $3 to park in their CityWalk garage beginning at 6pm and running until 10pm when it becomes free for those going to the clubs. When they began that $3 charge a couple years ago, I thought THAT would really kill business. As far as I can, it's hasn't. But CityWalk is more about restaurants and less about shopping.

Really, there is no need for a parking garage at DTD. It can get busy at peak dinner hours but there is always parking in the L-M-N-O-P-Q lots down at the Disney Quest end. I parked in the lot by T-REX last night around 9pm and there were tons of spaces available. The only times I've seen the lots at full capacity were on new years eve and 4th of july when people thought there were going to be fireworks in DTD....and there weren't.

Exactly right. During weekend nights during Spring Break, when I agree it was hard to walk through DTD for the number of people, the massive lots behind Cirque/HoB were never more than 1/3 full. Even the lots in front of Cirque usually have quite a few spaces toward the street.

The problem is the only part of DTD with anything interesting left--Marketplace--has the least amount of parking (even less since they built T-Rex on one lot and removed spaces in the refurb). People will circle for 30 minutes because they don't realize they can (or are too lazy to) park just 5 minutes away and walk.

I honestly think the Marketplace's lot besides Basin should be utilized for other non-parking related uses.

I also think that the exits for the entire parking area should be seperate from the entrances. I hoped that when they reworked the Pleasure Island lot that we would begin to see some changes, but I'm sure next to nobody at TDO has ever parked their car across the street.

Such as?

They were to rework the parking traffic flow but the delays with anything having to do with Pleasure Island have put that on hold. DTD cast members do park across the street behind the Hess station.
