Sad day for Harry Potter fans

And the ultimate sacrifice would be Harry realizing that he is the final horcrux and taking the steps to destroy himself. IDK seems logical to me. Does anyone else think that the letter Harry found in the cave at the end of the 6th book was written by Sirius' brother? Sorry to spin this into other rumors but I'm just curious if anyone has any thoughts on that.

It's all perfectly logical to me too. I don't really see how the books can end any other way and still make 100% sense.

Yeah, it would be a little sad. But it's how things have to be.

I don't think Snape's evil, but I could do with Malfoy getting the boot.

Both of them dying is a possibility. True that Snape isn't totally evil, but he may do something like sacrifise himself in the favor of saving Harry.

I can see this happening as a final redeeming moment for Snape.

I hope that Harry survives as well as a certain gal from Ravenclaw (hinthint) of course, but if I had to guess...

Ginny, because that would have a lot of emotional resonance for a lot of characters.
Snape, in a last, grand "up yours, moldy warts!" gesture

There is so much I could say, and believe me, I've got three files on my computer of my theories, in addition to many fanfiction attempts. But, if I say anything more, we will be here all night.

I had waited to read the books forever, not sure why but started reading them about a month or so ago and finished the first 3 in about 2 1/2 weeks for the most part as I really loved them. I have ordered the next two on half.com and am waiting patiently for them to arrive. The 6th was not a great deal on half.com so I am getting it at Amazon as soon as I am half way through the 5th.

On to what was she is suggesting. It does make sense for her anyway to kill them off so nobody else can profit from HP. Though she would profit as well as she would get royalties. As for killing him off for the storyline it also makes sense as for what others here mentioned. To kill off V might take Harry's own sacrifice. Would make for an great ending I think.

Rowling hints Harry Potter might die

Author J.K. Rowling notes that killing the main character would keep others from writing sequels.

LONDON, England (AP) -- Author J.K. Rowling said two characters will die in the last installment of her boy wizard series, and she hinted Harry Potter might not survive either.

"I have never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books," Rowling said Monday on TV in London.

Rowling declined to commit herself about Harry, saying she doesn't want to receive hate mail. (Watch what else Rowling said that suggests Harry will die -- 1:24)

"The last book is not finished. But I'm well into it now. I wrote the final chapter in something like 1990, so I've known exactly how the series is going to end," she said.

Some characters might die, but the blockbuster movie franchise lives on. Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that the fifth installment will be released in cinemas in July 2007.

In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," directed by David Yates, the teenage Harry continues to battle the evil Lord Voldemort (again played by Ralph Fiennes) and his followers. Daniel Radcliffe is returning as the title character, and Emma Watson and Rupert Grint reprise their roles as Hermione and Ron. Oscar-nominated actress Imelda Staunton plays the malicious, frumpy Professor Dolores Umbridge, who tortures Harry.

In her Monday interview on the "Richard and Judy" show, Rowling said people are sometimes shocked to hear that she wrote the end of book seven before she had a publisher for the first book in the series.

"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said. "A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil here. They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters. Well, I do."

Rowling is the richest woman in Britain -- wealthier than even the queen -- with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine last year at more than $1 billion.

Whatever she writes next, Rowling is sure of one thing: It won't be as successful as Harry Potter.

"I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."

I have to agree with the majority about Snape. Making him evil is just too easy... she does such a good job of not insulting anybody's intelligence up to that last book, so why start there?

Killing off Harry does make perfect sense, but I'm still not quite sure she'll do it. I still think the big 3 might survive. Or maybe it is only wishful thinking...

Could Voldemort and Draco Malfoy be considered "main characters?" The announcement does not say these characters are "good guys," does it?

Let the conjecture continue!

Oh definitely, it could even be Voldemort and Snape. Good or Evil, there is very little chance that Severus Snape survives this book because either way someone will be very angry with him.

The possibility of Harry dying is nothing new, but I don't believe it for a second. Just a tactic devised to put doubt in our minds. The kiddies would never recover from the death of Harry Potter, and I myself would be a basketcase for a while. The events of the Lightning Struck Tower pushed me over the edge...

I try to take announcements like these with a grain of salt. I remember when book 4 was coming out and the media was all over the fact that "a good friend and schoolmate of Harry's dies!" when all it turned out to be was Cedric. But this time she does say "main characters" so it's going to be interesting seeing who she considers "main" and who's ancillary.
