Walter and Lilly both have Buckeye 3 inch 3 chimes. Roger also had a Buckeye 3 inch 3 chime, but switched to a Lonergan 3 inch 3 chime in 2014. Roy had a Baldwin 5 inch 3 chime, but switched to the Crosby 6 inch 3 chime that was on the Admiral Joe Fowler after the dry dock accident in 1980 and has been using it ever since. The Liberty Belle used Roy’s original Baldwin 5 inch 3 chime until it switched to that annoying Lunkenheimer 3 inch single chime in December of 2018 following her overhaul.

Thank you!!! Yeah, not a fan of the new Liberty Bell one. Hopefully we will see the old Roy whistle back in the future.

How many years will WDW get out of a freshly refurbed loco before it makes another trip to Strasburg?
Sorry, but I’m not familiar with Cedar Point’s railroad.

I can’t remember the last time that Roy was overhauled or Lilly pior to her 2010 overhaul. Walter was last overhauled in 1999 at Tweetsie and left for Strasburg in 2016, so that’s 17 years of service between overhauls. Roger was last overhauled in 2003 at Tweetsie, which is about 15 years of service between overhauls. I’d say 15 years or so, give or take a year or two.
The previous over-hauls at Tweetsie were not as major as these. This is the first time in the parks history they have gotten new boilers. (New boilers were made for the locomotives when they were rebuilt for the park in 1970 / 71.)
I’m not so sure about that.
My information matches with TrainChasers. The locomotives were all intensively overhauled after purchase from the Yucatan and prior to going into service on the WDWRR, this included a "frame-off" ground-up rebuild in Tampa, which included new boilers, new cabs, new bright work (all the pretty brass and paint), and rebuilt tenders. The overhauls/refurbishments on the locomotives since have basically been clean-ups and small repairs (meaning by and large, the locomotives remained intact). To my knowledge, this is the first time the boilers have been rebuilt since then. As a huge fan of the WDWRR (and DLRR too!), if I'm missing another major round of work, please correct me!

I feel like a complete idiot. :hilarious: I know darn well they still have the original Dixons. (except Lilly) I don’t know why the heck I was thinking they didn’t. Well, there’s proof that even a WDWRR expert can have a mental slip.

Here’s a picture of Roger’s taken a year ago.

Clearly says Dixon Boiler Works 1970.

I really don’t know what I was thinking because any other day I would’ve said that they were the originals. Sure do hate to see them go. They’ve lasted for a long time. Too bad Dixon is no longer in business. The only Dixon boiler that remains on WDW property is Roy’s boiler. They replaced the Liberty Belle’s original Dixon boiler last year during her overhaul.

That’s a really cool shot! I wasn’t aware those plates existed. Very cool.

Makes total sense but I didn’t realize Liberty Belle had a Dixon boiler as well. I figured it got replaced, along with virtually everything else, during the refurbishment.

Right now, Roy is the only one left with steam generators.
I take that back @DisAl. It just occurred to me today that when I was visiting Roger at Main Street back in March, the engineer who was there said that Roger is the only locomotive left with steam generators. If that’s true, then Roy’s must’ve already been replaced with batteries. So, I spent about an hour today watching videos of Roy over the past 5 years or so and I paid extra close attention to the back of the tender. No steam was coming out. I guess it’s true then, and all of the dynamos have been replaced with batteries. :(

I didn't catch that either.... I should have since I made this photo of the generator at the back of Roger's tender in early March. For those unfamiliar with this piece of equipment the generator is on the left, the turbine in the middle and the governor on the right.

I swear some time ago maybe early last year (likely January), I saw steam coming from the vents of roy’s generator. Then during a 2017 steam train tour, the guide showed the group the generator, but it’s possible that it could have since been removed. However, back to your point of the batteries replacing the generators, that could possibly explain this weld in the back of Roy’s generator housing. I asked a cast member and she had no idea why it was there, but I guess batteries replacing the generator explains it now.

Need to take up a fund to pay for regular "infiltration tours of espionage" so you can keep those photos coming over the next few years! ;-)

Rumor going around that work on Roger won’t begin until Walter is finished and back in WDW. Not sure if there’s even any truth to this rumor, but if it is true, then what was the point of already sending him?
WDWRR is essentially shut down anyway until Tron construction substantially, if not totally, complete? Any rumors on when Walter would be back? If he's back before the RR reopens, then it may have been to take advantage of a less busy time when there are no RR operations, so it was easier to disassemble the pieces that Walter and Roger no longer are wearing?

I am a bit surprised they did it this way too, considering with the daily shop tours and the confidentiality agreement, there's nowhere left to hide Roger since Walter is taking up the sideshop area. I'd imagine they'd wait til once Walter is on the truck and out of the shop before they start the teardown out of public view. Hopefully this is after I take their shop tour at the end of September!

But my guess would be that while the RR is closed, even if Strasburg can get some preliminary inspections done before the teardown begins, it's worth sending early it to get it back earlier than if they waited to send it.
