RIP The Great Movie Ride

Some of you may already know, but I wanted to mention that I just remembered the Footlight Parade scene in the beginning (bubbles) used to actually work! I googled it because I thought as some point the figures spun (Maybe only for a few years) but the effect was turned off and never fixed. It had fountains and everything that apparently flooded the track at times. The scrim they put in front used to not exist .

I guess failed effects have kind of been a quirk in Disney's DNA For a while. Makes me feel better about the Yeti.

Take a look at my edit for footage of it working properly.

So glad you pointed it out! It was so fast, I must have missed it when I watched the video while "working." :) Side question, I noticed in your video you mentioned the rooftop used to be lined with spotlights. Do you know why they removed this feature? I remember it as a kid. It gave a true Hollywood feel.

For anyone interested, the working scene is shown here at around 14:05. Credit to @marni1971 of course.

Thank you.

I heard the roof spots fell into disrepair in the late 2000s; they were moved by mechanical arms that over time ceased up.

That's unfortunate, but unsurprising. Certainly mechanical effects left to the elements would neep repair/replacement over time, but I guess it was deemed an "unnecessary" detail.

I've never figured this out, but can you explain how the "no more red light" effect works? I must have seen it 200 times but I've never been able to tell how the CM "shoots" out the red light with a cap gun and it's always timed perfectly. I never see them hit a switch or anything that indicates they are coordinating the sound of the gun with the flash and perfect timing of the light going away. I have noticed the little light on the red light that makes the flash, but can't figure out how it's activated perfectly.

Red light is down to timing. There's an audio cue to listen for.

Ages ago Vimeo offered superior quality and better recording length. Some say the quality is still better. It was suggested to me by a very kind friend of mine who helps with my little hobby. And of course today it isn't as restricted as the more popular YouTube so we use both.

My church uses Vimeo for sermons. It's a good video service.

So. Sad. We went February of 2016 and since then we have been watching all the movies that are a part of this ride for fun and now it's gone! This ride is very nostalgic for me as I've been going on it since I was a little girl with my parents. Very sad to see it go. Hollywood Studios (MGM?!?!?!) won't be the same without it! RIP Great Movie Ride. You WILL be missed.

i changed my mind im not satisfied with my last experience with GMR... :grumpy:

...im gonna fly myself down to WDW to go on the last very ride on august 13, exit the ride vehicle near the singin in the rain scene, and handcuff myself to Gene Kelly's lamppost....

this ride ain't goin down without a fight :brb:;)
This reminds me of when people heard of the Mr Toad ride closing there was a story Jim Hill mentioned about some cast members hidden everywhere in each scene of the attraction making sure guests won't do stuff like that.

My sentiments exactly.

If the love in this thread is a sign of how highly regarded this ride is, I think Disney may have their hands full! Haha.

This ride is iconic to me. One of those rides I just always expected to be there. I am sad it is being rushed out the door, so to speak. My gf and I were planning a trip to Disney for December. Her first visit. I am near heart broken this will not be there for her first visit.

Nooo!!! I just went on this in June 2017 for my first and apparently last time. It was really a fun ride and I'm glad I got to experience it before it gets knocked down.

I've been making a point of going on it during our last few trips, knowing (from these boards) this was probably coming soon.

It's a shame they make it happen with so little notice - especially since people with summer blackout dates don't have a chance to make a last minute stopover.

"I think I'll miss you most of all."

...and they eliminated all August blackout dates!!:jawdrop::joyfull:

Rant coming....I was lucky enough to be on it last August. The ride was fairly empty. It had become dated. However this is a prime example of something that could have been updated instead of being replaced ....updated with a new generation of movies for a new generation of people. Why they are choosing to rip it down I don't know ...perhaps they could not get a sponsor to pay for updating it...not sure. Further Disney is putting all the apples into turning this into into a Star Wars themed Park. I hope it works out because one dud movie could sort of ruin everything. George Lucas was sort of good about not shoving Star Wars down your throat the way Disney is doing ....I can't help but wonder if people are going to tire of it. If you're not a big Star Wars fan I'm not sure how much the studios has to offer especially at this point. In fact it seems this park like Epcot is becoming just a more vanilla Park in general ...Magic Kingdom 2 if u will.. I guess Epcot will soon be Magic Kingdom 3 . I guess Star Wars has proven itself overtime. But Guardians of the Galaxy? Or that new land they built an animal kingdom... I can't remember the name of the movie and I don't even know anyone who saw it nor anyone is looking forward to the sequels. I'm not saying they are going to do worse or make less money. I'm just saying my guess is for people in their forties or a little older the parks are going to be far less magical then we grew up... what with new attractions that simply project things onto walls and are far less creative than they used to be. It's still probably the leader in being the greatest place on Earth but in my opinion it just doesn't seem like it's as great as it once was...
