Rich Ross Resigns

I don't get why people are discussing the box office performance of the Avengers in a thread that is supposed to be about Rich Ross resigning/being fired. Holy thread drift!

Why start a whole new thread? :veryconfu

Because it is actually different from what this thread is originally about and it goes in the thread about movies.

Exactly. Anyone who wants to discuss the Avengers success at the box office would never find it in a thread about Rich Ross being fired. Conversely, anyone wanting to discuss the firing of Disney's studio head would be confused to find pages of people sniping over how successful Avengers would be and then over how wrong everyone was in their predictions that, yes, Avengers would be successful.

It's a pretty pointless argument anyway. But it's all the more frustrating because it has highjacked a topic that was actually interesting and completely unrelated to the current ing contest the thread has become.

Not that I disagree with the concern over the thread hijack, but I believe the question may have been geared towards why there was a new thread about the Avengers hitting $700M, when there were multiple ongoing threads about it's success at the box office already.....

Nice. :) I have GOT to go see that movie.....

Since the thread has drifted this far, I may as well contribute. It's a fun movie. Not a lot of substance. But after 4 movies of set-up (more if you count either of the Hulk movies), an extended action scene of a movie is allowed. Especially when it's peppered with Whedonism.

As much fun as it was, I will say the trailer for Dark Knight Rises and Amazing Spider-man made those films seem much more ambitious. Looks like it's going to be a great summer movie crop!

Between Avengers and Brave, Disney actually stands to have a great summer. Too bad John Carter cost Rich Ross his job before he could bask in the studio's success.

I'm looking forward to them all...

And it sounds like there was more in play than simply John Carter which cost Ross his job. But numbers like that for any film would certainly be the icing on the cake of dismissal.....

There definitely was more at play. People were actively rooting for him to fail from day 1. And he accomodated them by failing spectacularily. And apparently by being something of an arrogant jerk the entire time.

The irony is that many suspect Ross sabotaged John Carter for a variety of reasons. While JC isn't the sole reason Ross lost his job, I doubt it would have happened when it happened if JC had merely underperformed. If Ross did sink JC as suspected, he was hoist by his own petard.

I'll be curious to see who Disney goes after next. It would be helpful to have someone with film studio experience (if I remember correctly Ross came from television), and with a bit of a proven track record of success. Time will tell though....

Yep. He was quite successful at the Disney Channel. He's known for Hannah Montana and High School Musical. But he was in over his head at the studio.

There's a lot of rumors. The one I find most interesting is the idea that Kevin Feige at Marvel could get the nod. The success of the Avengers series certainly makes him a contender. I would be curious to see what he could do outside of the Marvel super hero genre.

Kevin Feige would be the ideal choice. That guy has an almost Steve Jobs level understanding of how to sucessfully maintain and grow a brand.

Yeah, I've heard his name; Lasseter (as always) comes up, and even Jerry Bruckheimer's name was tossed out there by some.
