Revenge of the Mummy and Gringotts.

FJ has soooo many empty black areas. Something management are well aware of and won't replicate. FJ has a cool ride system but can be visual-lite. Gringotts is meant to address that.

Something recent I've noticed is that in the Dementor room just after you enter the statue of Salazar Slytherin, they've FINALLY turned off the project-your-face-into-the-fog-to-simulate-a-dementor's-kiss effect that never worked, and turned some lights onto the overhead Dementors that have been there since opening day and just never had their lighting turned on because they were deemed "too scary". I'm sure there's even more than what you can see currently, but it's still super creepy and way better than the effect that never worked correctly.

Sincere question to the folks saying Gringotts will be "totally immersive" - what's that being based off of? Would these people say that FJ - the ride itself, not the queue - is immersive? (I would not, for what it's worth)

From what WhyLightbulb has said about Gringott's, it sounds like the ride will be very heavy on set pieces and show elements (which is what I think you mean when you say immersive). I did a search and found some of his quotes on the project:

"Universal is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Potter 2.0. The main ride will blow away anything Universal or Disney has done stateside in the past 18 years. It's a step above Forbidden Journey and will earn its place among the classic theme park attractions. Carsland looks great and RSR is a wonderful attraction but in terms of the "wow" factor I believe Potter 2.0 will win hands down. There will be some amazing "how did they do that" moments and enough immersive thrills that I just don't think Carsland has."

"There are slow dark ride sequences and "coaster" sequences. Think Mummy and Spiderman with more show"

"Yes count on it! Gringott's will be an amazing ride. The ride system itself will break new ground and the show elements will be a wonder to behold. There will be plenty of envirnmental effects, 3-D sets and next generation projection effects. It will be better than FJ in my opnion. I haven't even gotten into the Express train attraction either."

When did this happen?

The soul-sucking dementor effect worked both times I rode it on my last trip, and I was quite surprised. I wonder why the dementors at the ceiling were deemed too scary?

Not sure how much truth there is to the hearsay but some other things I have been told about the attraction, and please, correct me if you know otherwise, include:

  • The dragon, at one point, was supposed to breath actual fire
  • Aragog was supposed to move
  • Voldemort was supposed to be in the Chamber of Secrets, the dark mark you see forming after the Basilisk skeleton was supposed to be a projection of him
  • There are at least an additional 5 or 6 dementors after entering the Slytherin statue. They are most easily visible just as you begin the flip over to the final screen.
Again, most of these, I have been told were either cut for budget, because they couldn't get the effect to work, or it would have been too scary.

Probably too scary. Honestly, I think this is the scariest ride at Islands of Adventure already. It's an arachnophobe's biggest nightmare. Well, I'm not one, but they are still pretty scary. And the dementors freak me out too.

And I'm glad it's not real fire because I like way the mist makes actual contact with the rider.

The dragon one is bogus I'm 99% sure, Aragog was budget, Voldemort if memory serves me correctly was not to be in Phase 1 at all so to speak, the remaining Dementors are supposedly turned off due to the effect being to scary. Apparently the original effect was for all the dementors to attack the bench (total of 5) while the one is sucking the soul out. Well at least that's what I was told...

The reason why the "guest faces on the mist screen" thing doesn't work sometimes is that if the guest isn't facing the right direction the facial capture software doesn't recognize it as a face. And I heard that the faces are actually captured, not at the soul sucking scene, but from the "on ride photo"

Could universal close FJ, and fix certain dark spots and make it on par with gringotts? I'm guessing it get a refurb before HP2.0 soft opens

Congrats,
On a side note, I do feel the projection system could get an updating, seems very dark to where I remember barely seeing anything in the projection of flying around hogwarts.

I'm sure if they upgraded the ride HD projections would be near the top of the list.

I never even knew that was supposed to be an effect. I've ridden 4 times in two years & never noticed it at all.
