Resort Refillable Mug Bar Codes???!!???

Ok....I've heard a bazillion rumors about the resorts putting bar codes on new refillable mugs so they are only good for length of stay. I'm going next week and really hadn't planned on spending the money again, but if I have to, I guess I will. Anyone hear any TRUTH to this or been to an AS resort in the last week and can give a truthful update?:brick: All I've read has people all frustrated over this, but no one seems to know the actual story on it. Thanks!

Yes, it is official. They are going to be testing this soon at the All-Stars and possibly one of the moderate resorts.

Pardon my expression, but this is boneheaded as hell. Not only are you going to have to go through the time and effort of having to wait at checkout to get your cup scanned so you can get a refill, but I have also heard that they will use the system to terminate the ability to get free refills after your vacation has ended. You read that right, you will have to buy a new mug everytime you stay at a Disney resort now.

Geez, are they trying to off their most loyal customer base or what?

If they haven't started testing yet, then you should be ok when you go next week.

I just had an update on the situation by guest services. They are evidently going ahead and not testing the system as I had originally been told. The new system will start NEXT WEEK at the All-Stars and Carribean Beach, and is expected to implmented resort wide within a couple of months. And yes, the mugs are now only good for the length of your stay.

All current mugs are basically going to be useless in a couple of months.

Am I the only one here who LIKES getting new mugs?

LOL-- sorry-- but back at home, it's nice to have them to remember my vacations by. You take a sip, and, Hello! What's this? Caribbean Beach! Ah, the honeymoon. That was fun.

I need to find a smiley face with a big L on his forehead.

I'm not taking Disney's side on this, but I can understand why they're doing it....the mugs were never intended for lifetime use and many have done just that, using them year after year...

...Given the price of individual sodas on the property, it's STILL a bargain to get the mugs...but I hope they don't limit their use to the resort at which you're staying...that would push me over the edge of my tolerance. Scan the damn mugs if you want, but let me use it property wide!

at Carribean beach, the pop machine is right in the middle of the food court, independent of the serving areas. how are they going to know if people are using old or new cups? did they move the machine to a different spot?!

It isn't healthy!

Disney is not in the business of giving things away for free. Soda pop is not a healthy drink. Drink water or fruit juice (unless you're an infant).

I think everyone should buy a new mug each year. Sentimental value and all. But can't we do away with the scanning thing? I only get the mug as it is quicker to get out of the lines. If I have to wait I will just buy a soda in the pakr b4 I go or in the machines. And if you aren't getting your $10.00 worth of soda you aren't trying!

No you are not. I love getting new mugs. They are a great souvenir and hold a special place in our cabinet.

maybe this is just me, but when i get food at the resort where i am staying, i always pay for it. so if i am already at the counter, i'm not gonna be ed off if i have to get my mug scanned. what is the difference...i'll be in line anyway. sure i will have to purchase a new mug every time i go, but they are great to use on vacations, work, picnics...etc....
so i am all for the scanning, hate me if you will, but that is just my two cents about it

That is the difference between me and you. Whenever I am staying at the Contemporary, it is far too convenient to run down to the arcade, play some games, and then fill up my mug to have something to drink for the rest of the night.

That has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!!!! The point if the refillable mug is to untimately save US time and money...If i have to wait in line to get a refill, I just won't bother with the thing. Actually, I booked Tiffany's Car this time round and was going to try stocking up on stuff at the grocery store since it's included in your drive. I'm sold on that now. I will not wait in line to refill that mug that's half gone b4 I get back to my room anyway. It's what $9.00 now? LOL unbelievable:goodnevil :fork: :hammer: Are they nuts? Are they going to start soda patrol? or have a special soda check point? They are seriously going to off some people with this. Especially their loyal and regualr visitors as someone has alreay said. I can't see this going through!

Yes, I do like to get a new mug each trip. I don't use the same over. It's just the point of having to stand in line for a refill..It's stupid. :drevil:

When we went to Movies from May 25-June 3rd our group of 8 definately got our moneys worth out of the mugs. we hadnt done the mugs on previous visits because we had always driven down and had coolers or fridge in the room for our snacks and things anyway, for the kids we prefer water/juices/milk etc. But we got hooked on the mugs and we will get them again next year IF its not a huge inconvience. example: we filled up on our way to the parks in the am w/o buying food...the kids liked the hot cocoa with their breakfast foods that I had bought for in the room(..hey with five kids on the trip you are always looking to save a buck)then we would wash them out and fill up w/cold soda and take with us to the parks, when done we would store them in the basket under the stroller, rinse out and fill up upon returning to the resort after a day in the parks, so we were filling up alot w/o getting in line to purchase food etc. Besides sending the older boys to get refills when we were poolside...
If the soda prices in Florida are comparable to our area then Disney isnt spending alot on that soda anyway...personally I cant see how it would be cost efficient for Disney to remodel the resorts to crack down on a few "cupaholics".LOL...I didn't see many people using old mugs when we were there. the drink island at movies is in the middle of the food court, when the parks get out it gets to be a mad house as it is...I can only imagine the nightmare they are going to create....if this does go through..we wont bother with the mugs...go back to keeping a supply in the room....Tiffany's did a great job this time and normally we drive down anyway...sorry didnt mean to rant

GEEZE!

I'm one of 4 kids.....the oldest...and the cups are a must have!! especially at a smaller resort like one of the allstars where the FC was pretty much a 1min walk away form ur room and pool!

We always bought new cups....we felt it was the right thing to do....Disney has been good to us...

The convience of the cups were to run in the food court fill them up...and leave within a matter of seconds....yeah u could stop and get food too....but the drinks were so convientent!

So now they want us to wait in line for who-knows-how-many minutes so we can fill up a stupid cup(that looks like it holds more than it does)

Can u imagine what the lines are going to look like at breakfast and Dinner...

I think WDW should focus on there more serious problems than there MUG problems...

punish the peope that cheat "the system" Don't punish the inocent!

We always get new mugs, becuase it only seems fair to do so. Also, we wouldn't want to have them cluttering up the suitcase on the way down. But, I agree that the line issue is a major problem. We like the mugs becasue we can grab a quick soda on the way in or out of the resort as well as when at the pool or gift shop--we are very rarely filling them up to go with a meal as we like to have nicer meals than the food court offers (while still at the parks). I will not wait in a long line for a soda refill, and we are the type of loyal customers Disney does not want to annoy.
