Reservations for Disney Passholder event introducing Duffy the Disney Bear.....

I'm pretty sure I've read that Duffy is bigger with a different backstory. He's not the same as the Disney Bear that has been around forever. Someone in some other thread said the name of the Disney Bear but I can't remember it.

Me!!!!! :sohappy:

Doll collector...check. Teddy Bear collector...just starting and hope to start designing my own artist bears in the coming weeks so...check. Children...I'm a kid at heart which totally counts...check. People who like bears with hidden Mickeys on them...what can be better than something I love paired with something else I love???...big ol' fat check!

And might I add that there are clothes and accessories and the possibility of sewing and creating fun stuff for Duffy which is my favoritest part ever!!!!!

Um...not exactly. I wasn't too hip on the orginal FLE plans yet I'm totally psyched on Duffy. I've wanted one for a while (since I read the little blurb about him in Jack Spence's blog on Allears from a Tokyo trip) but wasn't willing to pay what they were going for on eBay.

I wish I knew how much they're gonna cost! I'd send someone who's going to the even some money!!!!! :D

By that statement I meant young children. Also I said most likely but not everyone

Yeah! After I posted that it sorta dawned on me that I'm not exactly the "norm" in the world and that I just might be the oddball in the bunch.

I think the appeal with the story and stuff is broad. No, teddy bears aren't a common child's plaything in our world of high-tech sophistication. As a collector of dolls (and various critters over the years), naturally my 12 & 14 year old sons have their own collections of variations of what I've collected just because they "get" collecting and it's something they view as a shared thing with Mom. I think Duffy appeals on a collectible level only you don't have to collect a whole bunch of him like the pins or Vinylmations (both of which are pretty popular but not very high-tech). He's for collecting memories such as pictures, script your own adventures (ie. "Here's a pic of Duffy with us on TSMM wearing his glasses. He was a tough to beat little fella. I think he's been on this ride before!"), and maybe buy accessories or clothes. If people are bringing Duffy on their adventures or even just setting him on a shelf at home they'll likely buy him his own mouse ears hat, maybe buy a balloon & tie it to a paw, hook him up with his own pin lanyard, etc. There's oodles of possibilites there. Instead of "trading" events where pin traders or Vinylmation collectors show up to make trades there might be "reunions" or "meetings" where collectors bring their Duffy's to visit each other and show off their albums of adventure pictures, accessories, hand-made ensembles, etc. It could totally snowball into a huge marketing success. We'll have to see how Disney works this.

Can you tell I'm excited?! :sohappy:

Really people!?!

I don't like Star Wars stuff... never liked the movies... don't like the merch... but I don't go around complaining about it and throwing around "vomit" smileys! Just b/c I don't like it doesn't mean the stuff isn't popular or isn't liked by someone else. In fact I'm happy when WDW puts out merch that is popular, unique, and sells well (even if *gasp* I don't like it)!

Disney Bear (Duffy) will have its following and it may just sell well if they promote it the right way at Disney World!

Is that really a problem for some of you!?!

Just because you or others like it doesn't mean mine or other opinions are null and void. That's very sheep-like, and plus this is a forum to express opinions

It's garbage.

And I don't think Duffy will ever be popular in the United States or anywhere else besides the Asian theme parks. But who knows? Most of America knows more about Kim Kardashian than our own president, so you never know with the american public....

But on the same note didn't the people who were excited and love the new WWoHP think the people who had no interest and dissed it without seeing it say much the same thing: why hate something you've not seen yet? Just sayin'...

I have no idea if the Duffy bear thing will catch on in the US. I mean, who woulda thunk Vinylmations would be a success yet they are. Or pins. When you think about it, if you knew nothing about them & had someone describe them to you you might think that's pretty lame-tastic, too.

Either way, I'm not gonna sit around on my "duff" (<--my cheesiness knows no bounds...LOL) waiting to see how it all unfolds to get a Duffy bear. If they don't catch on they won't be around long and I don't wanna miss having one. Heck, I might buy 2. I never dreamed my old Pal Mickey would be worth what he was which was quite a pleasant surprise. If Duffy doesn't have the staying power then he'll be that much more collectible in the future!

That's true... to a certain extent! I think there are more tactful ways at expressing one's opinion, though. Saying it's not "your cup of tea" is one thing... saying "it's garbage" is another!

I also think people on this forum are so eager to jump all over ideas that don't interest them... just b/c it doesn't interest you doesn't make the idea a bad one! It's just something you don't like!

Just exactly who IS the target demo for this?

According to Al Lutz, who broke the news earlier this summer that DisCo would make a huge push out of Duffy at Epcot and DCA this October, the target demographic is office secretaries in Tokyo and rabid AP's in Anaheim.

Not sure what that means for the average Walt Disney World guest, but there it is.

Here's the huge line of Japanese ladies (and some patient boyfriends) waiting to take a photo with Duffy at Tokyo DisneySea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XotxKZxUFUA

Get ready America, it's time to meet Duffy!

Anyone else wish Disney would pay a little more attention to the original Disney bear? :lookaroun

I would buy immediately buy a Humphrey the Bear plush if I ever saw one, and I would wait in line all day to meet him.

To me it looks like they are taking something that is popular in Tokyo Disneyland and bringing it over here to WDW. Makes sense to me.

I am pretty sure there is also a book they sell here with Duffy going around the Magic Kingdom. I could be wrong though.

I think the problem some people are having is that this is a major marketing push, investing money which some view should be spent on expanding the parks. Ultimately, I think this will fizzle. It's not based on any well-known property, and most things that are popular in Asia are met with a "why?" here. The problem is the gross commercialization that is going on (and not just at Disney...a day at Six Flags is a day in commercials Hell). The commodities offered at Disney are supposed to be memories and unique experiences. Instead it's turning into a really well-themed mall with a few rides thrown-in to justify the admission.

Middle aged women who bedazzle their own Christmas sweaters, teenage girls who have to bring their first cousins to the senior prom, boys who are picked last for sports teams, and middle aged me with Chris Hanson outside of their houses.
