"Rapid Fill" Mugs Coming to Walt Disney World Hotels

However, if you eat at least one meal at the resort and come back every afternoon so the kids can nap or hit the pool or whatever, the mug can start to be a mighty fine purchase.

This is how we are do Disney with a currently 2 and 3 year old. If regular cups are $2.50 I just need to fill my mug twice a day to save money on a 7 night stay. Yes water is better but caffeine is nice. No car to go buy cheaper drinks offsite.

I don't mind the tech to keep it in check either. If I'm paying so should those that would steal.

Anyone know if this is going in at Bay Lake pool quick service or do you need to go to Contemporary?

I getcha. It should be noted that I wasn't arguing with you or saying that your decision was wrong. I was merely wondering what it was about the change the forced your decision.

I also agree with you. The increases in price for the mug have certainly made it more difficult to buy one. This is especially true as we tend not to use the things very often. I guess if our kids were soda drinkers and we hung out at the resort pools more often, it would be a better deal.

It should be noted that someone earlier in the thread stated that if you change resorts, then you would only have to pay once, bringing your overall cost back to $17.99 each.
No worries. I'm really not upset about the change. It's an easy decision now to not buy in.

During my entire summer stay, each length of stay was specifically referred to as the time in each resort. They may grant additional time to the mugs on request, but it will not be automatic. Standing in line to reactivate an $18 mug each time I change resorts doesn't sound very magical either.

I for one have no plans to buy a mug. Its cheaper to just order some and have it shipped to your room. Thats what I do with water so I may do so with Soda or Iced Tea. Then if Disney starts charging to have things delivered to your resort then I will start renting a car and spend more time off property. Its Disney trying to save pennies while dollar bills are flying over their heads.

I don't see the big deal about this. Either the cups are a good value for your family because you use them enough, or they are not. The only way it is going to affect people are the ones who steal the soda. And for the ones standing on "principle", your principle is that Disney is giving you exactly what you paid for and that's a problem for you? There are way too many dishonest people in this world, shame on them.

I have never had a problem with this policy, and have never reused mugs or used them in a manner that this system would prevent. But this whole thing just feels too "big brother" to me. Like we assume our guests will cheat the system so we will police them to the ounce of soda. And maybe that is the case and a lot of people are cheating the system but policing soda refills so closely doesn't exactly leave a great taste in your mouth.

Unfortunately they don't have to assume, over the July/August vacation I just returned from I saw daily abuses of the fountains where guests would bring Dixie cups and fill them, drink, repeat. This was entire families doing this over long periods of time and at the Boardwalk resort. As with anything that gets abused, either the priviledge goes away or the company tightens up a bit to balance the product in their favor. Last NYE there were families at AS-S filling gallon jugs of Coca-Cola to take back to their rooms, I was shocked by the audacity.

I am not advocating what Disney is doing in the least, simply stating that I personally believed they would eliminate them soon if something was not done because of the abuse.

we just stayed onsite for 14 days. our family of five did not buy the mugs or dining plan this trip. There was no way, shape or form we could have come out saving money on the mugs...would have been $75. But we just don't drink enough beverages at the resort food courts or poolside. We usually drive so its easy for us to spend $30 and stock up on drinks.
We have purchased mugs in the past...mostly when they were resort specific or thrown in w/a dining plan we got free.

We averaged four to five refills of Soda/Tea/Coffee per day on our last visit of 10 days with a group of three, costing us $1.20 per fill. While a bit more expensive than purchasing 12-packs of soda, we also had a variety, would transfer our drinks at the parks to the mugs so they stayed cold longer, and had them when we returned to the resort.

My point, each guests habits are different, we could refill at three differnet locations in the resort which made it much more convienient, especially when we spent many evenings simply walking around and enjoying the entertainment on the Boardwalk or while at the pool.

Call it a tipping point... $15 for a resort mug was never a good deal. When they were resort specific I could justify the expense by calling it a souvenir. They took that away when they went generic with the mugs. Then last trip we were there for 2 weeks. We stayed at 3 different resorts during our 2 week trip (8 nights, 1 night, and 5 nights), so under the new rules, we would have had to buy the same mug 3 times, for $17.99, $8.99, and $17.99 or a total of $44.97 for each mug. Multiply that by 5 people in our family, and it would be $224.85 for coffee and soda refills. Sound Magical?

Under the new rules, your mugs travel with you and are good for your length of stay at WDW.

Disney could stop the abuse, simply get rid of self serve.........Disney does not want to pay for a CM to hand out drinks simple as that.

Totally agree that Disney does not want to pay to place the fountains behind the counter. By doing it, the lines would get long and would deter guests from ordering food and other items from the locations.

You don't have to reactivate it at each resort. The new rules let you use the mug at any/all resorta for up to 14 days. You turn it on once for 14 days.

I can only imagine what this thread would look like if, instead of RFID cups, the announcement was 'No more self-serv soda'.

It occurs to me that self serve drinks may help Disney avoid a lawsuit in case someone becomes dehydrated and collapses because they had to wait on a long line to be served a drink or refill by a CM.

I'm saying that self service with free refills is good for your health to prevent dehydration, unless you believe carbonated drinks are worse for your thirst.

The free water fountains are good for hydration, there is nothing good for your health or hydration in soda.

$2.75 for a bottle of water...
That's downright cheap. Every theater on Broadway charges $5 for water. I believe the local AMC and Regal theaters also charge $4-5 for bottled water.

Though I disagree with you...Universal's counter service is a little cheaper, though not by much. Although, both Disney and Universal are bargains compared to what Six Flags charges for food. Talk about outrageous!

Still, Disney is not going to stop selling soda and people aren't going to stop drinking it.

Back in the day when I worked at Six Flags, the park's president was refusing to install water misters in the park (which was happening at other parks) because he believed it would decrease the sales of beverages. It doesn't matter that soft drinks don't hydrate...most people think they do, psychologically if not intellectually.
